Kurzgesagt - Is Organic Food Really Better or is It a Scam?

newtboy says...

Repeatedly, companies large and small have been caught passing conventionally grown vegetables as organic. When they get caught, they pay a fine that's far less than the profit they make, and then they move on with little notice.
Recently I read about a huge grain supplier (i think for general mills) that had been selling their conventional grain as organic for decades, so all the higher priced organic products made from it weren't actually organic, but there's no refund coming for customers.

This means store bought organic food is a Crap shoot at best.

If you want fresh, clean, eco friendly vegetables, grow your own. It's really the only way to be sure what you're getting.

Costco lets woman return dead Christmas tree in January

newtboy says...

This is why Costco is no longer such a discount.
No questions asked returns with no time limits....this policy was too easy to abuse.
They have changed that policy for electronics. I'm glad, my brother used to return 3-5 year old computers and electronics for full refunds...it always pissed me off. Now, thanks to people like him (and her), if my new tv dies after 7 months, I'm sol.

Being on a Cruise Ship During Bomb Cyclone

Mordhaus says...

The first cruise I went on, back in 2002, they chased a hurricane around the Gulf rather than refund money. Some of it looked similar to this, but I think we had worse seas. Anyway, my wife and I both came down with the flu or a really bad cold around the same time, so it was miserable. They wouldn't let you out on the upper decks and recommended people stay in their rooms or inside.

Also, all the islands we were visiting had been at least brushed by some of the winds/seas of the storm, so the beaches were muddy and/or damage was all around. We never went on Royal Caribbean again.

Edit: Actually our seas were about similar to the ones at 3:24, so I guess it was comparable.

The Real Reason Taxes Suck

ChaosEngine says...

In the civilised world, "doing taxes" is one of those weird things you are aware of because of American TV.

In my entire working life, my interaction with tax amounts to looking at my payslip whenever my salary changes and ... that's it.

My tax comes off my pay automatically, I pay a flat Goods and Services Tax of 15% on everything I buy, and there are various other duties, levies, etc., all of which are pre-calculated and included in the listed price.

There are a few "tax refund" companies around that will try and recoup a tax gain, but most of the time it amounts to so little money it's not worth it.

New Rule: Fee F**king

Payback says...

Just on a side note, fairly recently credit card companies started charging for refunds. So, if you want to screw around a company, buy something on credit, then take it back a day or so later. They'll get charged the percentage for selling it to you, then they'll be charged the same amount again for returning it. Credit card companies couldn't give a shit whether you pay off your card or not. You're small potatoes. They get their money off the vendors.

Honest Ads - Why Credit Cards Are A Scam

Payback says...

The credit card companies get 2-4% of every single purchase made with every single card. They really couldn't give a shit if some pay on time, and others keep a balance. The consumer end of the equation is peanuts. That's why, if you ask, they'll lock your card for a few months and not charge interest while you pay it down.

Recently, they've changed it so they charge 2-4% for refunds as well. So if you buy something for $100, Visa holds onto $3. If you come back and get your money back, Visa holds onto ANOTHER $3. So your favourite store just got reamed for $6, with no actual purchase being final.

Burger Flippers Beware! Robots Are Here To Take Your Jobs!

poolcleaner says...

Hi, I'm the hamburger flipper bot's security guard. Please slide your credit card, food will be dispensed at the end of the line. There are no refunds, I'm just a security guard. Please, sir, do not strike the machines or I will be forced to call my supervisor who will call the police and they WILL send taze drones.

Amazon Go: stores with no lines or checkouts, shop and leave

RFlagg says...

It's not clear yet how many items are using RFID. They say they are using "computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning" akin to what is used in self-driving cars.

So there are some concerns if you pickup an item then put it back in the wrong place, will it detect it was still left in the store, or will it charge you? Putting it back in the right spot, refunds you, but it's not obvious otherwise.

We really need to know more from the Amazon employees that are using it.

It sounds a lot like Minority Report style stuff going on, and I think it is more a tech demo than a full concept they'll carry out in mass. The information on the path the customer takes, what they get and all that is probably worth a ton, and helps offset other costs with the system... though most of those costs are offset by having fewer employees... We are quickly reaching what CGP Grey noted in his video *relate=http://videosift.com/video/Humans-Need-Not-Apply where we need less and less people to do the lower end jobs... and those shelves look like they can be filled from the back, which is easier on robots.

The packaging for every item must have an embedded RFID. An idea from about a decade back. One of the worries back then was that people could scan your garbage and learn a lot about you. People probably don't care about that nowadays.

Donald Trump: Magician-In-Chief

Aftermath November 2016

newtboy says...

I think you misunderstand what many meant with their 'fuck you' tantrum vote. It wasn't (just) 'fuck you' to Clinton, the Dems, or centrist republicans, it was a 'fuck you' to the entire system that offers them only disastrous options, if they get input at all. Many made the adult decision to elect someone they hope will destroy the system, but they didn't think far enough ahead to see the pitfalls and traps inherent in starting anew. For many, it wasn't that Trump was a better choice, they elected him because he was the worst possible choice. You can call that a 5year old's tantrum, but you discount the real feeling so many have that the government only works against their interests and they would be better off with anarchy. (I wholeheartedly disagree with that theory, but I can totally comprehend it and understand why many think that).

Btw, we're near twins with the vacation/dog issues. I had already paid for non refundable tickets, rental car, excursions, and lodging in Iceland when my pup broke it's back, or we would have cancelled too. It's been tight, but we stayed out of major debt, and we're poor. Don't give up too easily, where there's a will, there's a way.

