Ruin - Post-Apocalyptic Short CGI Film

You guys didn't get that he was some kind of cyborg that controlled technology with his hands? And yes, given enough time, trees will grow anywhere.

I would be more skeptical of a skinny hipster surviving the apocalypse, along with his own suicidal style of motorcycle riding.

One Way To Deal With A DUI Checkpoint (Refusal)

DrewNumberTwo says...

Sure, being investigated for murder is the example, but the concepts apply to any crime that a person is being accused of. Just because they're asking him about drinking doesn't mean that drunk driving is the only crime that they're interested in right then, and I'm sure that he didn't want to provide any evidence that he had done that, either.

He wasn't actually being asked to submit to a breathalyzer test because they can't search him without probable cause. But to answer any question at all that he's not legally required to answer puts him at risk of accidentally providing evidence that he committed a crime. Why would he take that chance if he didn't have to? Note the first thing the video shows:

Yes, I have and I thought it was an interesting video that I mostly agreed with. I also think it's complete overkill in this situation.
You're not being investigated for murder (which seemed to be the canonical example in the Don't Talk to Cops issue), you're being asked to submit to a breath test while driving. Now if you were at home, at work, or just out in public, I would say get stuffed. But you are literally in control of a vehicle at the time. There's no ambiguity here.

"Submit to VideoSift" Bookmarklet For Your Web Browser (Sift Talk Post)

Awesome feature. My only suggestion: it would be nice if the "Close VideoSift Submit" button would go away after I navigate away from the submission page (ie. I've either submitted the video, or decided not to submit and am browsing the rest of the site).

Totally wish we could do anything that would allow you to close the overlay from within the overlay, but it's unfortunately just not within the realm of possibility due to security restrictions in all modern web browsers.

I misread. Making that button go away alone would be confusing because the URL in your web browser will stay the same (for the video host page). I suppose we could do something like add another special button like "Browse VideoSift" that could launch VS standalone, but that's probably overkill and will add too much clutter I'm guessing. (If lots of people disagree, though, let us know and maybe we'll make a change.)

The guy is in Georgia. Laws in regards to such things are the same, as in that they are not regulated at the state level, only federal. Anyone with a clean background and the cash can own them. Fill out the appropriate paperwork and pay the excise taxes and you're ready to go.

Also note, on stuff like explosive rockets and grenades, there is a $200 tax on each one, so it can add up fast...But there are limits on what is considered an explosive. Off the top of my head, I think anything under 1/4oz of powder and it's not considered an explosive. Furthermore, to have explosives, you have to have a proper magazine to store them, can't just keep them in your house.

So in other words, the things are so regulated to get and use, that you have to be smart enough to know the laws to get through the paperwork, and rich enough to be able to buy them. Unless you are a manufacturer, then you can do what you want. I have a hunch he is either a manufacturer, or son/relative of one. And whoever owns them is rich and has a lot of land. You'd be surprised at how many collectors there are with the same stuff, they just don't post it on Youtube

not a perfect process... but what is seen in the video seems reasonable

as an american living overseas for many years, i've seen american bureaucracy at its worst in our consulates, embassies and trade offices ... what is seen in this video pales in comparison

try this one on for size before complaining of invasive, unfair requirements and possible conspiracy:

my son is born overseas and i want to apply for his us citizenship / passport

i try to phone the embassy to ask what documents i will need to bring by three-hour train ride - i get a 10-minute phone tree that answers nothing and simply refers me to their website, which is rattled-off so quickly that i need to listen to the 10-minute phone tree two more times to jot the url down

the website explains that answers cannot be given over the phone, and i can only speak to a human in an emergency circumstance - the website gives me some ambiguous answers, and states that if i have questions i will need to make an appointment online - an online calendar appears showing me possible appointment dates/times - all monday to friday between 9-11am and 2-4pm... also the american citizen services section is closed for all american holidays AND those of the host country - yay for having to take unpaid time off from work!

i get a date and time to appear, and i try to collect all relevant information to only make a single visit

at the appointed time, i appear and am told to surrender my bag and phone, pass through a metal detector, and then i am frisked - upon arriving at the proper office, i am given a number and told to wait - when my number is called, i approach the proper window and speak to an 'american' through a speaker system embedded in the 1-inch bulletproof glass

i have somehow managed to have most all of the necessary documents (not to the website's credit, but to my overkill), but one requirement stops me... they don't accept that i am a us citizen... what the hell?!

i show them my original us birth certificate, my valid us passport, my valid us driver's license, my social security card, proof of my us address, my us high school and university diplomas, my voter registration card, etc...

all are unacceptable proof...

i am told that to satisfy their requirement, they will need at least five-years' worth of us school transcripts from a single us location... since i was a military brat, and changed schools often, this was an impossibility

i finally get through to a supervisor who i had phone my state senator, who is a family friend, and he rips them one and they finally relent

clear? nope... one further requirement is that my son's notarized foreign birth certificate needs to be translated into english and notarized - i have the translation but not the notary seal (this can only be done at the embassy) - i ask them to notarize it and they inform me that i will have to leave and mail it to them with a check and pre-paid, express-mail return envelope - once i receive that, i should set up a new appointment and return... with their assuring me that the process (CRBA) would be complete at that point

i do what they said, and two weeks later I receive the now-notarized translation and set up a new appointment - i return at the stipulated time with all the proper documents and go to pay the fee...

then i am told that my infant son has to be present as well... and so the process can't be completed at that time

i return home, a 6-hour roundtrip commute by train, and set up a new appointment... returning with my 6-month-old son so that they can see him through the bullet proof glass, and then i can pay the exorbitant fee

as if all of this isn't enough, the cashier will not provide change... and they want me to leave, set up a new appointment and return with exact change - i offer to leave 'a tip' of close to us$20 in order to finalize this ridiculous process without having to return... they refuse

having read all of this... can you still complain about what this woman and her son had to go through?

nonsense

Zero Punctuation: Dragon Age II

Ariane says...

Every change they made from DAO to DA2 was bad. In DA2, Combat is a confusing mess. Crafting, runes, armor, and even weapon mods are all completely pointless, tacked on as an after thought, and you can easily complete the game without any of that stuff. The interface was overkill. The DA:O interface is as easy to use as wikipedia, the DA2 interface felt like someone wrote a crappy and unnecessary flash overlay for wikipedia.

The change most people seemed to enjoy the most was the fact that the player character has a voice in this game. And yet oddly, I am more satisfied with the lack of voice in DA:O, because it required some imagination on my part. I felt attached to my Warden, where as in DA2 I felt detached, like I was watching a fictional character play out a story. Worse yet there are no maps in DA2, even though all the locales are attached o one another. The lack of geography added to the detachment.

Which brings me to comparing stories. DA2 had a very linear story. There were no game changing decisions to be made until half way through act 3, where you have to decide on Mages vs Templars, and that would decide what ending you get. DAO had half a dozen major decisions, and a couple a dozen minor ones, and new story arcs always opened up depending on your choices. In DAO, I controlled the fate of Ferelden, and in DA2 I was forced to surrender to fate.

Bottom line, DA2 did not really feel like a true RPG. Its like they left the RP part out and I was playing just a G (video game). Had they kept the DAO engine, and DAO combat, and DAO crafting, and NPC customization, and just made some graphic improvements, the game would have been a hell of a lot more fun.
