The sky is not the limit

newtboy says...

I've become torn about drone nature videos.

On the one hand, the views they can get are unique and stunning, the adrenaline pumping rollercoaster rides through impossible obstacle courses are heart pounding.
On the other, I'm all too aware of the efforts people make to have a single day in the peaceful majesty of nature, and having what sounds like a fleet of leaf blowers hovering overhead, whirring back and forth through the scene can ruin the experience completely.

I really believe there should be designated days/weeks when drones are allowed in public parks, reserves, preserves, wilderness areas, etc and they should be banned other times to make it fair for everyone.

I was a repeated victim of drone pollution in Iceland.

Woman Tries To Block access to Apartment

ChaosEngine says...

On one hand, he could have easily defused the situation by backing off, waiting a second and using his key fob.

But on the other hand, why should he? Maybe's he's an attention seeker, or maybe he's just sick of constant low-level racism and decided "fuck it, I'm not putting up with this bullshit today."

Let's be honest, would she have confronted him if he wasn't a black dude? Does she apply this rigorous security policy to everyone? Also, he has no obligation to tell her what apartment he lives in.

Sometime a building needs a waterfall

ChaosEngine says...

On the one hand, that is a tremendous waste of energy. Pumping that much water up that high would take a lot of power.

On the other hand, it is also undeniably cool.

Leftists Will Carry Out Targeted Killings Of Republicans

Drachen_Jager says...

I know those who listen to people like this have lost all sense of logic and capacity for independent thought, but if you listen closely he TELLS you he's bullshitting.

"They WILL carry out targeted killings of Republicans. IF that happens....."

On the one hand, he's saying he knows for absolute certain something WILL happen, but in the next breath he says "IF" not "When".

FOX's take on border separations

ChaosEngine says...

It's an interesting question.

The video segment itself is pretty awful. It has no redeeming qualities outside of serving as a warning how far the American right will go in defence of the indefensible.

So, on one hand, you could argue that bringing this to light is a good thing and the video should be upvoted.

On the other hand, it's not like this is news to anyone. "Fox news lies" is not exactly a revelation.

Ultimately the reason I downvoted this is because I feel like upvoting it would be giving the message implicit approval. How do you separate "I'm upvoting this because people need to know how bad the lies are" versus "I'm upvoting this because I approve of its content"?

I think its a shame these videos get downvoted so readily. Not quite the holocaust, but enough of a warning.

Trump Won't Win

ChaosEngine says...

The reason no-one believed Trump would win was that we were all suckered into believing that no-one would be dumb enough to vote for the asshole.

On one hand, we were right. In any sane election, Trump would have lost because he got TWO MILLION less votes.

On the other hand, we underestimated the stupidity of half the US electorate.

The dumbest people voted for the dumbest, most crooked candidate and he is now merrily fucking over the very same people who voted for him, while they lie back screaming "yeah, fuck me harder.... I can take it! more!!"

Sorry USA, but if you don't get your shit together, we'll just have to wait for your inevitable economic collapse, because there's no way you can maintain your position if this is the calibre of leader you intend to elect in future.

"Number 13" Sci-Fi Short Film - DUST Exclusive Premiere

jmd says...

Just..so..bad. Why is it so hard to write a good script? A story board? A director who has seen a movie or two? Lets CinimaSins this bitch;

1. opening shot is two shots at very wrong focal lengths, or that hole is actually very small.

2. One would think pre rendered special effects would not have issues with limited fill rates, but this comet clearly looks like its using a smoke trail from a video game on minimum graphic settings. You can count the number of particles on one hand.

3. For a desert nomad in a sand storm, she has an amazingly clean face, also, hoods that pull forward?

4. nomad is pointing at the clear as day impact landing of meteor as if it NEEDED to be pointed out.

5. a fairly large amount of simulated camera shake despite flames being so thin they don't smoke.

6. A horribly done transition shot where the boy is surrounded by smoke, fire, and lava, all except in the direction the camera is pointing.

7. Large tank army that no one notices until it passes them.

8. Physics, or lack of. the entire scene. Those 2 bypeds look like they were motioned captured by a two year old playing with his toys.

9. The expression on the boys face of surprise makes no sense for a robot of some sort who has crashed to the surface of a planet of which he had full intention of kicking ass in. The scowl afterwards makes it even more awkward.

