Russian Gun Store - How to handle a grenade

Your Dog thinking You're the "Alpha" is NOT a Real Thing

TheFreak says...

Hmmm....I'm not resistant to this new information but when I listen to this presenter it sounds to me like she's personally offended by the original Alpha dog theory. The disgust in her voice throughout is unmistakable and I assume she's conflating canine behavior theory with human social cliches or that she feels that any form of negative reinforcement is abuse.

This leads me to believe that I'm getting a biased interpretation of nuanced data.

If I want to know what's going on here I'm going to have to commit to the necessary investigation because this presenter is unreliable on this topic.

Unfortunately, my interest in this topic barely extends to the length of a 6 minute youtube video.

Your Dog thinking You're the "Alpha" is NOT a Real Thing

newtboy says...

So, sounds to me like the alpha male theory is correct, just not the reasons why people think one becomes alpha and another doesn't.
Aggression and force are not what makes an alpha, strength, intelligence, and a calming temperament seem to be more representative of alpha traits.
Also, being the guy who feeds them makes a huge difference in the dynamic.
On top of that, when they're pups, I hold their nose/snout in my mouth gently but firmly. That's one way canines assert dominance without aggression or fear. I don't recall where I learned that, but seems to work.

I've never bullied my dogs into submission, I've only used positive reinforcement to train them, but when I command them I'm firm and there's never been any question about who is the alpha. They might run through a door before me, but they listen and obey when commanded, and have never once been aggressive towards me or challenged my authority, I'm on my fourth dog.
There's a definite difference in how they react to my wife, who would be beta in this scenario. They listen to her, but not as well and they take their time when she calls them.

Racist Ad promoting Volkswagen's new Golf 8

newtboy says...

Really? I thought the outrage was about denying the black man Golf ownership and sending him to a "little colony" (the name of the store he's flicked into)....
....but no, it's about the tag line fading in and for one instant as the tag line fades in the letters "erneg" are on screen, which people have rearranged to spell "neger"...a bit of a stretch. Also the hand pre-flick is said to be the white power sign, but not every thumb touching an index finger is a sign of racial hatred.

If you look for and expect racism in everything, you'll find it in everything....often including where it isn't. That's a self reinforcing circle that eventually paints the entire world as racist.

Google Maps Flying Rabbit

newtboy says...

Ok, I'm noticing it's pointed the opposite direction when airborne, so I must assume it was hit pretty hard by the Google car.
It's rear left leg's angle reinforces my theory.
Smart, Google car. Why waste a hand grenade if you don't need to?

Candace Owens & Russell Brand - A rational conversation

Khufu says...

Wow, this reinforces my opinion about anyone that states "I'm really smart." This is some incredible ignorance, especially the part where she thinks it was 100% her hard work that made her successful and anyone that doesn't achieve the same level of success didn't work hard enough.

Earth at 2° hotter will be horrific. Now here’s 4° +

newtboy says...

Sorry, Bob, your dude is either a moron or liar. (The woman screaming at him from off camera isn't much better.)
I had my proof when he lied "best case scenario, 10 ft sea level rise in 40-50 years, worst scenario is 100ft."

That is absolutely not even close to the prediction. Most accepted predictions are in the 2-3 ft sea level rise range by 2100, not 10-100 ft by 2060. Since he is so incredibly wrong about the basics, I have no doubt he's just as wrong or worse in his understanding of the science and not worth my time.....his lack of understanding a temperature change that takes thousands or tens of thousands of years is less destructive than one of equal magnitude taking decades reinforces that assumption.

His proof it's not real....he hasn't noticed it on the prospectus for condominiums or bank loans in Miami...not that he's read many but he's certain not a single fucking one mentions sea level rise....but that's absolutely bullshit, they do. Prices in low lying areas have steadily dropped since 2000 specifically because of increasing chances of flooding, while higher, previously low income areas are becoming gentrified. Hurricane and flood insurance rates have also skyrocketed because insurance companies do factor in climate change, which would be noted in a condo sales prospectus or bank loan. He's quite simply lying.

Don't think it went unnoticed that you didn't address the question a whit.

So let's have those names, your bloodline will not be saved from the disaster you help cause.

Ladder beats wall

newtboy says...

Perhaps you are ignorant of the fact that the vast majority cross where walls already exist. To answer your question, nearly all of them would still try. Do you really think a fence is deterrence when the alternative is go home and see your family raped to death before you're decapitated? Would you just say "oops, sorry, didn't mean to trigger you....let me just take my daughter back to the narcos for a life of sex slavery and just die then, so sorry."?

A better immigration policy that makes it easier to get a work visa or asylum at ports of entry instead of making illegal entry easier, simpler, cheaper, and faster would discourage people from taking the easier, but illegal path. We are moving the other direction, which is why illegal immigration is on the rise under Trump after falling steadily for decades.

This doesn't cost America except for fighting it, they make us money with cheap labor, taxation without representation or access to government assistance, and by lowering the per capita crime rates by being far less criminal on average than Americans. You want to deport a group that's well above average in criminality, that would be Republican politicians and or Trump associates...no one will miss a single one.

