$750,000 from the special edition straight in to their pocket minus the cost of producing the package and shipping.

That really only works if you're already famous (most likely due to a record label's promotions). An unknown band would be lucky to get $75 straight in to their pocket, much less enough to actually live on.

Say what you like, the recording industry does do one thing -really- well...promote their goods. Well, two things, if you count ripping off their artists.

There was another story that I can't find a link to of a San Franciscan musician who languished for years ignored by big labels until he put his music up on P2P with his email address. Within days he started receiving requests to play live with offers of appearence fees, travel costs covered etc. Overnight he went from untouchable by labels to making a pretty fine living travelling and making his music. He has never sold a CD or single.

Another good read is:

Chapter 13 (sry bout the huge link, google books is a bit meh ; )

Obviously, some people don't have the know how or don't want to spend the time to manage their own affairs to maximise their profits, but it's a very viable business and people are using it.

Someone should start upping the productivity in education, to keep up with the other sectors. if new technologies and techniques can be invented for everything else, why not schools? And I'm not talking about fancy virtual blackboards and telepresence; I'm thinking about the studies that say that homework, for instance, makes no difference to learning, but makes a huge negative difference by antagonizing kids from going to school.

Maybe someone could start an accredited university that only had exams, no classes, but unofficially expected students to download pirated MIT or Harvard lectures by P2P. just a half-baked idea, but inflated tuition fees are definitely an obstacle for this demographic.

Oh well, at least all the people who lose their jobs at the factory can become schoolteachers... "If you can't do, teach. And if you can't teach, teach Gym."

It was at torrentreactor. I suggest not visiting .. lol.
I don't use torrents or any p2p (not saying I don't ever pirate, but I use altbinz and astraweb for that sort of thing). Anyway, I forget what the hell I was even searching google for, I've been following the goings on with the pirate bay situation and I guess I saw a link that looked interesting at torrentreactor and bang! Firefox crashed to desktop without even an error. 70ish smtp ports opened. Svchost crashed. Unplugged the modem. Rest is history.

Faux News/Norton Antivirus fail

^ What exactly do you mean by "antivirus scam"?

Most people, particularly those that don't use P2P or torrents and browse only well known sites have absolutely no need for anti-virus/trojan programs. Especially costly subscription ones when there free variants that will quell any latent paranoia.

Wrong. You can get viruses from websites. My Wordpress blog and three friends' sites were hacked and used to propagate viruses.

If you're going to use a PC[*], please use an antivirus program; free or otherwise.

[*] PC is here defined as "computer running Windows". If you are a Linux user or Mac user, you are, of course, smarmily resistant to these pests and can skip running AV software for the time being, ya smarmy bastards.

Perils of sharing the internet - advice please (Howto Talk Post)

dgandhi says...

This is fully possible, but requires serious geekery, and a unix based router.

To block torrents I suggest using the routing technique for blocking skype which does not allow CONNECTs to non-resolved addresses ( can get to google.com, can't go to 74.125.67.100 ) and should stop just about anything with a p2p architecture.

If the router is OpenWRT compatible( it seems to be), then you could get the router to do pretty much anything, but this is also heavy geekery, and runs the slight risk of bricking the router.

It costs $30,000 to fill an iPod?

demon_ix says...

If it's alright with you, Mr. Microsoft ad dude, I'd rather pay for my internet connection, and download whatever I want, whenever I want it, through whatever website/program/p2p network that allows me to do so.

And actually, even if it's not alright with you.

Yea. People who buy iPods really buy $30,000 worth of songs. Pffft.

Eden of the East (東のエデン Higashi no Eden) OP

GuyIncognito says...

From Production IG, the Japanese anime studio behind the Ghost in the Shell series, comes Eden of the East. The opening sequence uses a combination of CG, kinetic typography, and traditional animation. Through AnimeSuki, which links to all unlicensed English anime fansubs available through the P2P file swarming application BitTorrent, you can follow Eden of the East each Friday. So far, this series has been pretty amazing.

The song is Falling Down by Oasis. You can find the music video here:

Pirate Bay: Guilty

EDD says...

You're talking to somebody who produced a game which showed up on TPB days before official release (got leaked from the distributors-but everyone involved in the making of said game was glad for the extra popularity).
So yeah, like MaxWilder said, don't assume.

Oh, I see. It's okay to steal stuff if you can't afford it.
You guys just don't get it because you have never made anything that was pirated. Your viewpoint is from the pirate side.

EDD says...

Blaming piracy for lack of sales of your games is a COMPLETE and UTTER bullshit whiners' argument.

Less then half a percent of all the folks that are downloading them illegally off p2p networks actually have the financial means to buy those games. Although it depends on the region - in Eastern Europe, for example, I am absolutely certain the figure is less than 0,01%. There have even been many user polls in a lot of torrent trackers on this. Anyway, if it actually turns out to be a really good game, a lot of folks that pirated it in the first place tend to buy it afterward. Which has played a major role in why Steam is so successful.

It's not piracy that's to be blamed for problems in the gaming industry, it's the outrageous number of god-awful games that are being released.

Honestly, who gives a shit. P2P is a joke. Always was. Why people even use it, when there are so much easier, older, more reliable and complete ways .. that don't revolve around any type of torrent technology (encrypted or not) is beyond me.

ABC 7.30 Report - Australian Mandatory Internet Filtering

charliem says...

The religious zealots and conservative overlords that are pushing this agenda are totally oblivious to the technical implications this has, totally ignorant to the civil liberty implications this has, and are massively overstating how easy to access, and wide-spread child porn is on the internet.

Just from random clicking, you will not find kiddie porn, anywhere. Its all shared on private networks through newsgroups and p2p, the stuff isn't up on HTTP sites, and the filters are not capable of filtering p2p.

The comment that Conroy made in parliament when he was being question on the filter: "surely you are not suggesting people have access to child pornography" is the red herring here. Its a tactic used to deliberately shut down any descent on the filter, destroying legitimate questions with regard to ethics on the list of banned sites, what it would be open to, how many people would know about it, who would be held responsible when it got leaked, how they would go about actually capturing those responsible for the content, the technical limitations of the software etc. etc...

Conroy and his ilk are gigantic fucking morons that have got to go.

The filter is a big joke, noone in their right mind would defend kiddie porn, but to impose such a restraint on the last bastion of free speech in the world because of an over hyped belief of wide-spread child porn is the biggest injustice that Conroy could do to his portfolio.

K-rudd has got to dump him, as he is quickly becoming a one-termer.
