Powering the Cell: Mitochondria

zombieater says...

>> ^conan:

useless without explanation. could also be a moby music video.

Well, being a biology professor let me try and help you out...

0:13 - 0:22 - mitochondria

0:23 - 0:29 shows glucose (long blue string) with associated phosphates floating in the cytoplasm. I believe those are phosphates (?) coming off as it enters the mitochondrion. Though there should only be 1 phosphate, so this may be incorrect.

0:30 - 0:32 show the extramembranous proteins on the exterior of the mitochondrion.

0:37 we enter the mitochondrion.

0:38 - 0:47 we float through the mitochondrion. Notice the green double-helixed DNA at the left and bottom of the screen. This is mitochondrial DNA. I believe those other colored things floating around are later molecules from the Krebs Cycle - they could be miscellaneous intermediary molecules such as oxaloacetate and citrate.

0:48 - 0:54 we see the cristae (inner foldings) of the mitochondrion with the transmembranous proteins along it. The small molecules floating around are ADP and ATP.

0:55 - 0:59 we see NADH and FADH2 floating to a transmembranous protein (purple) and becoming oxidized, losing their electron. The green/blue colored sea on the bottom of the screen is the membrane (phospholipids).

1:00 - 1:01 we flip to the opposite side of the membrane, to the outer membranous space. The tentacle-looking things is part of the membrane, the phospholipid bilayer.

1:02 - 1:07 I'm not entirely sure which part this is...if I had to guess I'd say it was an electron carrier.. perhaps ferredoxin transporting electrons from protein to protein in the electron transfer chain, which is why it glows (electron-rich) as it moves from protein to protein.

1:07 - 1:10 we see millions of protons flowing DOWN through the transmembranous proteins, into the outer membranous space (bottom) from the matrix (top). This creates a hypertonic concentration of protons in the outer membranous space.

1:10 - 1:14 we see ATP synthase, the main energy-producing enzyme that rotates on the cristae (part of the electron transport chain). This enzyme has a stationary portion and a rotating portion (purple and part of the brown at the top). When protons flow back into the matrix from the intermembranous space, ATP synthase rotates, creating energy. You can see the dull yellow-colored (energy-low) ADP getting transformed (being phosphorylated) into the bright white-colored (energy-high) ATP.

1:15 - 1:21 we see the phoshporylation of ATP up close. A phosphate is added to ADP to produce ATP. This is done by ATP synthase via the energy produced by the movement of protons.

1:22 - 1:29 just an overview of the whole phosphorylation process. You can see the energy-rich ATPs moving into the outer-membranous space through pores in the membrane.

1:30 - 1:32 shows a close-up of this ATP movement, to the outer-membranous space, and eventually out of the mitochondrion to be used by the cell for energy.

Bombardier Beetle - Master Of Chemical Warfare!

entr0py says...

I'm trying to cut down on the Wikipedia quoting, but this is too awesome:

Defense mechanism
Secretory cells produce hydroquinones and hydrogen peroxide, which collect in a reservoir. The reservoir opens through a muscle-controlled valve onto a thick-walled reaction chamber. This chamber is lined with cells that secrete catalases and peroxidases. When the contents of the reservoir are forced into the reaction chamber, the catalases and peroxidases rapidly break down the hydrogen peroxide and catalyze the oxidation of the hydroquinones into p-quinones.

These reactions release free oxygen and generate enough heat to bring the mixture to the boiling point and vaporize about a fifth of it. Under pressure of the released gases, the valve is forced closed, and the chemicals are expelled explosively through openings at the tip of the abdomen. Each time it does this, it shoots about 70 times very rapidly. The damage caused can be fatal to attacking insects and small creatures and is painful to human skin.

Bill Maher on the Fallacy of 'Balance'

^Exactly.

My house caught on fire and I had to call the Nationalized High Temperature Oxidation Regulation Stromtrooper Force to come and put it out. Those government goons completely ruined my carpet by squirting fluoridated water -the same kind they put in toilets- all over it from water based hose cannon weaponry guns. Tyranny!

This is definitely going into my watch when tripping folder

One of my fondest hallucination memories: sitting under a tall tree in a park late at night, the only sound was that almost magical white noise rushing through leaves, and I was at the peak of an LSD trip, having just inhaled some nitrous oxide. I lay down and looked up, and the canopy of the tree was silhouetted against the sky. The entire view turned into a 3-dimensional animated fractal set for a good minute or so.

Words probably can't convey the amalgamation of sensory experience that made that moment so exhilarating, but a part of this video triggered that memory quite strongly for me. Makes me want to trip again (it's been a long time).

Batter Blaster Spray Pancakes

choggie says...

