Kilian Bron Best Of 2021 POV Mountainbike Lines
I wonder if they make test runs before doing the high speed runs. This is worse than Free Soloing a mountain. Not only would you fall to your death but you would also wreck a perfectly good and expensive bike! Not to mention the camera.
Edit: Don't know how they can ride like this with such big balls on such a small bike
Oliver Stones thoughts on why Putin invaded Ukraine
I'm suffering from serious confirmation bias on this because it agrees with a lot of what I heard around the 2014 revolution and since.
I was in Russia when they invaded Georgia in 2008. Specifically, I was staying with family in Ossetia, which is a mountain state that was split between Russia (North Ossetia) and Georgia (South Ossetia). Russia invaded because Georgia was attacking a Georgian town in South Ossetia. On the day of the invasion I was working in the mountains collecting water samples, and got a very close view of what was happening, got local confirmation of what was being reported, got to talk to refugees, etc.
Without going into it too much, when I got back to Ireland and saw what was being said and how it was being framed it was absolutely laughable and so obviously wrong. Some were worse than others - Sky News in the UK and Fox News being the worst offenders - but no major news media that I saw was giving the side of the story that I saw.
Also, when the UN report on what happened came out several years later it completely matched with my take on what happened.
The point of all this is that when the invasion happened earlier this year I knew there was no way I'd have the time or expertise to find out what's going on, even though I have friends and family in Ireland, Russia, and Ukraine. All sides are pushing their narrative hard. All sides are lying to us and manipulating us to the best of their ability. Depending on where you live you'll hear one side louder than the other, and the people around you will tend towards that narrative.
Personally I believe both sides have committed atrocities. I don't know who's been worse. I've seen both sides, including journalists, manipulating footage to support their narrative.
My only take on this is that invading a sovereign country is absolutely wrong except in extreme circumstances where every practical diplomatic means has been exhausted.
To come back to this video, my instinct was to promote it because it does seem to be a well informed take on the context of what's happening, but I've been hesitant because of my confirmation bias and because it muddies the message of "war is very very very bad".
Feck it, though. *promote

The $5BN Mega Resort in the Desert
if the only way to get there is by jet, how are the resorts going to carbon-offset all of that jet fuel used to get there?
The carved-into-rock hotel might make a good James Bond set, but not sure how many rich Saudis will enjoy climbing a mountain to get to their room (which will likely cost thousands $$ per night)
Jordan Klepper Takes On Canadian Truckers | The Daily Show
Economic disruption of the blockades was similar to the Mohawk blockade of railways about 2 years ago:
https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-ottawa-rejects-police-intervention-to-put-an-end-to-blockades/
Similarly, mass lay offs and multi-billions of dollars of goods stuck sitting around waiting to get to the industries needing them.
Since at least 2012 the attempted expansion of an existing pipeline(Trans Mountain) was targeted continuously by blockades. Opposition and resulting delays leading to cost overruns so large that company ultimately halted the multi-billion dollar project.
In terms of dollars being lost, the convoy protest wasn't special. More over, the blockade of the border in Ontario that was causing the real economic damage was dismantled and removed before the 'emergency measures' were enacted. Which is to state, the emergency measures were primarily intended to clear out downtown Ottawa. In downtown Ottawa though, the damages were at minimum as localized as any of the lumber or pipeline blockades mentioned.
Prime Minister Trudeau couldn't be more unequivocal when he was expressing his support for the farmer protests in India and the Floyd protests in the US. Clip if you'd like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9EaSF6Y0eE
The protests in India absolutely did immensely more harm to India's economy than the convoy here did in Canada. The protests in support of Floyd were again unequivocally more violent than the convoy in Canada.
There really is no basis by which to point to the convoy's actions and find them in any way unique or distinct from multiple other protests within Canada, or ones abroad that have been either given more latitude, or outright embraced and supported.
The distinction as even you can't resist going after, is that their beliefs they are protesting for are stupid and wrong, so no right to protest for them. That isn't how the right to protest within a democracy should be allowed to work.
I also have to point out the 'ethical' argument isn't as cut and dry as you want to make it out either.
-Pipelines bad so blockading is good ignores the fact the same oil gets pumped regardless, it just gets loaded into trucks that burn even more oil to haul it and have a fair greater risk of accidents and spills.
-Defending the rights and lands of Aboriginal peoples(like at Coastal Gas Link site violently attacked with millions in damages while the convoy was being vilified for 'incitement') is anything but obvious. The Wet'suwet'en hereditary leaders made claim to parts of the pipeline route and demanded it be shut down. However, the same Wet'suwet'en people's multiple elected Band Councils signed on with their wishes to proceed with the project. In fact, ALL elected representatives of ALL the Bands with land along the route had ALL signed onto the project and wanting it to proceed. It is in no way obvious that ignoring the will of those other bands to favour the conflicting claims of the hereditary leaders is clearly the most respectful of the people's wishes.
Link Sar: The Last Great Unclimbed Mountain
If it wasn't for gravity I'd love to climb a mountain.

No easy task attempting to climb the last great unclimbed mountain. Everest climbers are but little children compared to what these guys try and do. *promote
Americans Tell NBC, “Blown Away” By Bidenflation,
There are 2 things.
Inflation.
Biden.
Correlation is not causation.
There are also only two things that can safely be done to combat inflation - raise interest rates (not Bidens job), and actually govern well, make sure public spending is going to the right places instead of fuelling the spiral. That is difficult to evaluate from a distance and at this time, but Biden still has a chance there. Unfortunately the results will only come in over a period of years if not decades. The good thing is that Biden is less ideologically bound than Trump. Trump just lowered taxes for rich people, that was his only economic plan.
Implying current inflation is Bidens fault is like blaming covid on Trump. Its the covid response that can be pinned on Trump based on numbers we have now, after the fact.
How Bidens administration does when challenged will be evaluated in a couple of years time. I am curious why the fed is reluctant to raise the rate at the moment.
Just dont blame the mountain rescuers for the avalanche.
Caught in the middle of a rock fall
Note to self: in case of rockfall play dead and it should wander off down the mountain and leave you alone, maybe after a few taps to check you out.
Second note to self: stay away from the corridor of death, no matter how much fun it sounds.
Casey Juniors Coming Down The Track
We have a steam train through the redwoods near us called the Skunk Train, an old logging rail that’s now for tourists. It’s a nice day trip into the woods between Ft Bragg and Willits, sometimes with costumed performances.
There’s another awesome one just inland from Santa Cruz with a redwood loop track in the mountains and a trip from the woods to the boardwalk (and back) on offer.
The Durango to Silverton (Colorado) steam train was another memorable trip, I went around 1980.
All gorgeous and fun rides. If you have the chance, ride a steam train.

The Alpinist Trailer
I ran across this on Netflix, and was amazed to find out there’s a climber the likes of Dan Osman and Alex Honnold that no one has ever heard of, who solo climbs the most difficult peaks in the world, often free climbing….all at first sight (having never seen the mountain in person). Going to climb the most difficult peak in Patagonia…climbing alone…and to add some difficulty he went mid winter when no sane person or group even considers going there.
Some people burn their candle at both ends…Marc-André burns his candle all at once, but never attracted attention…until now.
I highly suggest this movie if you like climbing, exploring, extreme sports, or just people being amazing with zero interest in fame.

Terry Pratchett on Why we need to believe in things...
Quick! What did you pick?
I picked to not climb mountains without ropes.
You have to believe in something to have a goal in life but you need to pick well.
