Backwards Somersault Penalty

Best penalty kick ever.

Oy, I knew people would blame the goalie for celebrating. Come on, you'd assume the ball would keep traveling back after it was deflected 20 feet in the air. Not that it's forward momentum would be precisely canceled, while acquiring enough topspin to bounce forward when it lands. It was a freak event, that's what makes it INTERESTING.

No, I would've instantly deduced everything you just wrote and my cat-like reflexes would've taken it from there.

Almost there, but not quite... This is a "Penalty Shootout" which means after the kick the field player cannot play the ball again. The shot isn't considered "missed" or "Dead" until the ball has stopped and has expended all momentum. Thus, this shot would be counted and the Keeper has no one to blame but himself.

Yeah, it counts: "The ball is in play once it has been kicked and moved, and at this point in time other players may enter the penalty area and play continues as normal."

Best penalty kick ever.

Hmm... Some Internet contrarian are saying that an after-the-game penalty kick (such as this) is over when the ball is stopped, and that by stopping the forward motion of the ball this play was dead. The Fifa rule book doesn't seem entirely clear on when such penalty kicks are over. But I think this is definitely a goal and the ball was not stopped.

The penalty kick is stopped once it's forward momentum of the ball is spent. Obviously in this case it wasn't spent...the was no second touch to propel it towards the goal...it just came off and spun in. If the keeper had stopped it completely and then tossed it into the goal it wouldn't have counted.

I agree that it's a goal, but..
the forward momentum of the ball was spent, ..on rotational momentum, ..which was cashed in later for new forward momentum at a higher rate of exchange.

Ok fine the point is that it was not propelled towards goal by the kicker a second time.

just, so we're clear, because I highly doubt you watch baseball at all, I will re-state that there isn't a whole lot of standing around.
People don't stand there and hold up the game while they warm up, that's what the batter-on-deck system is for, so when one batter has hit/walked/struck out, the next one can just walk up and take his place at home plate. There's roughly 1-2 minutes between innings, except for the 7th inning stretch when they usually bring out some form of pep squad, but on the whole, baseball has no down time other then time outs, which in the long run probably spells out less time lost then a soccer game because of the cards/penalties/free throws/penalty kicks, etc.
Batter is up to bat, pitcher pitches, the MOST pitches one batter can ever take is 6. All the while, there's bases potentially being stolen, and the pitcher continues to throw, with maybe 20 seconds of transition while the next batter steps up to the plate.

20 seconds of transition? time between each pitch for the same player is longer than 20sec.
any game that doesn't use 'dirty time' is a snoozefest...short of hockey

We beat Spain...that's something even if it wasn't a big tournament you can bet they weren't just laying down. We're getting it and investing in the youth of our sport more and more each year which is good, it's a slow growth process but it's steadily catching on.
Also this was ruled a handling foul and in my opinion absolutely is. There is still a great deal of debate in the refereeing community if it deserves to be called a handling foul though and the goal called back.

I'm on board with everything you are saying!
I do feel that video replay for goals and penalty kicks should be implemented to cut down on diving, uncalled handballs, and improper offside calls.

France cheats its way into World Cup

Tyrsis says...

What really bothers me about this is that people seem to think this is a huge controversy, yet bad calls are made in all sports. Anyone who watches any other sport knows this. I can't believe people are trying to petition to have the game replayed. It seems a bit ridiculous to me, and sets a bad precedent. In fact I can pin point in almost every game this year for my favorite hockey team, where the officials made a bad or wrong call, but it's not like I will petition to have the game replayed. It's naturally part of the game. While it's unfortunate that a bad call was made for a world cup qualifier, people should naturally take bad calls as being part of the experience, for better or worse. How many games have been won/lost due to diving which caused a penalty kick?

The only thing here that needs to be looked at is how the game is regulated by the officials. If they can't properly spot hand balls in that area of the field, either add more officials, or instant replays for goals which disallows goals on obvious rule infractions.
