Excavator operator saves young deer stuck in mud

transmorpher says...

Even if the lamb has the best treatment in the world, to eat it, it has to be killed as an infant, it's only months old.

I'm not blaming anyone, I was just as oblivious as anyone else to all of this for most of my life, and that's why I like to point it out these days, and perhaps help someone just like the younger me to identify the inconsistencies in the thought (or lack of thought) process. It takes a lot of cognitive dissonance to see the beauty of a young deer and feel obligated to save her life one minute, and next minute eat something just as young and precious without even a single neuron firing about what had to happen to the lamb in order for it to end up on a plate.

People will stop for ducks crossing a round, and then go through a fried chicken drive through. People will spend 1/2 their lunch break admiring pictures of kittens, but eat a lamb or veal (and when you compare a lamb to a kitten they look very similar and just as cute).

If that younger me was reading this, I know I'd be getting angry and frustrated at this comment, ready to throw a barrage of counter arguments such as "lions eat animals". But that is only a good thing, that frustration, anger and annoyance is the logical side your brain fighting tradition and habit side. It's a good thing if it's causing you frustration, because it means you do have a logical side at least and even perhaps on a subconscious level the brain is trying to work out the inconsistencies

And of course sheep are very much victims of factory farming these day : http://www.animalsaustralia.org/media/press_releases.php?release=150

Actually Lamb would be a great choice because they aren't factory farmed so they most likely were treated well and were happy.

The True Science of Parallel Universes

mxxcon says...

How do you make decisions? Neurons firing in your brain.
How do neurons work? Electrical signals.
What are electrical signals? flying electrons
Quantum mechanics effects electrons.

I'm no physicist or theorist, but I've always had trouble accepting #3 (and it's many uses in sci-fi), where they say each decision is played out in another universe. But every decision we make is based on circumstance and our own behaviour. Nothing is truly random.

What would make you choose differently? The circumstance would have to be different to begin with, but that would mean you're already in an alternate universe. Where did this one come from?

I dunno, I just don't understand this theory, maybe I'm getting the principle wrong

TYT: Texas GOP tries to stop you from critical thinking

Sagemind says...

My faith in the American (republican) people from this point on will forever be tarnished beyond repair.
(last straw factor)

Those that are not Republicans, I sympathies with your malaise and lack of fight to expel this monolith of tyranny that strives to push the average man down and subjugate you for their own benefit. I urge you to rise up and fight that power that enslaves you, laughs at you and sucks you dry.

You are the only ones who can rise up against this virus of humanity that has taken hold. It's your rights, your country. If you want to be a patriot, then fight for your country. Fight from within and fight to cleanse your own system before looking outside your borders for a fight.

You owe it to yourselves - you own it to all of us.

Edit: Sorry to have ranted - the neurons fired and I just went with it.

Some Thoughts on the Ape Movie (Blog Entry by dag)

gorillaman says...

>> ^dag:
But to care about SF, it has to be about how it relates to human beings. In some sense we have to put ourselves in the shoes of the people who are experiencing the wonder. Otherwise it's dry and boring.
When I think about SF movies without good character, I think of Transformers. Style over substance.
Contact on the other hand had a great central character that let you feel the wonder of what she was experiencing through her eyes. That's vital.
Well there's my point. We have theory of mind, plus mirror neurons firing away - if children can see through the eyes of a doll, we ought to be able to put ourselves into even the most simply drawn character. That doesn't have to mean badly drawn, like Transformers.

Just saw Rise ten minutes ago. It's surprisingly good stuff; a fantastic successor to the original PotA. I have a particular weakness for this story because I deeply wish we could make smart animals. I want to hear their perspective. I'd love to have a conversation with someone as intelligent as me but who didn't share my exact evolutionary heritage and inbuilt biases. Imagine living on earth with a separate race of equals. I really think it'd be enlightening - and, okay, potentially problematic.

I was privileged to visit once and the feelings of peace and joy are so great that they are indescribable in human words.
"Science suggests it could be the result of a series of biological reactions that help the body cope." (1:42) Can you show me the studies that suggest this--No, there are none. That is an incorrect use of the word "science". And, how would it be possible to evolve these mechanisms to cope with dying? Being dead means you are out of the gene pool--forever. If these experiences are just random neurons firing the resulting feelings of joy and peace are pretty damn lucky--Does anyone think that we're THAT lucky: I don't. I don't use the words "god" or "heaven" to describe what happened to me; when people hear these words they think they know what they mean and interpret them according to their own ideas. I don't Know what happened, but I believe all life is connected and there is something after we die. I'm not trying to evangelize, or create a new religion. My experiences are completely personal and subjective--I could easily be wrong. I don't think so--I have zero fear of death now.
I would vote for an atheist for president (the right atheist that is).
Anyone who calls themselves an Atheist Minister is a huge douchebag.
I got a huge belly laugh out of the glossolalia, that alone makes this video worth watching.

Roddick Wins With "The Best Shot of my Life"

westy says...

Not really that impressive quite allot of tennis players could have done this the fact that this is considered exciting and how mental the crowd goes shows you how mundane tennis is as a spectator sport.

