Is the "end of the world" near? Is life as we know it coming to an end? (User Poll by burdturgler)

Bobknight33: To Ban or Not To Ban (Controversy Talk Post)

scientologist trickery provokes research and thought

nibiyabi says...

This video is a fucking JOKE. I don't know where they found these "psychiatrists", but there are absolutely tests for certain (not all) mental disorders. If someone has an overactive substantia nigra, for instance, she is likely to be schizophrenic.

What the fuck do these people propose as the alternative? Oh, your kid doesn't really have autism. She doesn't need any special care or special treatment -- some men in a room just decided to invent autism! She'll be just fine.

Where the fuck do they get off pretending to be experts when they obviously know nothing of psychology/psychiatry? We don't "make up disorders out of thin air" -- there are certain symptom constellations that exhibit themselves again and again in the same patterns, and the same courses of treatment are effective in treating these people and giving them an improvement in the quality of their life. A "cure" is a very fucking tall order when you're talking about mental illness. The vast majority of patients who stick with their psychologist/psychiatrist see an improvement in the quality of their lives -- what more do you want, goddamnit?

10 Sluttiest/Outrageous Girls on Maury Povich

GoShogun says...

I used think that all these girls on Maury or Jerry were overacting and it was all fake, and to some degree, that's probably true. But then, I got a job working with complex mental health and high needs youth. I now work with girls EXACTLY like this on a daily basis.

I'll tell you how they get like this. Most of the time, the story goes:
Parents did crack and drank alcohol while pregnant with them and after being born, they were neglected, physically abused and sexually abused by their parents or others in the community. I've worked with girls who were cleaning up their father's puke cause he's wasted and then make breakfast for him, while drunk themselves...at the age of 11.

You'd think a good smackdown would work, and I've seen some girls mouth off cops and get...well, a smackdown. But even that and some time in prison doesn't change much. A little abuse goes a long way.

Is it really just me thinking the acting was quite terrible? Mind you I'm not a hater of this type of Japanese movies.

Well, I don't speak Japanese, so I'm probably missing out on a lot of the subtleties of the language; but I've watched a lot of their movies. Japanese appear to use overacting as a device. I can see what you're talking about it, but I've grown so accustomed to it that it doesn't ruin any of the realism for me; in fact, I sorta like the overacting. Similar to Shakespeare, if you're not diggin' on the language or the style, you're not going to get the maximum impact that the story has to offer. It just takes some acclimation.

Dramatic Ending w/ William Shatner on Six Million Dollar Man

Crispin Glover in 'River's Edge'

shuac says...

I'm surprised this got sifted as I was more than happy to let it rest peacefully in my PQ.

Actually, the "overacting or in-character" is one of those trick questions: the overacting is in character. I'm stepping on my movie reviewer soapbox for just a moment (hey, some guys know sports inside & out. I know movies.)

In the film, Glover's character, Layne, is your basic teenage slacker who goes to great lengths to help his "friend" John after he learns that John kills a fellow student. Layne's concern, while well-intended, is disingenuous and ultimately wasted. Keanu Reeves' character, Matt, points this out to Layne with "I know you don't really care this much." and that "you don't think things through."

And when Ione Skye's character mentions "Mission Impossible" Matt immediately starts humming the familiar theme. These kids have been raised to believe that if they act concerned and helpful the way they do on TV, then they may actually be concerned and helpful.

Credit goes less to Glover and more to the director, Tim Hunter, for crafting the performance of a kid whose motivation is to, basically, overact. Hunter's directing talents were last used on the AMC's Mad Men, another gem!

There's a good parallel story involving Matt's younger brother, Tim (played by Joshua Miller...now there's bad acting). Tim keeps picking on their younger sister by "killing" her favorite doll. In fact, the opening scene of the film shows him tossing the doll into the river (foreshadow alert) and in the background during this opening scene, we hear John shouting in jubilation at the river's edge, celebrating his own evil deed. Later, Tim destroys the doll's grave marker erected by the toddler, who protests to Keanu Reeves, teary-eyed, "He's killing her again!"

In a brash abandonment of symbolism, Dennis Hopper's pot-dealing character is named "Feck" for goodness sake, playing the only character who really cared about the girl he killed years ago. So basically, he's the only one not feckless. I always thought that was neat.

As you can imagine, I recommend this film as an excellent exception to the cinematic crap that the 80's produced.

Crispin Glover in 'River's Edge'

my15minutes says...

why not both?
that's why he's a great character actor.

overacting a little, is what makes a small part memorable. which helps make the movie memorable. and let's face it, some of that is not an act.
but you wouldn't want to see a whole movie, about most of the people he's played. which means he's a good lead for horror movies, and not much else. because you're not supposed to fully empathize with the protagonist, in a horror flick.
just enough to make it interesting.

Little girl deemed not cute enough to represent China

NordlichReiter says...

I used to sing in a bar band, my voice is not that good. But That little girl on stage was faking... you can see it.

She overacts her singing.

By the way if you think that china doesn't have a home field judge advantage then look at the scoring in gymnastics.

Who said it: Bush or Batman?

Upvote for the old guy who refused to answer and went on a rant.

I love the intelligent, patriotic quotes as opposed to the cartoony, overacted ones, and the fact that Batman's were the former.

Popcorn popped by 4 cellphones

Seems incredibly fake. Several others on YT have tried it and failed. One of them burned up the table cloth with the lighter they were using under the table.

Everyone who succeeds does the same overacting and most importantly, in all the successful ones they cut away after the kernels are placed on the table. They are probably setting something up during this cutaway.

Lots of people faking something doesn't make it real.

One of Mrs Spielberg wonderful overacting moments. Who would have thought she would one day bloom into the amazing actress that made SpaceCamp shine.

According to IMDB there were 120 actresses that didn't get this gig... And she met Steven Spielberg at the same time. This is living proof you can sleep your way to your goals!
