noticed jon didn't uncover the dirt on the exorbitant markup on novelty potatoes. a disney themed spud, w/o shipping, shouldn't top $30.

get steamed over this...want to gouge an eye out...it - pardon my french - fries my hide! dam potato scallopers. like anyone can just peel off a hand full of the hamiltons for a goofy looking tater.

Sigur Rös - Hopípolla + bloody nose

StukaFox says...

The first time I flew to Iceland on the aptly-named Iceland Air, the "entertainment" consisted of the entire catalog of Sigur Ros and Bjork. The seat-back screens in the cheap seats had a list of movies that an old UHF channel would have turned its nose up at, and an endless loop of four commercials for wonderful Iceland -- in Icelandic -- that you couldn't turn off. They also insisted in asking people to pay in isk for Icelandic food, which was both a novelty, an annoyance and a source of nausea all in one.
That said, it was better than Air France by a long shot.

How one little boat (and me) held up miles of London traffic

StukaFox says...

In Seattle, there's a shipping canal that cuts through the Ballard, Fremont and University districts, each spanned by a single drawbridge, any of which MUST be opened if ANY boat traffic requests it. There's a time between 4pm - 6pm where they won't open the bridge, but one minute after 6, if you're not across you just turn off your engine and watch every entitled prick in the PNW putt their boat down the canal. Bridge opens, 10 minutes pass, bridge closes again. All along the canal. Backing traffic up to the fucking moon and it takes about 15 minutes to clear. Which works out wonderfully because the bridge often has to open 10 minutes after it just closed. At first, it's a novelty to see the bridge open. Then it's meh. Then it's the bane of your fucking existence. You start to whimper and sweat when you hear the two-minute horn and the ding-ding-ding of the gates coming down. Then come sthe white-hot fury directed at anyone who has the gall to come down the canal at exactly 6:00:01 and block traffic for the next 47 years. Hate. Hate. HATE!!!

The NOAA ships, mega-yachts and ships going to the yards are kind cool, 'tho.

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE!!!!!!

How Marvel Actually Makes Movies Years Before Filming

Khufu says...

It's not the VFX that bore you, it's the design of the shots/action. You would feel the same way if the same busy, over-designed novelty shot was done with traditional special fx techniques. Just making the distinction because people often blame vfx for stuff that is really a design/filmmaker issue.

Tesla China - Shanghai Gigafactory production line

StukaFox says...

1. No -- unless they advance battery technology to either the point where you're getting 1,000+ miles on a single charge or can charge the entire battery in less than 2 minutes, electric is a novelty and hydrogen is the future.

2. Tesla is going to be eaten alive by the Chinese, Indians and Europeans.

3. TSLA? You mean the stock with a 1000+ P/E? BAAHAAHAHAHAAH!! At least with tulip bulbs, you got a pretty flower out of the deal.

Who thinks that EV will dominate with in 10 - 15 years?

Who thinks Tesla will be on top?

Who owns Tesla stock?

Netflix, Gwyneth Paltrow and Goop are Hurting Women

Sagemind says...

I love all this stuff. I think she's brilliant.
I don't ever use this stuff, don't get me wrong. But there are more people than you think that is into all this stuff. They don't care that it's Psudo. Sex, Natural and just frame of mind. It's not available on Goop, they will buy it somewhere else. So why not make a few bucks. It's entertainment. It''s a growing sub-culture.

I can't take most of it seriously as if it's scientific, but let people who want this stuff be, and live in their own bubbles . live and let live. I'll bet 85% of the people know very well what they are getting is just novelty, but they are having fun, and enjoying their best lives .

Emotional Wedding Haka

fuzzywuzzywasabear says...

That was pathetic. Women: not Haka. White people: not Haka. (Not that there are any full-blood Maori's left, but for fuck's sake at least look like one.) Haka now seems to be some kind of novelty dance that anyone can do whenever they please. It is supposed to be terrifying; you are filling your enemies with the fear that that are about to be slaughtered and eaten. Why the fuck would anyone do it at a wedding?

Coolest business card ever

ChaosEngine says...

That is insanely cool. I mean, there's no way in hell I'd ever plug any kind of USB thing into my machine, but from an aesthetic and novelty geek thing.... it's *quality

Djent 2018

moonsammy says...

It does appear to be more of a hilarious novelty than a serious instrument. There's clearly no way to fret on the lower (upper?) half of the strings without having your left hand in a completely bizarre position, or placing it in your lap.

Also, why the hell is one of the strings pitched higher than the string below it? At 47 - 49 seconds you can hear it, and it's labeled as a C# between F# and G#. I'm not imagining that, am I?

spawnflagger said:

so it's a regular electric guitar with a bunch of extra strings that are hardly ever touched?
I'm not an expert but I couldn't hear anything that couldn't be replicated with 1 or 2 effects pedals...

I'm an Albatraoz

FlowersInHisHair says...

I dunno... this is a great example of a novelty record that doesn't outstay its welcome

yea...DJ music videos need a little more work... alot more energy... and need to be a little bit longer then a commercial.

$100 Bass Guitar Vs. $10,000 Bass Guitar

Khufu says...

I feel the $100 bass is clearly a flatter simple sound... the difference from the $100 - $700 is quality of materials/manufacturing and does have a somewhat noticeable difference on feel/sound. But the jump from $700 - $10000 is based on subjective value (rarity/custom/novelty).

SPACE ODDITY - David Bowie cover - Puddles Pity Party

AeroMechanical says...

I like Puddles, but really he's a mediocre vocalist and the performance aspect, which is what he is most skilled at and what I liked, seems to be losing it's appeal. Maybe it's just the novelty wearing off.

Demonstrating an "Ancient" Indian Weapon

BigAlski says...

I doubt that Katar was a more than a novelty. You were stabbing as fast as possible and hoping you could disengage before the heavy weapon of your opponent came down.

Genital Jousting Game Trailer

hazmat22 says...

The publisher Devolver Digital has published a number of really great games and the reviews seem positive so far, but it will be interesting to see how large the hype gets and how long the novelty lasts before it is expended and the interest turns limp.

Japanese Zip Bags

transmorpher says...

Very cool, for the novelty factor alone. But practicality wise, I can't ever think of a time where I needed to make an empty bag slightly smaller.
