Huckabee is Not a Homophobe, but...

Jinx says...

Idk. Phelps et al took homophobia to a whole new level. It's easy to rail against such a comic book villain. Disagreeing with Phelps, even on his stance on homosexuality, doesn't necessarily mean you still don't have a mostly negative attitude towards homosexuality. I'm thinking of the "hate the sin, love the sinner" crowd. I think Huckabee and his ilk fit into this sort of "homophobia lite". They dress their bigotry up in platitudes and are likely to find support from some or the same people who might have decried Phelps. One might look towards Russia in the run up to Sochi. There you see the same sort of stance, where they enact policy that strips gays of their rights whilst insisting that its not borne of homophobia and is merely to protect children from paedophiles. I do not doubt their sincerity in this belief - most homophobes don't identify themselves as homophobes.

Ultimately I think these extreme undiluted views create an illusion of overwhelming support for gay rights. Perhaps the publicity raised a debate about homosexuality/phobia, but that debate still had to be fought and won by gay rights activists, not through us all uniting against a sort of shill.

I certainly hope things continue the way they have been. Still, there are parts of the world which seem to be regressing in this regard (see Russia again -.-). I have a feeling that rallying against any minority group is always going to be an effective political tactic, especially if it's done under the guise of protecting children from sexual abuse or preserving "family values".

Just think, Fred Phelps did more to help Gays gain sympathy and rights than probably any of you did.

Gay Hugs - An Experiment With Homophobes

chingalera says...

Yeah, couldn't stand it. Poorly produced, inadequately rendered and 6 'gay' women who don't care to give their names in the production credits (paranoia?).

Guess I could go check out their gay women channel and see if they have any actual talent for making videos, like many lesbians (and people in general), there's an inordinate amount of gay folks that are hard to stand to be around for too long, and it has nothing to do with their sexuality or any phobias. More to do with their character and strength of will. A mixed-bag of personality disorders tend to remind me how fucked-up the world is becoming and I'm not a mental health professional. My empathy and sympathy stores go part and parcel with the energy allotment for my own well-being and sanity.

Russell Brand Interviewed By A Very Excited Fan

artician says...

That really brought a smile to my face. I personally don't know how to act around people I meet in every day life, so interactions with disabled people have always been extra difficult. I do my honest best to be a kind person to everyone, but I fail miserably in that (phobias and avoidance, nothing mean, ever). I dig Russell Brand for his insane dip into celebrity and then the rationalization and intelligence to come out the other side seeing things as they really are for everyday individuals (politically, etc).
This video just makes my day because he's so wonderful to this girl, and she makes my day for pursuing her goals so honestly (or deceptively, in terms of affection).

DIY spider projection. Giant spiders crawling all over.

Yeah, this is about the sickest shit I have seen this year in the realm of projection DIY. Brilliant and bizarre. This simple project will wreak more terror into passing motorists with certain phobias....OMG, talk about yer damaged psyches for miles!!!

Dog terrified of low-fat lamb jerky

KrazyKat42 says...

>> ^Dread:

My guess is that there is something in the jerky that he is smelling as very unhealthy or bad. Notice his reaction only comes after he smells the jerky. Personally I would not touch that shit with a ten foot pole either after seeing his reaction.
If the apocalypse came I would roam around with a pooch, and I would present him with any food I found. If he wouldn't eat it you can bet your ass (and I guess mine)I wouldn't.
Unless we have an example of a similar breed of dog that is not reacting with such aversion to the same product.
The only other option is that he for some reason has a phobia of something to do with the jerky. Which I find to be a possibility but incredibly unlikely.

True. If my dog wouldn't eat it there is no way I would eat it. Dogs eat anything. There must be something seriously wrong with that jerky.

No Needles - (Advanced) Jet-Injected Drugs

ReverendTed says...

Let's talk about pain for a moment. It's alluded to, but the video and the Wikipedia article don't really specify.
It's stated that this eliminates the needle, but it's only suggested that this is less painful than a needle injection. ("You don't feel the mosquito proboscis.") I'd expect that even without the needle, the rapid delivery of the medication would still produce a sting.
My brief Google research supports that assumption, with sites like this one and this one saying that the current generation of jet injectors can produce a painful sensation depending on a number of individual factors.

This still allows for a greater degree of control (in situations when that type of precision is necessary), and may be of help to individuals with needle phobias, but I'm skeptical about the real utility over the status quo.

TSA Nabs Terrorist At Airport, a Toddler in a Wheelchair!

Auger8 says...

Ya I sorta wondered about the age of this clip as well but it still shows the TSA asserting their authority for no other reason than to make themselves look important. I mean really this kid was flagged as a threat? Seriously come on! He had an obvious broken leg and needed the wheelchair to move around.

What do they really suspect terrorist are using 5 year olds in bomb laden wheelchairs with fake broken legs to blow up planes it's just plain old abuse of power if you ask me.

>> ^njjh201:

So: the TSA security pantomime is tremendously silly, as Salon's Ask The Pilot and many others have pointed out.
But the toddler in this video is not terrified, he's hungry and slightly grouchy. Notice how when he appears upset, parent reassures him they'll be eating soon?
Notice also how the 'terrified' toddler doesn't scream with fright, cry, and utterly obstruct the TSA agent, as a genuinely terrified child would (ever watched a child of that age who has serious phobia of needles get a shot?)
Notice also how the TSA agent performs his (intrusive, pointless and yes maybe unconstitutional) task sensitively, in a calm and reassuring manner. He is gentle, he gets down to the child's level, he doesn't raise his voice or rush. (In particular I note that he doesn't fondle the child's genitals. I thought that was standard TSA practice?!)
Yes the TSA security pantomime is silly, but so is the right wing claim that investigations such as these amount to child-rape. They plainly don't.
Which leads me to my question: this happened almost two years ago. Why has it only just surfaced?

Homophobic message in public Iowa school

definitely wasn't "homophobic" <- the new political correct term
phobic/phobia is a fear of, such as I have arachnophobia, but even though I am anti-gay, I do not have homophobia.
political correctness wants to redefine words, such as trying to redefine phobia to also mean hate.
again I am arachnophobic but I do not hate spiders, I fear them.

Why are you anti-gay?

I wonder what else he is "anti" about? Africans? Jews? People who aren't blond?

Phobos is greek...means fear or hatred according to Homo Stephen Fry...he would know don't ya think?

It's very very hard to fear something and not hate it for being something that exists and you fear. I'm sure you can consult a psychiatrist with a better analysis. In my opinion though, you're a moron.

The term "homophobia" refers to anti-gay sentiment and you know it. Stop splitting hairs, homophobe.

there's those political correct people popping in...
stop using the wrong word, created by the p.c. movement.
I am no homophobe I do not fear, I am anti-gay but that's my life and my family I don't care what others do.
You should download some George Carlin albums and give a listen, hopefully it will reverse what the political correct brainwashing has done.

You want to call it what it is? Fine...you're a bigot.

YAY
Now there ya go, Yes I am prejudice against certain things and of course I'm a bigot.
I wouldn't be human if I had certain preferences, if everyone thought alike and had the same morals and ethics we'd be sheep with no individualism which is what political correctness wants to remove from people is their individuality. George Carlin although a comedian was dead right 100% on that point.
And just as he said on stage, Of course I'm a bigot, I'm human. No phobias here other than spiders -grin-

Of course...those of us who object to your unreasonable hatred are only trying to stamp out individuality. And you object to -our- redefining words?

At least ours kept the word in somewhat similar realms. Not that I expect rationality from a homophobe or a bigot.
