Uhm... ok so in searching for the original "Powers of 10" video, which is the name that eludes you @ant, I hit up on this vid. Does this make it a dupe? The other vid is there in response to the original, which was narrated rather than a music video.

this isn't a fan made video. i'm pretty sure it's a public domain science education video. DJ shadow use to use it for his live performances. very cool video though.

Yeah, I can't remember its video name. It had no music IIRC.

I would say a dupe. I think you show throw this to SiftTalk.

And of course people are going to be less likely to buy something when they can get it for free.

Okay, I keep hearing this " big problem, people don't buy ". Can either of you back this up?

The facts the last time I checked were exactly the opposite, file sharing correlates with more purchasing. nobody is loosing money, they are just loosing control.

Until somebody can at least show an inverse correlation in ( profit/publication ):( files pirated ) I'm calling bullshit, the only problem with intellectual property in "western society" is that the public domain has been raided by infinite copyright terms.

Ultimately, the service they would provide would be content before any of the knock offs. Plenty of companies have tried to make knockoffs of wow, some even with otherwise very compelling universes in the baggage (lord of the rings online, warhammer online), but no one has come close yet. Star Wars the Old Republic might, but I doubt it. A rose by any other name is still WoW. And right now they have a critical mass of users, which is all they need. They could shit in a shoebox and call it Mist of Pandaria and millions will buy it on the release day.

Sure, there exists private servers of Wow at this point too, and some people like to play on them, but for me? I wouldn't even want to. There's no challenge when everything is possible.

I think we're talking about different things. Here you're describing people making "knock offs" of WoW by actually trying to independently create a new game from scratch without directly copying any artwork or code from WoW, but still kinda looks and feels and plays like WoW.

I'm talking about firing up the DVD-burner, and making a 100% exact copy of WoW. If that were legal, people would do it. In other words, the "private server" thing. Right now they're mostly script kiddies diddling themselves with Legendary items, because if they tried to actually replicate the WoW-server service and charge money for it, they'd be forced to shut down, and probably get thrown in jail too.

If that constraint weren't there, I'm sure you'd see an explosion of "competitors" for WoW "service". And I'm sure the market would explode with all kinds of people trying to differentiate themselves on service and price, but I'm sure the competition would force the average price well below what Blizzard's charging.

And that's the rub -- without being able to hold a monopoly over the monthly service charge, or even be able to demand $40 for the expansions, would Blizzard even bother with a Mists of Pandaria expansion?

I do think we could make things a lot better if they'd stop extending the time limit on things going into the public domain. Any content older than 10 years should be public domain, period.

Louis CK: Live at the Beacon Theater

Hive13 says...

I personally think this should be removed from here. It is $5 people, he wrote, produced and edited it himself and the success (or failure) of this web exclusive $5 show will determine if he does more in the future.

I, for one, am a HUGE Louie CK fan. I paid my $5 as soon as the show was available on his site. I think everyone should do the same. He's given me hours of laughs over the years and the least we can do is give him five measly dollars for all his hard work. After all, the entire $5 goes straight to him.

EDIT: Also, rule #4 from the Videosift FAQ: Please do not post entire episodes of television shows or movies, unless you know beyond a shadow of a doubt they are in the public domain. That's what BitTorrent is for.

Do You Know Who You're Talking To? (Sift Talk Post)

kceaton1 says...

My brother committed suicide one week and a half ago. No warning, except for a few small clues of "usual" depression. He most likely had Asperger's from everything we know. But, he never got diagnosed as he was paranoid of doctors and hadn't seen so much as a dentist in 13 years.

I've tried to commit suicide myself in the past. I failed and was diagnosed with bi-polar. My brother pulled his off without a hitch. He had no such second chance--to rise from your own ashes and learn to understand yourself, and in turn others.

I have the vision of hindsight with me now. I know just how dangerous these murky waters of the mind are. They are utterly ignorant. Unrelenting. These waves deceive your mind's eye and convey only one premonition to come. And just when you think it can't be worse reality chases you through your days and dreams like some harried demon; an elemental made of some compulsion filled fateful last night of twilight's last dance. The lighthouse throws shadows rather than light and all the ports are closed.

THAT is what it means to be lost, truly. It requires great effort to stave it off. It is very much like a pitching sea. You must treat it almost like a monster of the deep by going to your doctor and arming yourself with what you can. Drugs, meditation, life changes, and most importantly knowledge...

The Internet may be a trigger in some small amount of cases, I agree. But, it is at school before we become young adults that we need to know these things and learn where to get help. We need to know how to recognize all types in ourselves and others as it is a common place issue; meanwhile psychiatry still remains semi-taboo topic in the public domain, making it a bigger problem still. It's very hard to help someone set on suicide as they are very much like Ahab in "Moby Dick". Watch your words, but know it is never truly one needle that truly breaks the camel's back.

If we're going to single out this video, then perhaps we should look at some of the other full length movies/documentaries that have been posted here:

http://videosift.com/video/Pirates-of-Silicon-Valley1999
http://videosift.com/video/Scratch-The-Movie-Hip-Hop-Turntabilsmist-documentary
http://videosift.com/video/Easy-Rider-full-movie (looks dead now, I just called it)
http://videosift.com/video/Dark-Days-Full-Movie
http://videosift.com/video/Yellow-Submarine-full-movie

These are just a few I came across or have seen already on here. Unless these are all public domain films, they really shouldn't be posted.

I know VideoSift has always had this rule about posting full length movies/shows/whatever, which is why it has already perplexed me why I see so many of them posted.

I'd love to upvote this, but I have to agree that it is not in public domain and, as Sagemind wrote, it has major legal issues associated with it. It wasn't even purchasable for 15 years while the copyright issues got sorted out.
So if we stick by the Sift Guidelines it is not siftable. Would I like having it on the sift if it was within the guidelines? Absolutely.
I'm not a lawyer so maybe someone else could answer the question at hand: would sifting copyrighted material cause problems for VideoSift or only the site actually hosting the video?

rasch187 however is a lawyer, so maybe he can allay your concerns