There's two ways to look at this election. One is a dispassionate exploration of why did it happen. Another way is a moral argument on who people should have voted for. What you wrote is a great description of why Trump was elected.

Her reaction to the election is a great moral reaction to people who voted for Trump.

I'm sorry, but she's right.

A "fuck you" "no confidence" vote for Trump is a temper tantrum vote, and I say this as someone who isn't really a big Hillary Clinton fan. Voters shouldn't act like five year olds. How about be adults and do what you've had to do frequently in your adult lives, take the punch in the gut, and fucking do the right thing.

I REALLY REALLY want to go to Europe next year. I saved up the money, I had everything planned out, and I was ready to go. And then my dog got sick and had a thousand dollar surprise vet bill, and then my heat pump died.

I could act like a five year old and go anyway even though I don't have the money as a fuck you to god, the universe, or whatever I think gives a damn, or I could be a grown up and do the right thing - postpone the trip and go later.

I acted like a adult, and did the right thing. Europe can wait.

I wouldn't say this to an Obama, Romney, McCain, George W. Bush, Kerry, or Gore voter, and I could keep going back in history. This wasn't an election where you're picking between equally deadly gruesome poisons. One was a typical politicians, who you may rightfully hate, and the other was a sexist racist completely inexperienced baffoon who bragged about sexual assualt, bragged about how big his dick was in a presidential primary debate, a complete serial liar the likes we haven't seen in politics in the modern era, and I could go on and on and on.

Be a fucking grown up and vote for the only responsible adult in this election, who is admittedly completely unlikeable. It's really not hard, but never put anything past the American voter.

No Man's Sky Expectations Vs. Reality

dannym3141 says...

People love sandbox survival and they love space exploration and they fell in love with the idea of what this game could be. The magazines talked about it like evangelical christians talk about the rapture - this is the end of gaming as we know it and it's going to change everything! And the internet fandom descended with prepubescent fury on anyone that dared suggest the emperor was, in fact, nekkid.

This long video about NMS covers it extremely well, but i'll cut a long story short. There was something veeery slightly disingenuous about the moratoriums placed on reviews, lack of pre-release review versions, and significant backtracking and retconning of promises made by lead designer(? - but definite spokesperson) Sean Murray. The clean cut, well spoken, awkwardly charming Sean Murray. Who I think understood as the release date got closer that a lot of people were not going to be happy with him, because in his interviews he started to look more and more like De Niro playing Russian roulette in The Deer Hunter.

Extra things that immediately pissed me off before i refunded it:
- Menu stuff can appear offscreen if you open it by the edges in 2016
- Can't alt tab in full screen
- Run in borderless window to solve it, performance hit
- i7 6700k, Maximus viii Hero mobo and a GTX 1080 but yes, performance hit and general poor performance anyway
- Can't bind actions to thumb buttons in 2016
- Mouse sensitivity goes from 0 to 100. Changing my sensitivity from 100 to 0 didn't even half the turning speed in game, I had to alt tab to manually change the DPI in razer synapse, which is where i discovered i couldn't alt-tab.

All this for £40? Overwatch cost £30.

They made a lot of money off this, but I'm afraid for me they did it through unfair means. If you check out the quotes from Murray and what the game actually is, there's a huge disparity and the backtracking as release date approached was the final evidence.

Lokai Bracelets are a Scam

Payback says...

Well, send them back for a FULL refund**

**less the $45 shipping+handling.

It's kind of hilarious. The "Shipping and handling" on these sort of things completely pays for all out-of-pocket costs plus a tidy profit. Even if everyone sent them back, the scammers would still make money.

Likewise.

I did find an article in the Sunshine Coast Daily which explained some of his problems - http://www.sunshinecoastdaily.com.au/news/music-video-offers-funny-new-take-campaign-lemon-l/2837465/

It's the dealer who is responsible for either rectifying the faults or giving him a refund and not FCA (although they are subject to a separate ACCC order and are dragging their feet to the maximum extent allowed by the law).

Drunk UConn Kid Goes Nuts After Being Denied Service

"I don't understand"
Yes, that's pretty apparent.
They should have citizen arrested him the second he touched the manager, on the ground face first. At least eventually they went there.
What a silly little douchebag. Mommy and daddy are going to be pretty upset with him, especially after he gets expelled with no refund.
Karma's a bitch, huh?

Santa Ana Cops Behaving Badly

newtboy says...

It's even better (worse), because after accepting over $1million in these 'permit lottery tickets', they've suspended the lottery, so NO ONE is legal even though hundreds of businesses paid their 'fee' to get a chance to be legal, and they seem to be using the applications as 'probable cause' for warrants for any business that submitted an application for the permit 'lottery'. It's disgusting that the judge in the case saw how corrupt the plan is, but actually made things worse by halting the program but not demanding the 'fees' be refunded or the business permits be re-issued to those that had permits before this plan went into effect. That makes this program a pure armed robbery by the local government, one that I'm sure will be overturned, but many will lose their business, savings, and even their freedom in the mean time.
I think the feds are taking a hands off approach to medical marijuana. They have stopped going after it (for now) but are also not helping defend them. It's a pretty screwed up situation I hope will be resolved in the next election where I expect at least California will legalize recreational marijuana (yet we probably won't be releasing the thousands in prison for minor marijuana crimes, too much money to be made by keeping them incarcerated).

radx said:

Cheers for the info, mate, but... cash up front, non-refundable? Sweet mother of fuck, that's a shakedown. Nothing shady about it, that's pure-D corruption.

If this creative business model of theirs is then enforced by the police in such a manner as we witnessed in this clip, it might probably be a good idea to get the feds involved in this.
