Half-Life: Preliminary Findings (Making Of)

PORTAL Break Down: Pure and Simple Origins!

Drachen_Jager says...

I actually knew a few of the people involved. DigiPen (where the students who designed Portal went) was just up the road (and my second choice for a CGI school) from where I got my education in computer animation. I used to hang out with Ben Morris who built level design tools for Doom and Quake back in the day and went on to build the level design tool for Valve that they used on Halflife and Portal.

I also worked on Navy Seals, the project Gooseman did before Counter Strike.

Sometimes I wish I could go back in time and keep collaborating with some of those folks instead of finding a different path (animating for TV shows).

I missed that when it came out, and was mostly onboard with Wolfenstien, Doom and Quake. I played the hell out of the Skynet games a couple years ago to recap, and they were glorious, as well as gloriously overlooked. Amazing tech for their day.

Man, this reminds me of the Terminator SkyNET game.

It had LAN play, you could drive jeeps, fly HKs. It was wild for 1996.

The ultimate video game turned movie...STRAFE!

That's a pretty awesome trailer that reminds me of a terrible movie that was terrible even when it was released, that I should watch again, called Brainscan - featuring Eddie Furlong. If you look at it's RT page it has a 17% critic score but 61% liked it - so it's definitely one of those weird "cult" flicks. Eh, whatever - reviews suck these days just like mainstream news you can't delineate shit from em, just like this game - it's been getting pretty bad scores and pretty good scores. Me, if I wanted to play this game - I'd just go play Quake. That game is still badass to this day.

Earthquake Liquefaction Example

For those who are wondering of the actual effects that this causes in a earthquake. Water and Sand get forced up. After the last big quake in christchurch the water was upto my knees in about 2minutes. Thick sand/water mix covered everything. Pipes below the ground were often forced up and out, and houses sunk into the ground. Sinkholes, uneven ground, damages roads and footpaths. Its a pretty nasty effect.... and thats without the quakes force alone.

The site you linked to looks to be the best authority for data on the quake. They don't mention anywhere which scale they use. I doubt they would still be using the Richter scale, but it is a possibility. The quake very well could be 7.5Mw and the USGS is using less accurate data/modals to arrive at 7.8Mw.

...

After further investigating I don't think GeoNet has a clue which scale they use. On their history page they alternate using Mw,Ml,Ms.

using Ms value as M
http://info.geonet.org.nz/display/quake/M+7.1%2C+Arthur%27s+Pass%2C+9+March+1929

using Mw value as M
http://info.geonet.org.nz/display/quake/M+7.1%2C+Inangahua%2C+24+May+1968

using Ml value as M

Would be nice if they would state and be consistent on which scale they use for magnitude. The Eiffel tower is both 276 and 302 tall.

Yeah so, a couple of things.
1. It was a 7.5

and
2. as someone who lived through it, and had to be evacuated because of a tsunami warning at 2am, trust me.... it really wasn't that funny.

Um.....comedy? Not to me....or those cows I would bet. I hope someone goes out with a bobcat and makes a ramp for them or airlifts them out before they fall off that cliff. Poor guys.
Not exactly pets either, but there's no livestock tag.

Zero Punct- Quake (1)

poolcleaner says...

Totally. This is what we all played in school and everyone i knew had this in their car to listen to. So everywhere you drove you were in Quake.

Descent 2 also had a pretty killer soundtrack with Type O Negative and Skinny Puppy. Had that in the cd case right next to Quake.

You're absolutely correct. I loved that you could put the game disc into a standard cd player and just listen to the NIN soundtrack. Being a fan of the band and FPS games, Quake was absolutely the shit. So many hours put into it, at least up until Unreal came out.
