Food Speculation Explained

RedSky says...

On topic, there needs to be a better ability to measure and monitor OTC derivative contracts, but I think generally people who sorely blame speculators don't understand how markets work.

Everything ultimately has a fundamental value, if speculators are taking excessive amounts of positions expecting the price to go up, ultimately it will rise far beyond levels determined by supply and demand for the physical good and these speculators will stand to lose in their derivative position.

What is their incentive to inflate prices if they know that this will happen? Why not simply attempt to predict the market price accurately, whether it is trending up or down? Now obviously bubbles happen and what the video says about property investors heading into food commodities may well be true, but that is precisely why shorters have a role in the market to push the price down if it gets over-inflated.

You know when the video talks about hedge funds betting in price falls? What they conveniently omit to mention is taking these contracts puts downward pressure on prices.

Furthermore, whether high or low food prices hurt people in developing economies depends on who you're talking about. People living in country areas who rely on farming for their livelihood tend to gain from higher prices, urban dwellers tend to lose from it.

Demand and supply is also quite obviously driving increases in prices regardless of what you believe about speculation.

1) As developing countries have become wealthier they've shifted from a grain/rice diet to a more meat reliant diet, which is far more agriculturally intensive.

2) It's pretty self evident that weather instability has increased worldwide which destabilises prices.

3) Increased use in bio-fuels both in the US and Europe has taken up supply and pushed up prices.

4) All of these factors have in several cases resulted in countries establishing temporary trade barriers which in itself push up prices.

Point is, it's easy (and not entirely rational) to blame speculators but analysing all the factors at play (which this video brushes off) paints a far more complex picture.

How much would you pay for the universe?

ForgedReality says...

Considering the universe is a whole lotta nothin, I'd probably pay a whole lotta nothin. Everything we've seen and explored is a depressing, barren wasteland of nothingness. How about we go find a suitable planet to live on and wipe out all the dinosaurs on it so we can make a new home and build stargates between the two worlds so we can send nukes back and forth and wage war trying to control sections of that new world and destroy it just like we have this one?

I mean come on, people! Let's push up!

I'm skeptical about this video simply because of the way it was edited. I am always against police brutality and excessive force. I just don't like being misled. I too want to know the full situation. The news link is just someone's blog post. There is no actual investigative information.

At the start of the video you see the guys legs kick up and then brace against the sidewalk. He pushes up with his legs and locks forcing the officers and him into a standing position which actually increases the distance in which they slammed into the sidewalk.

The video clearly cuts out everything before the moment the officers grabbed the man and then quickly cuts out as soon as they clam the surrounding situation and begin to explain.

i understand the point you are making, but the general public typically does not. I'm not trying to short you or screw you over. I'm just doing my job properly. It is just too common we have glasses that make me and other bartenders look like we are skimping the customer. The goal is to make a drink visually appealing to the guest -- regardless of glass. All of us have to move the glass with the fluid in it.
hell, push-up bras are more frauds then our glassware.

Well.. racism could very well have an evolutionary basis. It could have served man-kind well earlier in our development well to keep in separate races/castes/groups/tribes and to demonize the other tribes, since we were in direct competition with them for food.

When you think of it that, then not being racist (a-racism?) is really the thing being learned in todays society and people who are racist have just not learned the value of not being a racist.

It could be a more basic thing that has an evolutionary basis, like fear of things that are different, which can evolve to "black/yellow/white/people are different, I hate them" or other bigotries.

I have no credentials for this, but so far no one else in here have any either, I'd wager, so I'm just making an observation.
>> ^schlub:

Don't talk about evolution as obviously, you don't understand THAT. Of course racism and bigotry is learned. Do you think it was imbued in people by 'god' or that it is instinctive? Where are your 'credentials' hmmm?

I don't give a shit how anyone dresses, nobody has the right to do anything to anyone regardless of how they look or are perceived. Nobody is ever asking for it.

Did you actually read my comment before downvoting? And using your analogy is just completely wrong. Racism, bigotry etc. are all learned behaviours, and are wrong. Treating a woman without respect is also wrong. However having a sexual drive is not wrong, finding a woman sexually attractive based on her displaying her body provocatively is not right or wrong, it's just nature at work, animal instinct. Acting on that feeling by sexually abusing the woman is wrong in so many ways, but I don't get how women can think that pushing up their tits, exposing their butt etc. is doing anything but attracting up the wrong sort of guys. I'm pretty sure it's not attracting the 'right' sort, that's for sure.
Sure they can dress slutty all they want, and they sure as hell shouldn't be abused for it, but I don't think they're going to find a fulfilling relationship either.

WHOA Whoa who says Racism and Bigotry is a learned behavior? We don't know enough about the human brain to make that determination and I would argue that a negative response to animals that look different from you might be something we always had. It certainly makes evolutionary sense.
Nah sorry you simply don't have the credentials to make that sort of claim.

WTF Beers Filling Up Through the Bottom!

kceaton1 says...

Yeah it looks to me like the cups are actually bottomless at the start. The lid is hidden inside the "filler"--which might be a small gimmick to either try to hide the method or make it look spiffy. Not so sure it'd actually have to be designed that exact way; could be a necessary design element though.

When she pushes one down you can notice that the "filler/holder" turns red (It's still in the glasses, afterward). There could be magnetism involved, but it seems more efficient (and a lot less expensive plus eco-friendly, unless they went to great lengths for recycling) to put a lid on via suction then clipping it into position as she takes it off. Think of it being like a fish hook or barbs (just not sharp ).

The lid is pre-positioned under top of the filler/nozzle (red barb/cap), she pushes down on the cup the filler opens (probably moving outward, while bending the cup slightly) the hole and "barbing" lid are pushed up into place via the system or just the beer's flow pressure. Then when she pulls it off it bends back and the hole is covered.

I'm guessing here, I didn't look at the site, but that's probably the type of way I'd do it.

Upper is useless now and wrong, but fun for an idea so I'll smallify it. Must remind myself to always WTFV; usually it's just RTFA.

Actually, @divurr looks completely right. The video of them pushing the cap off afterward plus the ring left (and the fact the system has "MAG" right in it) at the bottom really says magnetism is at play here (little side note: could be some sort of self adhesive as well). It looks like the cap is bent or rolled then injected after they fill it while they pull up which releases it or bends the bottom just enough to put it right in. Probably the latter. If it's a self adhesive you could then keep the cap, but with magnetism I would think they may want those back . (Like I said before: cost. With "MAG" being a throw off.)

I'll go with magnetism and a trade in system for the caps. Give them three back, they give a free drink, etc...

Can someone throw an ^engineering at this.