A $50 billion wall (Trump's never built anything that wasn't at least 100% over budget) that can be evaded with a ladder, shovel, car, truck, saw, torch, boat, plane, and in many many places, absolutely nothing (it's no longer a single solid wall from coast to gulf, it's now a fence in a few more places for your $50 billion.) is not just vastly more expensive, it's also uselessly wasting that money for almost zero return, the few places it might help will just see the migrant paths move a few miles over.

If we had a 40+ ft high, 20 ft deep, 4+ft thick reinforced concrete wall coast to coast that was somehow ladder proof, it still wouldn't stop most illegal immigration or drug trafficking, because the vast majority of both come through ports of entry. The wall is a useless solution to a non existent problem that's been solving itself for decades....side note: what do you think it was like in the good old days when America was "great"? Contrary to Chump's claims, operation wetback (that he wants to reimplement) was a failure....

Out of the 400,000 apprehensions last year along the southern boarder how many would have tried if there were a wall?

How many slipped passed and not accounted for?

from U.S. Customs and Border Protection link

https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/stats/sw-border-migration/fy-2018

400,000 average apprehensions /year for last 6 years

With catch and release how much $ does this cost America?
A Wall would greatly discourage one from attempting.
Also a wall would be cheaper.

Emotional Wedding Haka

Sagemind says...

I'm going be honest here.
I'm getting tired of seeing Haka all over social media.
But maybe not in the way you think.

It's a deeply emotional and personal dedication of feelings and respect. It's amazing and a great show of power which presents and reinforces the dedication a group has to another.

It's deeply spiritual and steeped in tradition.

But the way it's plastered all over Social Media, it's become a spectacle. It's become something to gawk at, and it trivializes what's really going on. It's so deeply personal. This exchange is more of an experience in it's presentation.

Of course this is just my opinion. My opinion is irrelevant in this matter, and I would never try to force my opinion on others. I'm not advocating some kind of Social Justice enforcement or cultural appropreation, or what ever the internet trend is.

FOR ME, I just feel the deep importance is stripped away as we look in. It would be fine if I saw one or two, and I experienced the power to understand it. But it seems like every time I turn on my computer, someone else has posted another one. (This one isn't new to me, I've seen it in at lease 20 other places on the web on other SM platforms. It's becoming a meme which does it some discredit.

Thanks for letting me voice my thoughts.

Texas mom spanks teen son after he took off in her BMW

Mordhaus says...

The belt isn't the answer, it is a tool. The same way physical punishments like Push-Ups are for Military discipline. The same way solitary confinement or hard labor is used as a tool to provide discipline in prison.

I do not subscribe to the notion that non-punitive punishment is effective. Offering Johnny a new game if he doesn't torment his sister is teaching him that being bad is rewarded.

In the case of this incident, the belt was used as a tool to indicate that he had broken the rules and it was reinforced later by grounding.

Conversely, she could have taken the other available option and simply called the police to report her car stolen, which it was. His being her son does not excuse him from a crime of taking a vehicle that does not belong to you. That method would not be considered child abuse according to the guidelines you propose, however it would lead to juvenile charges, exposure to the legal system, and a simmering hatred of his mother that I suggest a simple embarrassing spanking/grounding would not.

Can you take it too far with physical punishment? Absolutely, and then it is most definitely abuse. Beating a child with an improvised switch until the child bleeds is abuse. Spanking them with a belt a few times in public, which adds a humiliation factor to the punishment, is not.

Bernstein Promises Bloodshed If Dems Try To Impeach Trump

newtboy says...

Lol. Quote CNN, it's "repeating what lying disgraced fake news CNN says". Don't quote CNN, it's "I don't hear that on CNN".
Anything to be dismissive, eh Bob?
Sorry, I think for myself. I understand that's a foreign concept to you....but you really should try it sometime.

So, you watch a right wing crybaby claim the right is too infantile and unpatriotic to accept a likely legal future, and claim they (you) are going to throw an adult tantrum if you don't get your way, and your answer is "the crybabies are from the left". *facepalm.
Funny, I don't recall those leftist crybabies threatening revolt and armed insurrection when Clinton was investigated unfairly by unambiguously anti Clinton investigators for years on end, then impeached over being a good lawyer with a good vocabulary ("is" doesn't mean "was").

24/7/375 anti Trump reporting, because he's a disaster 24/7/365. It's not propaganda if it's true.

Trump polls dropped to 60% disapproval. Duh.

I agree there...only the fake stories help worried conservatives in their resolve, because only fake stories support Trump. Honest reporting turns adults against Trump.

All the antifa protest, huh? Funny, I haven't heard about them except as a distraction or subject change mentioned by you in some time.
#walk away is not real, Bob, except the part describing conservatives #walkingaway from Trump. Hanging your hat on liberals leaving Democrats and joining Republicans because Democrats are too nasty, are overtly racist, and are hyper supportive of Russia simply isn't going to go well for you.

