10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman

lucky760 says...

But seriously, it has to suck to feel like a piece of zebra meat walking through a lion's den all the time.

It's obviously a cultural thing that makes that behavior acceptable. It's human nature for men to have obscene thoughts about what looks to them like a hot piece of ass, but it's an unspoken agreement among "those people" that it's okay to actually act on those thoughts.

My wife has often been the target of strangers' attention, but I think neither she nor I would consider it harassment per se, though she has many times felt uncomfortable, ignored people, and tried to get away from them.

I know exactly what this is like. I can't walk to the supermarket without obscene girls whooping and hollering at me from all directions.

I tell them I ain't no hollaback boy.

Mad Max: Fury Road

AeroMechanical says...

It's true, and it ruined the film. I really thought it was a crappy movie with terrible acting until I finally saw the original version. If you didn't already know, it wasn't particularly obvious that it was dubbed because the dialog was largely the same.

Also, incidentally. Gibson was born in the US, moved to Australia when he was 13, and made Mad Max when he was 18. So, I dunno. He was almost American then, and he's almost obscenely American these days. Maybe it all evens out.

newtboy said:

Yes, but from what I've read, in part 1 they dubbed Mel's voice over with an American because they thought Americans wouldn't like/understand the Australian accent. Still, a young Mel clone would have been proper.

Calvary Trailer

Went to see it last night and I'm still mulling over what I think about it. It's undoubtedly a great movie, I'm just not sure that I like it.

I mean, the script is phenomenal, it's beautifully shot and Gleeson is amazing in it.

But there were a couple of things that just didn't sit right. Chris O'Dowd really can't do drama and Dylan Moran doing "Bernard Black becomes obscenely wealthy and turns into an arsehole" felt completely out of place. And I am absolutely mystified as to who told Aiden Gillen (the doctor) that accent was a good idea. It sounds like a parody.

In some ways, it felt like some kind of commentary on post-catholic Ireland. I haven't been home much in the last 10 years, but I don't remember that much open depravity in small town Ireland.

But still, I think its merits outweigh its faults, and the fact that I'm still thinking about it can only be a good thing.

Why Does 1% of History Have 99% of the Wealth?

ChaosEngine says...

The thing is, we should be (and we were) doing better.

That line from 1800 to now is not a straight line. It rises steadily up to about 1980, but then flattens out sharply. Over the last 30 years the average worker actually earns less than they would have over the previous 30 (adjusted for inflation).

The top end basically figured out they could demand a larger slice of the profits at the expense of the middle and lower classes. We've all seen the stats on ceo vs worker pay and the obscene differences (200+ times a workers salary). That money didn't just appear from nowhere.

Ricky Gervais' Guilty Pleasures

I struggled with The Office, mainly because I've worked for people very much like David Brent and couldn't see the funny side. But I've just started watching his latest series Derek and it's completely changed my view of him. It's amazingly well written. He manages to get The most immature dick jokes in there, racist or obscene jokes, physical comedy, clowning, subtle puns and wordplay but all in a plot that is one of the most touching and heartfelt I've seen for a long time, comedy or not.

Great british comedy, like Only Fools and Horses, or Open All Hours, are all about compassion and love. They're funny, but the characters are so well written you really care for them. The writers of Only Fools and Horses managed to write an episode about one of the main characters having a miscarriage. There were jokes throughout the hospital scenes but somehow they didn't stop it being truly tragic, they didn't trivialise it. It was devastating, but funny at the same time.

I'm not sure Derek is quite that level, but it's getting there. It's made me laugh and cry, sometimes at the same time. He's undoubtedly a very clever man and going up in my estimations all the time

Titanfall Gameplay video @ 1440p

VoodooV says...

That thing is running 4 Titans and 64GB of RAM?

damn.

Of course that's the other absurd end of the spectrum. As much as I love the PC platform for how it's so upgradable.

I will never understand the need to show off the capabilities of a rig that extreme if it's not even close to what what your typical person will experience.

The typical person will never have a titan...much less 4 of them. The typical person doesn't max out the memory capability of their motherboard unless it's really old.

and what's a setup like that cost? at least 5 grand?

I can't say too much though, I think I'm going to build an obscene rig for when Star Citizen comes out...but it still won't even touch this.

TDS: Minimum wage hike and the Pope denouncing Trickle Down

enoch says...

@Shepppard
ah...my young friend.
come over by the fire, your buddy enoch has some things to speak to you about.
are you comfy?
need a drink? beer? coffee?

then let us begin.

1.why do YOU care what another makes an hour?is it YOUR business?

but i understand the basic gist of your point:unskilled labor.

ok.thats a fair point.
but why is 15$ an hr too high?
what arbitrary scale are you comparing their hourly worth to?
walmart workers?

here is a facts that may give you some perspective:
a.if we take the minimum wage from 1978 and factor in inflation and worker productivity todays minimum should average 22$ an hour (yes...you read that right).
b.the workers in these unskilled jobs are in the high percentages in goverment subsidies.to the tune of 7 BILLION a year.so basically we ALL are subsidizing mcdonalds and walmart to pay their workers like shit.

so are you still against them getting a living wage? when you and i are subsidizing their income. the companies they work for get to pocket those profits, you and i get to help pay for their housing and food stamps.

walmart even helps ttheir employees sign up for food stamps! now isnt that adorable.

dont you think it a better idea that these companies pay their help at least enough where they dont need government susbizies? you know.like actually PAY them and not force us to?

2.if these corporations paid a minimum of 15$ an hr the projected hike in product prices will be......./drum roll.....
...........15 cents per item.........