You know what works better than the Batter (stuck with whatever funky batter mix inside) Blaster? Mix up your favorite batter and put it into a pastry bag with your choice of tip. Interested to get a can an see what the added air does for the consistency,Are you really that lazy that you need it in a can? Whipped cream for that matter-a waste of good Nitrous Oxide!! Otherwise-Does it come in Belgian Waffle Mix?

Hmmmmmmm? A pot roast, coat it with a can of this bout' 15mins from done, voila. Baste with yer choice of reduction!!

Holy Grail of Energy?

rottenseed says...

This comment interested me so I did a little morning time research. You are right in stating that this technology has been out there for a long time. One of the major down falls of conventional SOFC's are that they require a high operating temperature. The efficiency of SOFC's limitations lie in the material they use because of the high operating temperatures. The bloom box claims to have solved this problem with a fairly cost effective solution for what materials to use (melted sand = glass?). They were always made from ceramic before, I don't know what improvements glass have over ceramics. I don't know if their claims are all true. Too early to tell since it was just "released".

That all being said, I don't understand what the hoopla is about, either. You'd still need to bring some sort of natural gas to each "bloom box". Let's say tomorrow, we took out all the power plants and replaced every home and business with one of these devices. Let's say they operate at 70% efficiency (10% more than traditional SOFC's), would this be more energy efficient than a power plant. Would it cost us any less natural resources to run our planet? Those questions are a little more difficult to find out. Gotta do some more research on power plants. Somebody with a degree have any insight?>> ^joedirt:
You guys are total suckers and idiots.
This is like ancient technology. It is just a solid oxide fuel cell.
The only thing interesting is that they have existing fuel cell installs at eBay and google.
This won't be cheap or better. All it does is capture the big green energy investors and also it uses tax rebates in places like California to let rich people subsidize their electricity.

The Sift needs a GUITAR channel (User Poll by guitarwolf)

choggie says...

I voted yes, but campion is righteous in his observations, eh? Tell ya what, fellow strummer....may I? Make a website dedicated just that. I tried an accordion channel, it did not work out so well.

By the by, bang for the buck-wise, I have decided that the guitar to use as the primary care giver for myself, to be the Gibson SG...Out of the box, perfection but a bit of tweaking in the hands of a smitty, n she'll give ya hours of unadulterated pleasure-I like the effects package of the Digitech EX-7 expression factory pedal, though the functionality of an everything-in-one pedal is a frikkin live-music nightmare....you simply can't beat the individual spread of the palatalized gearbox.

My second choice for guitar would be a resonator , one that fits yer particular style of pickin' and pressure...try a Johnson or a Dean. Oh and, the warm glow of the tube amp, only. The Marshall has gotten better and better with the solid-state/tube combos...try a Vintage Modern 2266C, for all yer ear-bludgeoning needs.

Alas, I have lost my gear this last year to pawn....another reason to forego nitrous oxide and cocaine, until you become liberated from the bonds of the devil, money....or I mean, forever.

Enhanced South Tower Image W/Explanation

NordlichReiter says...

Did any one else see that title and think of CSI? ENHANCE! ENHANCE! ENHANCE!

In all seriousness, the buildings fell ~3,000 people died. Let the building theories rest already. I'm more concerned with the gross misconduct of the defense systems that we so dearly pay for with our hard earned fiat dollars.

Also, more people die of heart related ailments a year than all of those who died in the twin towers.

While this may not be completly factual it is a healthy dose of reality. I say it may not be factual because I don't see a citation on it anywhere.

Trust me there are far more dangerous things to worry about, like the oxidation of your razor blades which could cause staph infection which could result in Necrotizing fasciitis. While it is rare to get this sort of thing rust usually denotes an unclean razor which could contain infection most commonly staph.

^ I'm not sure what they are measuring. A quick search resulted in some air pollution numbers from 2000, but the US's portion of the world's output was a little below 45%.

Carbon Monoxide: 13.86%
Sulfur Dioxide: 8.41%
Nitrogen Oxide: 6.52%
Non-methane VOC: 9.78%

Maybe they meant 45% of the total released from all vehicles worldwide? That's the best I can think of.

Audi Suicide Ad

i would call *lies, because it feeds the legend of "clean" diesel technology, just as Peugeot ads claiming that particle filters are the solution to any diesel problem. just because you don't see any particles anymore you still have lots and lots of nitric oxides. argh i'm being a smartass again.

Sorry to sound a bit of an idiot, but if (and only if) this expiriment were to be assumed in a vacuum, would it not be possible to fire a gun as the bullet would require oxygen for the gunpowder to ignite?
Just askin'.

Most modern "bullets" (cartridges to be precise, the bullet is just the projectile) have their oxidizer mixed in with the explosive. They can actually fire even underwater.
