Jobs Official Trailer #1

ulysses1904 says...

I'm always amazed that anyone would even think that any biopic, movie, mini-series, or made for TV movie would be accurate. It's compressed, staged and artificial because that's the format that works for the medium. American pop culture eats its own feces, like when George Clooney made a movie about Chuck Barris (that great historical figure).

Tony Awards 2013 - Neil Patrick Harris and Mike Tyson

ChaosEngine says...

In light of how awesome that was, I feel churlish bringing this up; but what is with Mike Tyson coming back into things these days?

The guy's a convicted rapist. Yes, he served his time and everyone deserves a second chance, but do we really have to embrace him as some kind of pop culture icon?

In an atmosphere where everything from Penny Arcade to Game of Thrones is being labelled as a "trigger warning", why is no-one questioning this? If my facts are wrong, please correct me, but honestly, it seems pretty fucked up to me.

A Pop Culture Nostalgia Trip to the Year 1986

lucky760 says...

Finally was able to squeeze in 12 minutes to watch this...

Wow, I'd forgotten about so many of those video games and tv shows and songs... My mind is flooded with childhood memories...

It's wonderful having so many vivid memories and momentarily reliving in my mind what it felt like to be a child experiencing all those things first-hand.

It just makes me wonder how my boys are going to feel about the forthcoming formative years of their lives. Not only do I want to ensure they experience all the great things (and as few of the bad things) as possible that pop culture has to offer, but I just want them for the rest of their lives to be able to remember back to their childhood with fondness.

1999 in 10 Minutes

SDGundamX says...

Wow, 1999 was a great year for pop culture, but it was huge for FPS video games. Quake 3, Counter-strike, and Unreal Tournament... wow, nostalgia.

I think we can safely add this video to the following channels:

BANNED TED Talks Graham Hancock on Consciousness Emergence

shagen454 says...

Obviously, the brain is being tricked into something. What that is, is yes an astounding mystery. See, as I said before there is only one way to test your theory is to invest ten minutes and find out. But, I am sure you would want to pussy foot around with 10mg for a long while until you got to the 40mg, "breakthrough" dose. Which, no one is ever prepared for.

It is not like any other drug. Two seconds in and the person is in a trance. The first time I did it, I really was not expecting what it felt like to go into trance as your mind slips through some sort of portal into the unknown. Seeing pure energy, geometry, with eyes closed. I remember before I did it, I was interested in many aspects of it, seven foot tall black entities were never something I thought about or fantasized about. It is not some fear of mine. I was interested in seeing the afterlife.... and on the way maybe I would see that all the geometric mayan/eastern mandala stuff was bullshit. I wanted to discount the experience as well. But, I could not. And in fact I can see where the influence comes from even if the patterns one sees on this are far more intricate beyond the human imagination. Surely, this is a state the yogi, the buddhist, hindu monks spend their lives trying to get to.

I have given this to close friends. Afterwards, I give it some time and eventually I ask do you think that came from your imagination? And no one believes it does. A lot of what they saw came from absolutely no pop culture references. It came from nothing except knowing very little about it and trusting that I was not going to pop them to the other side of the universe. I still do not know where you are getting your assumptions from? No one knows of anything for sure. We hardly know anything about anything. Repeat that in your head.

I believe in Science first and foremost. But, whatever this is challenges just about all preconceived notions we have of what we actually are to the core. And even if it all proves to be just a trip. It would still challenge the preconceived notions we have of what we actually are.

I have no reason to doubt your sincerety, I'm willing to believe you've had really wierd and powerful experiences on this drug, experiences that might seem more real than the shared experience we refer to as reality. But however powerful and convincing such experiences might be, they are stil trips and hallucinations. they might be so powerful that you cant believe they are, but there is no reason to think otherwise. Our brains are fallible machines that are rather easily tricked, and this can be done by everything from chemicals to religion to a simple optical illusion. And just because it is a "trick" iow our brains being manipulated to experience things that arent happening in reality, doesnt mean it cant have a major effect on peoples life, ie: give people a new perspective on things. But it is not an "astounding mystery" as such, but of course it would be interesting to research the exact interactions that it causes in our brains, and how exactly it works.

One big tell that these trips are trips, is that they almost always include pop-sciency/cultural stuff of the time. In earlier times it involved exotic or mythical animals, in the 50s or 60s or 70s it was aliens and UFOs and stuff like that, and now its quantum physics and speed of light etc. This is a pretty solid sign that we are dealing with references from our own brain, it is in other words not external or new knowledge that's being obtained or discovered in the trip.

This Harlem Shake video is going to get removed soon!

Psychics Humiliated On National TV

ulysses1904 says...

I've been a fan of Randi since he was the executioner in the Alice Cooper shows in the early 70s. But I couldn't watch a minute of this crap. The host is a perfect blend of every TV/Internet/video/pop culture cliche. He makes Kathy Griffin seem tolerable.

The History of VideoSift Part I (Blog Entry by dag)

Taint says...

Great to hear the back story.

I remember my brother showing me this site at one point, and while I don't remember being instantly taken with it, but you chose your name well, and it stuck with me. I found myself visiting more and more. Now, rarely a day goes by where I don't browse through the sift just to see what's going on and whether there's a pop cultural meme of the moment that I wasn't aware of, a documentary I never heard of, or just the latest trailer to some movie that I wasn't aware they released yet.

You've built a brilliant web site with a great community. I often end up enjoying the comment section more than the videos themselves. It's everything that's good about entertainment on the web, and took something groundbreaking and massive like the creation of Youtube and gave it focus and purpose showing us what's worth our attention without having to -sift- through the pure dregs.

I continue to recommend it to anyone who will listen.

Thanks Dag

I must have showed up here after about 4-6 months in (choggie)and I recall being scrutinized by a senior member(farhad2000) through e-mail as to my politics, spirituality, etc. Soon realizing my opinions on most pop-culture, spiritual/religious views, and (A)political sensibilities were center to right of most children here, I set out not for laud or praise from the developmentally-disabled, but for infamy whether I wanted it or not....and that by accident.

Thank you all for your patience and willingness to grow together with folks much more talented and hipper than themselves, while maintaining a healthy sense of humor and hopefully, using that interaction to cultivate themselves.

Thanks to all, we have gotten many years out of this cheap trolling motor purchased used with very few hours of previous operation by one owner.

M4SONIC does it again.... Now with two launchpads. Awesome!

Agreed. >> ^Zifnab:

Sorry but I don't think this qualifies for the terrible channel (yes it is a terrible system, but that is now what the channel is for):
"Videos of terrible, awful What-Were-They-Thinking commercial/pop-culture products/releases. Terrible music videos, movies, TV show clips, toys, etc. Things that some corporate exec decided to actually give a green light. The sorts of things that you watch, and think "SOMEBODY should have known better that to release that". The stuff that's so bad, you can't help but share.">> ^messenger:

A Mess of Memes

poolcleaner says...

>> ^braschlosan:

Forced memes are forced.

I wouldn't say they're forced memes. Just awesome clips from television and film that turned into image and quote responses on the internet. People just used them so often that they were attributed meme status. A meme isn't anything special, just repeated behavior.

I'm fairly certain you and most people know this, but let's remove the title of "meme" for a second and reevaluate these clips outside the pop cultural standard. When you do that, it takes away the perceived negative impact that calling them memes produces. They're all pretty funny and clever clips for the most part, fellow cynic.