I think its grate playing tennis and its not a bad sport ( apart from the snooty rich twats that generally run allot of the stuff in the uk ( when there is no reason why it could not be a far more accessible sport )

I'm sure people get all worked up and involved when they watch it with all there mirror neurons firing off and the whole supporting one person over another will he win or lose motivation.

but objectively its pretty bland sport to watch and incredibly predictable in terms of macro play by play action I really don't understand why it has such a large following over other sports such as badminton Tidly winks or chess.

To compound the issue its Realy very rare in tennis that you get players that are entertaining to watch/ have a very original play stile , personly i dont like football but it does seem to produce or leave space for players to be far more creative.

Bah rant over ,

video of a REAL ghost NOT fake!

FlowersInHisHair says...

Mm. Problem is that your explanation, if you can call it that, is only slightly more likely to be true than ghosts are. The hypothesis that people who claim to see ghosts are hallucinating, delusional, mistaken, prone to pareidolia, or simply lying, is far more likely than either "ghost" or "eye resonance".

What that means is that neurons fire at a certain rate to transmit data, communicate, change state, whatever. The neruon paths fire in the tens of Hz or slower, so maybe the visual cortex or visual nerve cells have a certain frequency they fire at and if you in an environment with EM or visual stimuli that is at certain frequencies, it makes sense this could have impact on what you "see", much like modulating and to create FM communication. Though you might call it more of a pulse stream shift keying.

I read some shit a while back that said the reason we experience paranormal events in certain environs is because of resonance factors that resonate with the same frequency as our eyes thus creating peripheral visions.
Seem interesting as a theory.

That's not a theory. A theory has to contain an actual explanation of the cause of the phenomena. What you gave is pseudo-scientific mumbo jumbo.
Our eyes resonate? WTF does that even mean?

The Great Sifter Roast XII ~ NeuralNoise ~ (Parody Talk Post)

Ornthoron says...

When I first saw the name NeuralNoise, I was intrigued. What could this cryptic username mean? Was it referring to how the seemingly chaotic maelstrom of neurons firing in all directions gives rise to what we call thought? Or was it perhaps a commentary on the effects of today's information overflow on our psyche?

Alas, upon further inquiry we now find that the username is nothing more than a fratboy's flaunting of his favourite band and/or novel. You know the type; the one who is the only person in the world who Truly Understands these lyrical geniuses, and knows in his heart that everyone else are lesser human beings for not adoring his idols as much as he does. He feels that His Band is under-appreciated by the general public, but he secretly harbors a fear that they will someday actually become popular, since this would render him obsolete. After all, his mindless adulation is his only substitute for a lack of personality. Yeah, NeuralNoise is that guy. No wonder rasch "Dylan" 187 likes him.

This is symptomatic for the rest of NeuralNoise's sorry character. Oh, great, you managed to inseminate some woman. Now this is suddenly all your existence revolves around. You even have the audacity to blog about it. Well, congratulations. You have taken the essence of this narcissistic medium and turned it into a dark and frightening shadow of itself. Exploiting your daughter to feed your exaggerated sense of self-importance; I'm disgusted. Good luck living through your children for the rest of your life.

The shallow nature of NeuralNoise is also evident in his answers:

What is your favorite video on videosift?
Can´t remember anymore. But living in Brazil, I blame videosift on my addiction to Maher, Colbert and Stewart bits
Favorite comment on videosift?
confess you are asking these questions only to make fun of my alzheimer-ridden brain

Yeah right, blame your memory. Can it be so hard to look through the top-rated comments on the site and pick one of them? I rather think you only care about the videos and comments you yourself have posted, and your faux modesty prevents you from mentioning them. VideoSift is simply your arena for assertiveness. Let's hope this roast can rectify some of that.

The Human Eye - 10 Things You Didn't Know

joedirt says...

LOL 36000 bits of information.

What is a "bit". Your optic system is so parallel, some parts are registering movement, some patterns, some face recognition, some looking for colors, some looking only at which "pixels" have changed.

Anyone know how many fibers are in the optic nerve bundle? Yes neurons fire slowly, but the raw data processed is staggering.

The simple example is watching TV. Or certainly anyone will agree you probably see as much as a webcam and even if you closed your eyes and only open them once a second, certainly you are far exceeding some bullshit 36000 bits. That's even treating things as "pixels" with "bits" of color.

In fact you see in analog colors mixing the receptors, so you can see an insane number of "bits" of resolution of color and that isn't even covering perception, who knows what your brain ignores or considers close enough.

Zombie Snake Head - it is still alive!

ReverendTed says...

>> ^spoco2:
where the hell did it get the energy to do it was my thought?

Energy is produced and stored by the individual cells of an organism, so cellular processes can continue until the individual cells expend their energy stores.

>> ^Lordoderus:
Maybe snakes just have a weird nervous system that keeps just sending signals for a minute or two.

This probably happens because the snake's nervous system is not weird, with a brain located in the skull. Again, as long as the individual cells have some remaining energy stores, they will continue to function. The rest of this is speculation on my part, but it's possible all the snake "knows" is that his whole body just went numb and he's getting increasingly groggy. Tail whipping could be a result of now-uninhibited spinal neurons firing more-or-less randomly.