Bob, you represent what's wrong in America....1/4 of us have lost touch with reality and decided that any fact they don't like can just be dismissed as a lie, no matter how factual it is, and an industry has grown to sell you stories that reinforce that mindset. (No one said Murdoch isn't smart). You are firmly in that willingly self blinded group, still supporting a undeniably disloyal, honorless, petulant fraud and consummate liar and fooling yourself that you're in a majority. 36% (his approval rating) isn't a majority, 60% (his disapproval rating) is.....but unflattering numbers are fake news, right?

bobknight33 said:

Funny I don't see this kind of language your using on any CNN or late night clips .

The Crybaby's are from the left. Day after day night after night doom and gloom and wipers of hope that they finally got dome dirt on Trump. Day after day they end up with egg on their face.

CNN and Lanny Davis -- recent prime example CNN going with the lie -- even after Lanny Davis corrected them-- FAKE CNN

24/7/365 anti trump propaganda and still Trump polls # stay steady.

All the media fake stories about Trump helping Conservative get stronger in their resolve.

All the Antifa protest and hard left stories just are just turning liberals away from the democrat party.

Democrat represent everything wrong with America.

Hey Incels, women don’t owe you anything

ChaosEngine says...

100% agree with the first part.

"the internet is killing people's ability to be social"
Not so sure about that. Pre-internet incels definitely existed, but I don't think they would have "worked it out" any more than they would today. If anything, I think the internet can bring marginalised people together, for good or ill.

As you say, the problem is one of magnification or more specifically reinforcement.... the "echo chamber" effect.

OTOH, connecting with a marginalised group can be a positive. If there's no-one around you who has the same interests/desires/problems, the world can feel quite lonely. As usual, context matters.

Khufu said:

no one is owed anything, these "nice guys" as you call them are not that nice if they lose patience with their flawed strategy, then attack women.

how nice a person is doesn't matter, most women want someone who excites them/makes them laugh/is an action man/follows through on promises.

these incel people are not an internet group by coincidence... the internet is killing people's ability to be social, especially those people who would have already had trouble, but could have worked it out pre-internet, now people have internet forums as a crutch to help them never have to speak to real people ever and everything gets magnified.

New Rule: I Feel Petty

ChaosEngine says...

Oh FFS, here we go again with Maher deliberately missing the point.

Honestly, I used to think there were a few topics he should steer clear of (his anti-vax conspiracy nonsense to start with), but now I'm starting to think there are only a few topics he should comment on.

Even his schtick on religion is pretty fucking tired compared to much better commentators.

So fine, let's address the elephant in the room. The problem with this movie is that it holds up AMY FUCKING SCHUMER and goes "hah! look at her... the pig thinks she's good looking... how hilarious", when Amy Schumer is gorgeous.

So yeah, I'll go full SJW (never go full SJW!!) and say that this just reinforces the impossible beauty standard foisted on women that says if you're not Scarlett Johansson, you're not good looking.

If you want to hear a grown up who actually knows about film talk about the movie, watch Mark Kermode.

Black Woman should walk a mile in a white woman’s shoes

newtboy says...

His position is 'what if a miracle happened and it reinforced my baseless position....what then?' ....what?
I prefer 'What if right wing nuts could recognize reality and switched political positions to be liberals, and we found out that they are still totally nuts?' as an analogy.

Pretty sure that most black women, given an opportunity to "live in a white woman's shoes" would stay in them....this is so common it's known as "passing"....the reverse is so rare it's known as Dolezaring.

Even they (Fox) aren't this dumb.

Chris Hedges On F On Fascism In The Age Of Trump (Nov. 2017)

newtboy says...

Bob, I wholeheartedly disagree with your assessments, but it begs the question....if you thought the nation was in such dire straits, why did you so blindly support the bankrupting idiot baby that's made it exponentially worse while creating and reinforcing so many divisions, making it nearly impossible for Americans to work together while also obliterating our international leadership positions?

You now admit he's not qualified to lead (never was), but you put him in the most important position of responsibility and leadership possible....now you want to blame his utter failings on previous administrations, not his constant lies and total ineptitude that you zealously defended and excused!? No sir, blame yourself.

As to the "agenda", those Hollywood values (you know, honesty, inclusion, diversity, freedom to be who you are, personal liberties, anti corporate personhood,...) are shared by a VAST majority of Americans....they are American values.
Why am I not surprised you don't get that?

As to their debasement, that starts with lies...lies like the ones you defend and applaud, like Trump lying about the tax plan because, as you privately said, if he told the truth he couldn't have passed a tax plan that benefits the wealthy like himself immensely and hurts the people who can least afford it while bankrupting the treasury as a set up to kill programs for the poor. You defended that lie privately....are you too ashamed to do so publicly?

bobknight33 said:

...values clearly promoted in Hollywood, and media. Who is really pushing this agenda?

This current state of being is a long time in coming not a POTUS Trump fault.. One can argue Trump is not qualified but this was laid at his feet when he took office.
