The Accidental Origin of the Hit Song ‘American Woman’

transmorpher says...

When they jammed it out on stage, I doubt it was as succinct as radio / record version. But a lot of great songs tend to be written(or should I say discovered) in this kind of instant form, all of a sudden something just clicks, and it just feels natural, it's almost a subconscious processes. Especially if you've been jamming with people for a while, then you're all on the same wavelength, or same drugs as I'm sure anyone from the 60s will tell you.

Many bands most popular songs start off as a joke, such as Nirvana's Smells Like Teens Spirit, or Primus' Shakehands with Beef. Which is why you get a lot of one hit wonders. They've had their light bulb moments, but nobody really knows how it happens, so it can't be reproduced. (not to say that Nirvana or Primus are one hit wonders by any means).

I see parallels with song writing and inventing or engineering. A lot of the greatest inventions were eureka moments while most of the others were just plain old hard work by dedicated engineers. But it's usually the eureka moments that change the course of history.

I have to say that this story sounds like complete bullshit. Writing a song is hard and it's almost always a slow, iterative process.

But damnit, everything I've read said this is exactly what happened.

Stupid talented people and their ability to write music without spending days agonising over every damn chord change....

Beck "Wah-Wah"

Sagemind says...

I still think of Beck as a One-hit-wonder.

Edit: I have his first album, but haven't been able to make it past the first song..., Cause I'm a loser baby, so why don't you kill me.

Why People REALLY Hate Nickleback

Payback says...

I've seen a fair share of crap make it to top spot, here on the Sift, so don't get all elitist about the maturity level in here. Bewbs, cats, and Louis CK all have a dubious percentage of votes in here.

...but honestly, as with most "internet communities" I'm here for the people. Places like Reddit and Youtube itself are just too full of vitriol and verbal diarrhea for my liking. Far too many saying far too little.

My dislike of this person's video has more to do with it's judgmental nature. I really dislike people who put down others over something so esoteric and subjective as music taste. The "Pop" in pop music is short for "Popular". Hating on something for no other real reason than a lot of people like it is douchebaggery at it's most stereotypical extreme.

There's only one Nickelback song I like, so I'm not a fanboi. I have to say though, the fact they are still selling records and and concert tickets kinda proves this guy wrong. They have "struck a chord" with quite a few people. Otherwise, they would have been a one-hit-wonder like the chick down the street from them, Carly Rae Jepsen.

Music doesn't have to be well written, or well performed to be popular, people just have to like it.

You visit Videosift (theoretically) because it sifts through the bullshit videos on the internet and gives you videos of merit. How is the aversion to heavily marketed BS such a seemingly unfamiliar concept to you?

All That Remains to be Said in Hip Hop Music Videos

Waaaay better than Cracklemore-That wanna-be gangster schtick is a one-hit-wonder fart in the wind compared this cat's video. Personally love his humping the static television and blowing his gf's clothes off with the pelvic thrust.

Adele masturbates - Ushi Hirosaki interview

artician says...

It's always a culture shock when you see the difference other cultures have toward ethnic sensitivities. That is crazy.

Adele needs a better manager or songwriter though. Chick was a one-hit wonder, and even though she has a decent voice I've only heard one song from her that didn't sound dull and generic.

Wow, that's so racist. In case you're wondering who the white lady in the wig is:

Kind of hard to care about the scripted masturbation slip when confronted with that.

Ted's Hat Is On Too Tight

Fastest Way to Tie a Tie EVER

dhdigital says...

Leaving a tie tied to loosen it, but then re-wear it tightens the knot. It stretches the fabric shrinks the knot size. It is not a very classy move. Buy a clip-on if you do not want to show some culture or pride. Also, you shouldn't wash or dry clean a tie. Ties are a one hit wonder.

I bartend. I have to display an illusion of a lie, but carry class during my steps of work.

Do it right or leave it at home.

My top five:
Ridley Scott - Alien, Blade Runner
Kubrick - 2001, Clockwork Orange, Dr Strangelove
Christopher Nolan - View video above
The Whedon - Firefly, Buffy (TV), the Avengers
Nicholas Meyer (Wrath of Khan, Undiscovered Country)
-Interesting tidbits
-I knew Nimoy Directed The Voyage Home, but didn't know he directed 3 Men and a Baby. - hmmph.
-I don't include Lucas, as he was a (3 movie) one hit wonder. Seriously, what else has he done thats's memorable?
-JJ Abrahms has WRITTEN and PRODUCED a ton of stuff I love, but he hasn't really directed anything.
-The Buffy episode "Hush" is the best, most original, scary, stand-alone story I have ever watched on television.

Whedon is amazing that goes without saying. You're right to not include Lucas, all you have to do is watch Indian Jones trilogy to see how he shouldn't direct and Spielberg should!

In Memoriam: Bands We Lost In 2011

charlatantric says...

Haven't logged in in years, but came to second The Music.

Don't let the one-hit wonder label fool you; they tear it up across all three albums they put out.

Can't recommend them enough; and sadly, I made an audible whimper when their name came up in the video.

In Memoriam: Bands We Lost In 2011

Barseps says...

I recognised a handful of them. One band I did notice was "The Music", (NOT the most inventive group name).....but anyhoooo, they were a 2004 one-hit-wonder band from Leeds here in England & to be fair to them, it was an awesome track.
