Plastic Fork Removed From Sea Turtle's Nose

newtboy says...

This is the lucky 1/1000 that gets found and saved.
This is becoming the norm rather than the exception, although often it's a plastic bag, mistaken for their food source, jellyfish, that horrifically chokes or suffocates turtles to death.
The ocean is chock full of petroleum products like plastics, mostly in near microscopic pieces. If you eat seafood of any variety, so are you.

30 tons of trash clog shoreline in Dominican Republic

nanrod says...

This is Playa Montesinos in downtown Santo Domingo. On Google Earth there is a cruise ship docked less than a kilometer from this beach. Apparently this happens after heavy rains which ties in with studies that show that 90-95% of all the plastic in the oceans comes from 10 rivers, 2 in Africa and 8 in Asia with China being the worst offender. It seems that as third world economies improve, their taste for western throwaway culture increases without a corresponding increase in disposal and recycling infrastructure. I've read somewhere that even where they have landfills they're often located near rivers where rains and floods flush the landfill and allow it to accept more trash.

Any information on this? Is this the result of illegal ocean dumping, a trash barge sinking, or just normal garbage filled runoff at this spot?
It's hardly the only island paradise overrun with plastic. This is what people do, nearly everywhere we go. We need a plague, yesterday.

New Rule: Suckers | Real Time with Bill Maher

transmorpher says...

Oops,I must have missed the start of the video somehow lol.

But if that was his reasoning, he's still passing the buck. Why do we have to wait for the government to tell us on to throw plastic into the ocean or not to buy beef because it causes more emissions than all transport. For a person who constantly wants to keep government out of our lives, he seems to want them to also solve his problems.

Anyway I don't like the guy, but thanks for the follow up, I really did miss the message. Thx.

Um, you completely missed his point. Didn't you listen to him?

He's saying it doesn't matter what you do of what rules you use personally, it will make no difference if we don't have the proper leadership in government to make the right decisions in leadership is setting standards and solid decisions on how to clean our environment.

This video is about how, really, only government can effect the change needed to curb global warming.
Unfortunately the current US government is dismantling all those rulings and safe-gaurds, in the name of corporate money and greed over environment and the people affected by those decisions.

(His point was NOT that people trying to be healthy were dying young anyway. He was using them as examples to the fact that, no matter how hard you try on a personal level, it takes laws to make the bigger decisions to affect change)

What could go wrong?

Payback says...

Anyone who doesn't understand needs to go a sea beach.
It's impossible to not try. You can't do it.

I think it's a leftover genetic trait from when we emerged from the ocean. I picture a spiny finned fish wriggling out of the sea, seeing the kelp and exclaiming "WOOHOO! EAT SHIT HARRISON FORD!!!"

SssssssshhWHACK!!!

...and then sullenly limping back under the waves.

Hawaii volcano: Mount Kilauea volcano erupts - BBC News

StukaFox says...

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned in all the volcano coverage, but the area where the earthquakes are happening coincides with a geographic feature called "The Great Crack".

God help us if that part of the island is about to drop off into the ocean. The results would not be pretty, especially if the magma chamber were exposed to freezing cold, high pressure sea water.
