CeramicSpeed 99% Efficient Drive Shaft // Chain Free Bike

AeroMechanical says...

Yeah, neat idea, but I'm not seeing the applications outside of (maybe) high end competitive racing where a few percent efficiency (that isn't offset by losses elsewhere, like weight) is worth it. In that case the aluminum would be okay because you'd just replace it after every event. For the likes of e-bikes and such, on the other hand, if you're going to use a shaft drive, why not just put the transmission entirely on the drive sprocket (maybe with a CVT like Netwboy suggets). This thing, as a whole, strikes me as too much out-of-the-box engineering without actually leaving the box. Of course, all that said, I'm always in favor of trying new engineering ideas so I approve.

We've all seen footage of waterfalls to nowhere when strong winds blow a waterfall up into the sky, this is the other side of that coin, a waterfall FROM nowhere. Neat.

Lando Gives Tour Of Millennium Falcon

RFlagg says...

My question is how does the MF get so dirty between this movie and Star Wars. The movie is set somewhere between 11 and 14 years before Star Wars: A New Hope. 10 years doesn't seem nearly long enough for the level of grime. Even if Solo doesn't keep as good care of it as Lando did, which is fitting of both characters... or Lando has lots of fake stuff to keep it looking clean and neat, as it is apparently close to 60 years old by the time of New Hope (not sure if that is still canon though), and that stuff is removed or falls off, revealing the ship's true nature, and this might fit with Lando's character, trying to make himself seem cleaner and better than what he was. Perhaps part of his con.

Would be funny if during a mid/after credit scene we see the fake clean stuff start falling off, and Solo commenting about how Lando was a dirty cheat.

EDIT: Seems there is a possible explanation and possible spoilers, Han wanted the ship to blend in so let it get dirty or made it look dirty...

Kayaking waterfalls in 360 video with Rafa Ortiz.

newtboy says...

Me too. When I posted it, the kindle wasn't recognizing it as 360, so it stretched and warped the whole image in an awesome, trippy way. I rewatched on my pc, and it wasn't nearly as good, and really hard to see what's happening. Disappointing.
They had a short version on rightthisminute.com without 360 that was neat, but they jabber over it annoyingly.

Actually for me the only way to see it properly imo is to pause at every edit to first find the proper angle. Then to follow the action. If you don't pause it you miss the action generally.

Golden tortoise beetle transforming from gold to red

Payback says...

Hmm, The Great Wikker-paedia claims this is actually a colour change and not just a trick of the light or viewing angle. Neat.

It also says the bug is upset when it's not gold, so not so neat as well, I guess.

Aliens Movie - "Get Away from her, you bitch!"

CrushBug says...

Aliens was one of the first movies I watched on Laser Disc and the first time I saw a "director's cut" of a movie. My cousin and I were watching along and suddenly there was a scene with sentry guns. We were like, "WTF?" We had seen Aliens twice in the theater and rented it on VHS a few more, and had never seen this scene before.

That was when I learned that the version of the movie released to tape and on other pay to view formats, was at the purview of studios, but Laser Discs weren't covered in their contracts, thus affording directors the ability to add deleted scenes that they wanted in the original theatrical release.

That was when we started renting other Laser Discs and started seeing longer movies, such as The Abyss with the original, longer ending, Terminator 2, with more scenes of the T-1000 breaking down, and some others. Hmmm, I just noticed that the last 2 I listed, and Aliens, were all James Cameron movies. Neat.

Star Citizen Squadron 42 gameplay

AeroMechanical says...

Eh, I dunno. Neat overall, and since it's the opening sequence it can probably be forgiven to an extent, but there was too much self-indulgent tech wanking going on IMO. I also worry that there is a little too much first person shooter going on in my space shooter. While it was very cool in the previous Wing Commander games that you could go to different areas of the ship and talk to the crew between missions, all you had to do to get around was click on doors and people. Actually having to walk your character around a big ship to activate the cut scenes is going to get old unless they find creative ways to keep it fresh. We will see. I just worry there is a lack of focus on core gameplay in favor of putting features in there just because they can. A lack of a focused vision and direction seems like it's the achilles heal of the whole Star Citizen project.
