Hayes: NRA "Good Guy With A Gun" Theory Failed In Real Time

newtboy says...

Hard to find complete data on that timeframe….

There have actually been 212 so far just 5 months into this year alone with 251 deaths…if you extrapolate from this year’s rates, that’s 6000 dead in the last decade from mass shootings…but I think it’s less because mass shootings are on the rise since 2016.

https://www.gunviolencearchive.org/reports/mass-shooting?page=8

And here’s a list of over 10 years narrowed to incidents of 4 or more deaths that adds up to 601 in the last decade…so extremely conservatively at least double that if you account for the vast majority of mass shootings that end with <4 deaths, likely triple or more.

No matter how you count, it’s more than Chicago over one year (including police shootings? Suicides?)
Apples to oranges anyway.

Wonder why you chose Chicago….hmmmmm….why could it be?….

St. Louis, MO (69.4 murders per 100000 residents)
Baltimore, MD (51.1)
Las Vegas, NV (31.4)
Kansas City, MO (31.2)
Memphis, TN (27.1)
Chicago, IL (24)

Is There a Russian Coup Underway in America?

Here's a few articles on today's report from the nsa, doj, cia, and director of national intelligence directly tying Putin and the Russians to the hacks, but sadly I can't find the report itself.....

...no smoking gun shown publicly yet, but by using the intelligence term "high confidence" they are certainly indicating they have one, or more than one.

The Shocking Way Private Prisons Make Money

RedSky says...

It is incredibly disturbing how it seems like you need dress up this morally reprehensible issue with glitzy production values and comedy to even make people aware of what's going on.

If you're interested in reading a long article, I would recommend the following Mother Jones report on an investigative reporter who took a job as a private prison security guard:

Black Man Vs. White Man Carrying AR-15 Legally

Mordhaus says...

While 99% is obviously a bit high, I did a quick search and found some data. Out of 62 mass shootings between 1982 and 2012, mass being more than 4 victims per incident, 11 shooters were black. In the other cases, 45 shooters were white males, 1 was a white female, and the rest were asian or latino.

So 18 percent of the mass shootings during that period were done by blacks. A whopping 74 percent were white.

You can find the list here: http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2012/12/mass-shootings-mother-jones-full-data

I've looked at the numbers. Here's a better correlation: http://www.motherjones.com/environment/2013/01/lead-crime-link-gasoline

The studies have been done ad nauseum. They don't show any reliable (i.e. replicable) impact. IMO the data suggests it's better to attack the root causes of violence and criminal activity (e.g. poverty, parenting, education, mental health) than it is to wage a campaign of prohibition.

How do you know that if you haven't done a study on it? We haven't tried a lot of things in the United States, yet everyone says it won't work.

I particularly love the sarcastic twats that say "We should ban crime and then we'd be safe." Really moron? Really? Because that makes any sort of sense. People are stupid and they need their guns taken away. If they prove they're responsible and smart they can have their guns back.

Actual Gun/Violent Crime Statistics - (U.S.A. vs U.K.)

Actual Gun/Violent Crime Statistics - (U.S.A. vs U.K.)

KnivesOut says...

The problem (as I see it) is that we're conflating every-day street crime (which is statistically more rare than it used to be) with horrific gun rampages (which are statistically more common than it used to be, and obviously more rare than every-day street crimes.) They're completely different animals. Choggie would have us believe that baseball bats are just as dangerous as AR15s. Certainly, statistically, that is true when we're discussing average crime-rates. However, I've never heard of someone bludgeoning a classroom full of preschoolers with a louisville slugger.

As Americans, we have to decide: are we OK with horrific gun rampages a few times every year? Is your right to own a military sidearm or rifle worth the occasional shooting spree? Maybe it is. Maybe that's the price of freedom.

Certainly, absolutely we need to address street crime and the factors that contribute to it. However, its obvious from these statistics that WE ARE. The crime rate has gone down.

And yet the shooting spree rate has gone up.

>> ^shinyblurry:

Not that I am a huge fan of those who horde wealth, but its just a bare fact that the top 10 percent pay 70 percent of all of the income tax in this country..the top 1 percent pays 40 percent of that. The bottom 50 percent pays all of 3 percent. So you really can't say they aren't paying their fair share.
