Science Moms

navlasop says...

I agree that the GMO hysteria is way overblown, and the science on it causing any ill effects are nill. Tough non-GMO supporters tend to say that there's no long enough studies.

True enough, if you want a lifetime study you'll have to wait a great deal longer, since GMO foods only went commercial in 1994, tough i'm sure the studies were going on for ages before that.

In any case, what concerns me is the patent of crops, and while today as far as i know, the strain is patented for 20 years (atleast in the US) After that they become public domain as far as its makeup\modification is concerned. Fair enough.

The only issue i fear (which is not logical ), is that if\when GMO's become the "norm", and non modified crops are basically not grown anywhere, the rulebook goes out the window, some politicians gets alot richer, and the corporations now own all the plants\seeds. Forever.

I know it's extremely unlikely, but i dare anyone not to nod and think "yep, corporations would do that in a second if they could get away with it".

Dumbo Teaser Trailer

Sagemind says...

This is purely about Disney needing to Reset all their property Trademarks. They need to remake every property they have in order for the licensing to remain intact and not fall into Public Domain.

They are doing this for every singe animated move they've made.

MOWGLI - Official 1st Trailer

MilkmanDan says...

Cool. I kinda liked the 2016 Disney Jungle Book movie, but they certainly need some reminders about what the public part of Public Domain means. They've benefited massively from it in the past century, but they are working really hard to try to prevent anyone else from doing the same in the next century...

John Oliver on Bill O'Reilly etc

I thought we aren't supposed to post full episodes (37.4). This can't be public domain already, can it? It aired last night.

The Little Mermaid 2017 - Official Trailer

HugeJerk says...

Disney doesn't own "The Little Mermaid"... it's public domain, originally from Hans Christian Andersen's story written in the 1800's.

Disney might have a trademark on their graphic for "The Little Mermaid", which probably always has "Disney's" in it.

Shepppard said:

Welp, real or fan made.. There's no way in hell disney is going to let them get away with the title.

Pretty sure that's trademark infringement, and being as Disney is making a billion live action remakes of all their old films (..including the lion king) I can only assume that this is going to be renamed insanely quickly.

Real Time Facial Re-Enactment

I don't think this is the sort of thing that wouldn't be happening if not for Stanford, but rather it wouldn't be happening in a transparent and openly published way. The entertainment and gaming industries alone guarantee these techniques will make steady progress.

In the description they mention a big part of their work is the detection of video edits to verify the authenticity of videos. Trying to keep state of the art programming techniques in the public domain can only help us spot this stuff and be less gullible as a society.

Lulz, what is it with people doing shit because they can, and never asking if they should? I thought the real time voice mimicry tech was bad enough...

MASSIVE Yellow Jacket wasp nest in Florida

It's Mickey Mouse. AKA, Mr. Mouse. AKA the Florida and California Kingpin.

The monster thats killing public domain..

Christ, it makes me wonder what the final boss of Florida is. I was thinking it's that golf course crocodile, but it seems they have no end of terrifying monsters.
