Brick Laying Machine

Ryjkyj says...

>> ^Porksandwich:

I've seen a few brick layers work while doing asphalt work off to the side. I was under the impression that a good brick design needs a layer of sand underneath and sand spread in between and over top of it to fill in voids. Where the sand in between is from the top and bottom layers of sand being shifted around as they place the bricks. Which doesn't appear to be happening here. So are there steps left out, or is this a "cheap" brick job versus someone who takes time to work the sand by hand to make them stable and last longer? And the machine loading and dropping like that is going to chip and break bricks more often as well...and cutting to fit patterns, etc is still manual.
Need more footage to see if this is an actual advancement or one of those machines that is trying to justify it's existence.

I know with asphalt the machine actually lays a better job than people can do by hand in the same time frame, but there's a lot of prep work to be ready for the machine and an hour or two of post work monitoring and rolling/compacting it when needed. Less time investment on the post work on highway jobs because they use low temperature material and it cools off much faster, and they tend to lay a lot of layers which cools off quicker because they aren't as thick.

I've laid a bit of brick in my time and I'm not sure one way or another if it's really an advancement. But I think the most important thing would be the surface you laid on. If it was sand/mortar/dirt that was also laid and leveled by machine then you'd get the job done in much less time. Having a level surface or adjusting the bricks one at time is probably the hardest part. You could then do the top layer of sand the old fashioned way. Pouring it on and sweeping off the excess doesn't take much time at all. As for the cuts. This is probably a pre-set pattern where the bricks are made to fit at the factory and sent out in the appropriate amounts.

It certainly is cool.

Alien Swarm : New, kick ass free game from Valve

Alien Swarm : New, kick ass free game from Valve

Croccydile says...

I only buy games on Steam that are on sale. If I buy something new it is the good old fashioned way. Steam will probably be a better outlet for older games but I do not have good faith in new games on it yet. The prices are rarely compeditive for new games compared to just walking to a store and buying the damn thing and I get a physical copy of the game. I realize the whole point of Steam is to install games anywhere which is nice, but you still have to wait a few hours (or more) when downloading a 5-10GB game!

The sales are indeed nice, but I sometimes dislike the OMG 1 DAY SALE TOO LATE IF YOU MISSED IT LOL!!!1 I missed out on the EA racer package in July since I was on vacation

Now if only they gave the amount of attention they have been giving $20 Team Fortress 2 (ALOT) to stuff like $50 Left 4 Dead... Oh yeah and where is HL2 Ep. 3 This kind of lop-sided support is a bit odd but I cannot complain as they are still better than most game companies

The only real complaint I can see about Steam (and why I don't buy anything new as such a small investment into it) is that if you lose your account or it gets deactivated for whatever reason you lose ALL your games and there is NO recourse thanks to the EULA. Maybe Valve will be nice when Steam eventually falls under and allow you to unlock what you have... but what if someone buys out Valve

Star Wars Baby Announcement

spoco2 says...

Cool video... but what with the term 'aging couple'... are they yet another couple who have left having kids until REAL late and now have used IVF to get pregnant (seems likely because it's twins, which happens far more in IVF due to them implanting more than one embryo in the hope that any of them will take, and quite often more than one does)? Because if they are then I have to give a very muted 'wooo hooo'. IVF really should be used for those who have befalling of something terrible that stops them being able to naturally conceive, not just as an option for those who decided to keep putting off having kids until they are past the point that their bodies have decided they really should be having said babies.

Oh, I dunno, it's a slippery slope when you say things like that I guess. "Oh, you should be able to use technology to conceive because you're too old and your kids aren't going to have you around for very long etc. etc."... but then should a couple who genetics has determined shouldn't breed be allowed to either? Isn't that bypassing natural selection and making it more likely to create a 'damaged' offspring?

I just always feel funny about an affluent couple that's 'lived the high life' until they're 40 or more and THEN think 'hmm... my life feels a little empty, let's pop out some kids... whoops, looks like we left it too late.'

Hey... if they got pregnant the old fashioned way, and they're exaggerating about the whole 'aging couple' thing... then WOO HOO loudly for them... Kids will make your life equal parts hell and heaven, it's a great ride.

Stop Motion LEGO Star Wars short with my son (Blog Entry by youdiejoe)

Ha... funny, I haven't been in here to the blogs in ages, but you must have made this at almost the exact same time I made one with my kids: My little vid... actually this is pre dubbing with the kids voices and foley work... it's great fun, I did some with my dad the old fashioned way with a super 8 camera... so it was good to do it with my kids.

Although with the oldest being 6 they aren't quite up to doing the animation themselves yet.

EZ Cracker Egg Cracker

lucky760 says...

I love how retarded they make everyone look who tries to crack eggs the old fashioned way, as if it's common practice to just smash eggs onto your countertop. "Duhhh, hey George, watch me crack this egg."

Though this thing'd be nice to have, in all my cooking trials and tribulations I've never suffered any of the egg travesties they depict.

Yo I'm strictly about skills and dope lyrical coastin
Relying on talent, not marketing and promotion
If a dope lyrical flow is a must
You gots to go with a name you can quickly trust
I'm not sayin I'm number one, uhh I'm sorry, I lied
I'm number one, two, three, four and five
Stop wastin your money on marketing schemes
and pretty packages pushin dreams to the beams
A dope MC is a dope MC
With or witout a record deal, all can see
And that's who KRS be son
I'm not the run of mill, cause for the mill I don't run

Yes yes y'all, ya don't stop, KRS-One, rock on!
Yes yes y'all, ya don't stop, KRS-One, rock on!

Everybody on the mic in the party sound alike
until I recite, in black and white what's right
Let me take flight, my style is TIGHT AN GOOD
TIGHT AN GOOD, come is it TIGHT AN GOOD
Old styles I pass dat, slow down on fast rap
All in yo' ass crack, old King go Blast dat
Conjure to ask dat, hyper type of flashback
I publish like ASCAP lyrics for hand clap
No past rappin, youth trackin, talent lackin
MC's more worried about their financial backin
Steady packin a gat as if something's gonna happen
But it doesn't, they wind up shootin they cousin, they buggin
I appear everywhere and nowhere at once
I know my style is bumpin, even though some people front
It's the God of rap, you heard of it
The one that rhymes toward the sky givin airplanes mad turbulence
In rap tournaments, I reign permanent
Don't you think by now the number one spot I'm not concerned with it
The course of rap I'm turnin it
Back to that good old fashioned way of getting cash money by earning it
No bogus hocus pocus, I bring back to focus
Skills if you notice my position is lotus
Now quote this, MC's are just hopeless
Thinkin record sales make them the dopest

Examples, please, of theoretical gay marriage legislation that could be used to 'bludgeon' people in some unconstitutional way.

Bear in mind, these are people that have been bludgeoned for centuries the old-fashioned way by 'people who do not agree with the gay lifestyle.'

San Francisco to Introduce Marijuana Legalization Bill

acl123 says...

We have drug testing on the roads in Victoria, Australia. I believe they can test for marijuana with a saliva sample. This has only recently been introduced and has been under a little criticism (mostly from the media), but this is to be expected given it is still in its infancy.

I'm not sure how accurate it is, although I would guess the harder thing is to differentiate between a joint smoked an hour ago and a joint smoked the previous day, because marijuana remains in the blood for so long compared to alcohol.

As omnistegan says, the police can still operate the old fashioned way if necessary.
