Piece of Bread falling over

The science is in: Exercise isnt the best way to lose weight

transmorpher says...

Eat all of the cake you want, provided it's got little fat in it, it's made from wholemeal flour or oats, and most of the sweetness is from fruits/veges

Such as http://support.pcrm.org/site/MessageViewer?em_id=108396.0&dlv_id=122422

Even though the carrots and raisins will do a lot to suppress the insulin response from the added sugar, I'd still look at putting in less and less each time as it helps bring out the other flavours, and of course refined sugar has no nutritional value.

And I nearly forgot: BANANA NICECREAM! The more you eat the better.

Pig vs Cookie

newtboy says...

My 2 cents....

1) Don't EVER get your science just from the internet. ALWAYS verify anything you think you've learned with published peer reviewed science publications/articles.
Veganism does NOT cure or inoculate against cancer (which I'm assuming is what you mean by the #1 killer in the western world). If it did, that would be headline news and easy to prove, since vegans would all be cancer free, they're not. That's some serious BS right there. It may be HELPFUL against heart disease, I'll grant you that much. If that's what you meant, ignore the above.
If the point is eating healthier, excluding processed foods is exponentially better than excluding meats, and should be the first step people take when changing their diet, long before excluding meats all together.

2)So now Vegans are just like anti-choice people who think their choice should be the only choice for everyone!? I hate to tell you, but that position will make your movement lose, no question. Your position leads to only one logical conclusion, attempting to force people to stop eating meat. You don't change minds by force. I suggest you try a seriously different tact, or I fear you're methods may destroy your movement.

3)There is NO "better" alternative to meat. There may be alternatives, but they are not "better" nutritionally. The energy humans gain from eating meat is why we have the brain that allows you to take those positions, plants simply don't offer than dense nutritional value. True enough, evolution is barely still in effect for humans, but that's no reason to stop feeding your body/brain.

Personally, I can see no rational reason to stop eating meat except for moral or health reasons, and if you eat meat raised properly and morally, those moral reasons no longer exist. As we've discussed before, meat from small, local farms rather than large factory farms is often raised with love and care, so there's no abuse, only a scheduled end to life. I have no moral objection to that (and have a hard time seeing how others might have a reasonable objection to it) so I'll continue to eat meat, but I do make an effort to eat only morally raised meats. When the odd occasion happens when I can't choose the meats I prefer, I do feel somewhat guilty, but not enough to go pure vegetarian, certainly not vegan. (which reminds me, all dairy is not produced immorally either. Some smaller farms still exist that treat their cattle with care, but they are sadly disappearing as people usually only buy factory farmed dairy as well, it's far cheaper).
For those who eat so much meat that it's a health issue (yes, I do agree that it causes many health issues if you eat too much), I'm right there with you saying they should eat way less, or none, until they get their health under control.

The Natural Effect or How False Advertising Has Conned Us

I hate the business of GMO, mainly because of Evil Monopolistic Monsanto®, but are there any scientific studies that even claim these products are less safe for human consumption?

Of course, modifying an organism can have side effects such as decreasing nutritional value, but so can not rotating crops correctly or failure to maintain soil properly.

Science teacher got surprising results from McDonald's diet.

ghark says...

The whole issue about calories is a misdirect, there are dozens of other more important reasons why McD's is worse than trash. A couple of examples - the food is loaded with all manner of artificial ingredients, it's lacking in quality fiber, it's highly processed (low nutritional value), and the quality of the macro ingredients is very poor - i.e. the use of trans-fats as @RedSky points out, as well as the use of poor quality sugars (i.e. HFCS) to sweeten the dough.

That's not even to mention the exploitation of their workers, rainforest clearing to raise cattle, wasteful use of plastic packaging etc.

NASA's 3D Printer Makes Pizza

Sniper007 says...

... How the hell does this help feed 7 billion people? It is the exact OPPOSITE idea needed to sustain large growing families. I guarantee you, that printed food will be totally devoid of any real nutritional value. Best foods have always been and will always be a large assortment of raw veggies.

Still cool tech, don't get me wrong.

Bryan Fischer: Tax Athiests That Don't Attend Church

Quboid says...

