Honest Trailers: Mad Max: Fury Road

ChaosEngine says...

Honestly, I don't really give a damn about the blood. It simply doesn't matter for me.... if it's there, great, but I certainly didn't sit through the movie thinking "damn if only there was more blood".

And yeah, there was CGI that was cleverly hidden.... so what? That's the point of good CGI. But there was certainly plenty of practical effects.

Agree with your point about American puritanism... what is it with that country that it loses its shit every time they see a nipple.

As for a pale imitation of the original, the first Mad Max benefits greatly from nostalgia and conflating it with the far better Road Warrior movie. As a standalone movie, it's above average, but hardly a classic.

The spectacle of it was awesome, but a good modern action film still pales in comparison to a good 80's one. Were was the blood? Besides the good guys, so you'd feelz for them and the main bad guy so you'd be like 'fuck yea! DIE MOFO!' Besides those instances there was a lot of violence and gunplay but so little carnage. Guys being shot and flying 30 feet through the air without blood splatter or wound to be seen. This movie was so hyped for its practical fx but all I saw was a lot of CG that was cleverly hidden and violence without any actual violence in it. It had an R rating not because it was gory and violent but because some random extra flashed her tit for 5 seconds. Fucking american puritanism. Calling the plot thin is an understatement.. it was literally consisted of half a page of writing.

Over-all fun movie with some cool spectacle. But still pale imitation of the original.

Free the Nipple!

I'm all for the cause, but I'm a bit skeptical that freeing the nipple will really be striking that big a blow for women's equality. Regular public exposure would probably lead to some degree of normalization but I doubt it would eliminate objectification of women in general.
Many of the men they questioned seemed to grope for answers as to why boobs were so distracting, but I think it's not just about the boobs but the whole package as well. If I saw a topless woman walking down the street that I wasn't really attracted to then I probably wouldn't give her much more attention than if she were a man, whereas if she was attractive to me then I may have a harder time averting my eyes.

Hold the Coke with your Boobs Challenge

ChaosEngine says...

This is hilarious.

Not the challenge itself, that's fucking stupid.

No, it's pathetic attempts to cover up the nipples. Yes, you're holding a coke can with your breasts, but if you showed your nipples, well, that would just make you a tramp. But a bit of tape? Dignity preserved!

I love The Onion's movie reviews.

Yes, I haven't seen it, but this movie does remind me of my own coming of age story, just like I'm sure it does everyone else.

Contracts... Iron masks... Dungeons... Slaves... Nipple clamps... Blood stains... Ah, those innocent teenage years...

Free The Nipple - An Awesome Rant For Boobs

AeroMechanical says...

I'm definitely not seeing any actual legitimate censorship issue and no legitimate point or argument--and certainly no censorship "rule." There is no rule or law against showing nipples on the internet. The decision to blur the photograph was made entirely by this V Magazine at their own discretion for their own reasons.

Compared to many western countries, the United States is relatively light on censorship precisely because of the codification of the first amendment. There are very few circumstances in which the federal government uses criminal law to enforce censorship, and using civil law to do likewise (such as in cases of libel) is relatively hard. Naturally, the truth on the ground is always more complex, because of all of the ways you can sneak sort-of-censorship into local and state laws such school boards determining public school curriculums, shady contracts, and discriminatory public decency laws. That last, which is really more what this guy is arguing about in a ham-fisted way.

I certainly don't believe there should be different laws for men and for women. If a bare-chested man in public is acceptable, I believe a bare-chested woman should be just as acceptable. In this case, I'd go so far as to say I believe that should be federal law, but that can likewise backfire in ways I don't agree with (eg, I believe wether to allow concealed handguns should be a local decision), so I'm not quick to make blanket statements.

Certainly the US is socially and psychologically backward in many, many ways, but it's also better in that respect now on balance than it has ever been in the past.