10. what then proceeds is what can best be described as live gameplay from a random indie game from the steam store that utilizes a mostly black color pallet to hide the fact that nothing is texture mapped, low polygon models, and something that only slightly passes as a physics engine.

Post Tension Failure Florida Bridge Collapse Eng. Explained

Msemaurer says...

I'm a structural enginerd...I have years of prestressed concrete experience. I agree with this video. Post tension failure hit my brain as soon as I saw the video. Sudden loss of strength. PT concrete without PT = unreinforced concrete = sudden loss of strength = brittle failure. However, the PT cable could have been made of subpar materials. I once broke a #6 rebar with one hand in front of the Owner, inspector, and Contractor! Regardless, the PT rod was likely at yield when it was being tightened. As soon as it reached Fu...boom. What goes through the brains of the guys tightening a PT rod and notices the cable doesn't take load!

Liberal Redneck: NRA thinks more guns solve everything

newtboy says...

as·sault ri·fle. : noun-a rapid-fire, magazine-fed automatic rifle designed for infantry use.
Obviously it's not any gun used to fight. You act on one hand like you're a near expert, and on the other like you know nothing about the subject. Why must you feign being so obtuse and naive as a pretext to sesquipedalian and pedantic argument of your own creation?

Shotguns aren't rifles, and pump action isn't semi auto. No need for semi auto to hunt ducks.

Indiscriminately pumping animals, even nuisance animals full of lead isn't acceptable, even when you're just eradicating them and intentionally wasting the meat. That's why professionals trap them for humane disposal. You get more that way too. If you can't hunt humanely, leave it to those who can, please.

Home defense, I think short barrel pump action shotguns are the best choice...easier to wield in close quarters, and much easier to hit your target with. Also, the unmistakable sound of chambering a round is usually all it takes.

This brings up some interesting points.

What is an "assault rifle"?
.
.

You may not need a semi-auto for deer hunting, but hunting doesn't end with one animal. Going duck hunting - it's much easier with a semi-auto and 6 round versus a 2 round break action. Going on a pig hunt (for animal destruction). You'll want a semi-auto with a high capacity magazine.

What about home defense?

How to Figure Out the Day of the Week For Any Date Ever

Hulinsheimar Mýrdalsjökuls - Iceland

newtboy says...

I'm torn by videos like this.
On the one hand, they're gorgeous and expose many to the graduate of wild nature.
On the other hand, they totally ruin that experience for anyone who went through the expense and trouble to actually be in that natural wilderness.

Imagine you've spent thousands to travel to Iceland, and after days of travel you finally get to the pristine wild you were hoping to find....then HRRRRUUUMMMM....the next few hours are spent listening to the loud noise and scenery ruining of a large drone flitting about, almost following you through the wilderness, ruining the whole experience.

Exactly that happened to my wife and I in Iceland. The assholes went so far as to pass the "do not pass" signs and not only flew around, but set up and stood directly in front of the amazing waterfall we had hiked to see, for hours, even when asked to move.

I think there need to be severe restrictions on drone flying in natural parks and wilderness areas...like 4 days a year when it's allowed and no other times or something. Your beautiful video shouldn't trump the enjoyment of the others who took the trouble to get there, far from civilization.

Death Stranding new trailer 2018

On one hand I think Konami is about to seriously regret cutting ties with him, on the other I am thinking....WHAT THE ABSOLUTE FUCK IS THIS NIGHTMARISH LOOKING GAME?

Hand made Fried Eggs by Indian street food vendor

bobr3940 says...

Kind of surprised this made it to the Front page. His one handed egg cracking wasn’t that great, his egg flipping was meh, and taking them of the grill was average at best. About the only unique thing about this video was that he cooked about 20 eggs at the same time. If cooking a lot of eggs at once is all it takes to make it to the front page of videosift then I foresee my path to a future career in videos.

Stranger Aliens

transmorpher says...

On one hand it does perhaps lack imagination, but on the other it makes perfect sense that aliens we first find would be much like us since they'd be attracted by our radio waves, and to become a space traveling civilisation they'd likely have similar motivations and their brains/reasoning capabilities would have evolved in a similar way. Afterall the human brain seems to be hardwired to find other humans - we see faces in the clouds and random floor patterns etc.

That new movie Arrival (2016) (not the Charlie Sheen 90s one) did a great job of unique aliens.

I guess another reason why fiction makes aliens like us is so that it allows a story to be told without the story getting bogged down on the details (unless that is the focus of the story).