>> ^chingalera:

@Quboid ~ Hell yeah!!?? Tax the unhealthy and those who have caused their health problems. Television, Monsanto, manufacturers of the shit, advertisers, etc. AND, a point of sale tax for any food that is not organic, kind, or kosher!!
Churches should have 10 per-cent of their tithes received as well, go straight into the healthcare system...which incidentally is cranking along in the black now that diabetes and heart disease are virtually non-existent AGAIN ~

Hell yeah? This seems kind of fascist to me. Taxing foods based on their nutritional value wouldn't be a bad thing, if largely unenforceable. Actually we have a form of that in the UK, items that are considered necessities aren't charged VAT (sort of like sales tax) but luxuries are charged 20% VAT, with "normal" foods being necessities and fancier foods and eating out counting as luxuries. It's not particularly effective, but I'd guess it's doing some good.

New drug kills fat cells

Psychologic says...

>> ^GenjiKilpatrick:

in no way is this good, i feel.

I disagree.

We've been in this stage of medicine where we flood the body and brain with a chemical in order to affect a very localized area in a particular way (think chemotherapy). It's effective but causes a lot of collateral problems.

Now we're moving into a stage where chemicals are delivered precisely where they are designed to be. Similar things are being done where smaller amounts of chemotherapy drugs are released only at tumor sites, preventing the horrible side effects of full-body poisoning.

As far as this specific drug, there may be negative effects from it but I can definitely see positive ones. Less abdominal fat is healthier and greatly reduces the risk of a multitude of disabilities. Blame people for being lazy perhaps, but less visceral fat is still healthier than more.

One place where I could see this as being harmful is people thinking "now I can eat nothing but junk food and not get fat". Still, I don't see it as a net loss. Lots of people keep their weight down by eating low-calorie crap with hardly any nutritional value already.

Vegetarians -- Mitchell and Webb

SO true. The double standard some vegetarians present is ridiculous. Also, veggies who wear leather are quite intriguing ethical conundrums, aren't they? This is one of my favourite of theirs.

Psh, like we all wear Cat sweaters and rock Peta bumper stickers.
I personally avoid dead animal flesh because i'm not a lion or vulture.
Don't you think it's strange we're the only animals that have to cook other animals before we eat them. (Or risk food poisoning, worms, death)
Also, I don't think the criticism is quite justified.
Vegetarians only eat plants. So why would one go purchase or have meat lying around just in case?
You guys are probably omnivorous. So you'd expect an omnivore to have a few vegatarian options about.
Likewise, if at a "Carnitarian's" house, is it appropriate to give them guff about not having any vegetables in the crisper drawer? And question why they have house plants?
I understand the joke, but if you put thought into it.. it doesn't quite make sense.

most omnivorous and meet eaters are susceptible to the same worms and problems with meat . but if u kill something fresh its normally fine , you don't actual have to cook Manny meats , Fish, Beef,Dear,Lamb, spring buck, maggots , lavee , so long as you get it fresh.

due to the way we kill animals and store them and genraly dont eat fresh fresh it dose make it safer to cook alot of meets but this also applies to vegetables and other non meet produce. I think Rice is actually one of the more common ways for people to get serous food poisoning Evan over meat.

I think in the case of most meats the more you cook it the more you actually lose from the meat where as with most vegetables light cooking increases there nutritional value as what is lost is replaced by the ablity for the stumach to better digest more of it.

Im just looking forward to the time we can grow meats so that we don't have to deprive creatures of life in order to eat something tasty and different from vegetables. Its also a shame that in most western cultures its frowned apon to eat larvii and bugs, when they make an excellent food source and also consume waste , would make far more sence than killing large wasteful and relitavly intelligent creatures like cows.

Well, even stinky dead fish have some nutritional value... even if it is accidental. =)

The Benefits of a Japanese Diet

westy says...

1) fish is meat

2) cooking vegetables dose not make it lose its nutriments and in some cases cooking vegetables enables the human body to derive more nutritional value from it.

3) if you only gain 5 years on average then a life of eating relay tasty shitty food is not really that bad considering that 80-85 is not likely to be the happiest time of of your life

although i think overall japs r gonna enjoy life more for been healthy and thers no doubt eating vegetables and fish is good for you.