3.how come it appears to be taboo to point to a CEO of a company who is making billions in bonuses while his/her workers are having to receive food stamps?
when did obscene gluttony and greed become something cool? even praiseworthy? while ridiculing those trying to survive and demanding a little bit of dignity as something to be chastised and cajoled for even having the impertinence to ask for a living wage.

the cognitive dissonance on display is on an epic scale.

who do YOU think you have more in common with?
the dude working at your local burger king?
or jamie dimon?

and dont even get me started on that condescending argument "get an education to get a better job".

i have been seeing many posts of late that reflect the very same flavor of yours @Shepppard and the one thing they all have in common is this judgemental value system that they just pulled out of their ass but in reality was given to them by the very people fucking them, and their children in the ass.

there will come a day when these people will realize they are slaves.
debt slaves.
wage slaves.
and while they were bickering the banksters and the corporate elite cleaned their clock.....
and they didnt notice until it was too late.

those elite fuckers.
they have a small club and you aint in it.
they dont like you.
they will never like you.
me?
im on your side man.

Xbox One Kinect Calls Foul on Bad Language

newtboy says...

Ahhh, but if we're going to use the 'would it happen in real life?' postulate, I would point out that he was commenting as if he were a commentator, not as a player, so why was one player/team penalized?
I don't know why that would be a decent reason for this kind of thing either, most games are NOT like real life in most ways, even this game has many elements in it that are completely unrealistic in order to make it a fun, playable game. If the Xbox1 is going for this kind of unrealistic realism across the board, I think I'll stick with my ps3. I play games for fun, not to allow the speech police in my home. (That said, I don't play online or use the microphone/speech feature, so this likely wouldn't ever happen to me).
I'm just guessing, but is this a feature of multiplayer meant to keep people from spouting obscenities in quasi-public arenas in order to limit customer exposure to unwanted cursing? That would actually be reasonable, especially if it can be turned off with the agreement of both players in an online game.

Lawdeedaw said:

It depends on the type of game. Would it happen in real life? Or no? Okay, end debate and grow the fuck up.

Guy films juvenile kestrel in the backyard when suddenly...

enoch says...

@carnivorous
let me first start by apologizing to @pumkinandstorm for derailing her thread.i always seem to do it to her posts.poor thing must hate me.

as for @carnivorous, i usual dont respond to any other posts after i rant (unless its shinyblurry) but i feel you are worth the time.i have read many of your comments and i sense you are a decent sort.

and though i am loath to do it i shall form my response in bullet form, more for expedience than laziness.(bullet responses are a lazy form of argument in my opinion).

1.my comment was not directed at you specifically, hence my generalizations and the use of the open-ended pronoun of "you".though you were certainly included in that use of "you".if i had issue with YOU i would have formed my comment in that manner addressing YOU..specifically.

my problem with some of the comments was not with a moral conflict but rather:presumption and ignorance.your commentary displayed both.

this is not an attack on you nor is it a reflection of how i feel/think/react to you.
it is just a statement based on your commentary.
i was hoping that my rant would possibly illuminate that fact for you (and others).

please reread your commentary in regards to @shang.
notice anything?
presumption.
you presumed to know and understand @shang 's intentions, even when he stated the opposite.
unenlightened.
or ignorant.you decide.because your whole premise is based on how YOU feel/think about a certain activity and you projected that morality onto @shang and found him lacking.
self-righteous.
because @shang participates in something you find abhorrent,it appears by your commentary this gave you the right to chastise and judge him, based on YOUR morality.

2.i do not think you are a bully.i think you were being presumptuous and self-righteous.read your commentary.

3.your rebuttal was no rebuttal at all but rather a conflation.the family you used as your example as "hunters"were not hunters.we have a name for people like that "sadistic psychopaths".appears they made it a family affair.
but to conflate those sick individuals and hunters is obscene and reveals an utter lack of understanding in regards to actual hunters.

4.i respect a man who stands up for what he believes in and i would never ask you to apologize but thats not what my commentary was addressing.

i was addressing the presumptions you were making about @shang based on pretty much nothing.
and while he was responding in a decent fashion you kept sniping at him from the bleachers.

its all trumpets and parades for standing up for what you believe in but how about a little bit of respect and appreciation for someone taking the time to respond to your questions?
especially in regards to something you obviously know next to nothing about?

you cant demand respect for your morals and beliefs and then turn around and deny anothers right for the very same thing.

i mean,think about it man.
you missed out on an opportunity to understand the mindset, motivations or passion for an activity that is alien to you.

your understanding has not moved an inch because of a pre-conceived notion based on what?
a childhood memory?
a few anecdotal experiences?

what a wasted opportunity.
would you have still disagreed?
yeah..most likely.
but at least you would have understood more.
and this practice is also known as empathy.

ah well...
i hope you read this is the context it was written.
with humanity and not an attack on you.

Woman thinks all postal workers are after her

Procrastinatron says...

As Freud put it, insanity is defined by an inability to see reality, and I have met very few people who could, in fact, see reality. In my experience, most people are too busy looking at the world through the murky lens of their particular flavour of religion or ideology to actually ever want to be bothered with reality, and should even the tiniest sliver of the nasty stuff make its way past their defenses, the ensuing emotional (over)reaction is sure to keep their attention diverted to less offensive matters.

Most people are such a garbled mess of emotions, cognitive laziness and stupidity (because stupidity never seems to go out of style) that they're always bordering on... well, if not insanity, then at the very least obscene absurdity.

Going to the extreme ends of the spectrum just makes it more obvious.
