Bill Maher - New Rule: Bible Trumpers

JustSaying says...

Look man, I always liked you. I usually disagree with you and I think you're kinda crazy. However, I admire your faith, your conviction. I'm a cynic because I'm a disappointed idealist, so you are a bit of my mirror image. But...
Dude, you still live on Planet Earth. You still partake in what I call 'the real world'. We both know The Donald doesn't even give a shit about god and we both should know he's not gonna improve this mortal coil.

I think many Christians are holding their nose and voting for Trump because he is against abortion and will appoint conservative supreme court justices. There has been a strange kind of quasi-reality at the intersection of politics and faith, where the biblical worldview is kind of thrown out of the window. There are scriptures which warn us about these kinds of situations, and why America is in this position in the first place.

I hate politics, it is nasty and ugly and I don't think Christians should have much to do with it. God is our government and our faith is in Jesus Christ to bring redemption to the nation. As people turn to God we will start to see real and lasting change, and not before then.

Taking Personal Responsibility for Your Health

dannym3141 says...

A report that places chicken nuggets, turkey slices and bacon in the same category as cigarettes and asbestos is NOT equivalent to saying that quitting meat is the disease and mortality equivalent of quitting smoking.

That is patently absurd, and demonstrates what happens when someone tries to apply the scientific conclusion of a study to ...everything else. Scientific studies have a particular scope. They should state clearly within the study the limits of what the information can tell us.

1. How much of those meat products must you eat vs. how many cigarettes do you have to smoke? If i quit having one slice of bacon a week, I will not be healthier than if i quit smoking 10 a day.
2. The meat products you refer to make up only a small fraction of the meat based produce that is available. You might as well say "krokodil is bad for you, so stop taking your insulin."

I expect you to admit that the bit from the comment quote (put in bold) is wrong.

But the WHO report does in fact put chicken nuggets, turkey slices, and bacon into the same category(Group 1 carcinogens) as cigarettes and asbestos, because they are processed meats.

He's just saying what the report says, so I don't understand how that can be exaggeration.

"plant based diets (quitting meat) is the equivalent of quitting smoking".
In terms of disease and mortality that is completely accurate.

"plant based diets (quitting meat) is the equivalent of quitting smoking".....Pretty clear to me....so does this article he produced..."The World Health Organization recently published a report that puts chicken nuggets, deli turkey slices, bacon and other processed meats in the same category as cigarettes and asbestos: known carcinogens"
http://nutritionfacts.org/video/how-much-cancer-does-lunch-meat-cause/

Except the report really only said they MAY be dangerous carcinogens (edit: and that may be 100% due to the processing they receive, not the meat)...so sorry, no exaggeration on my part, it's on his part.

Need Surgery? Make Sure Your Surgeon is a Specialist

nock says...

Depends on the surgery. You don't need a specialist to do your acute appendectomy or cholecystectomy, but you DO need a specialist to do your knee replacement or ICA aneurysm clipping.

Also, I assume the risk reductions presented are relative - e.g. if mortality from a non-specialist surgeon procedure is 5% and a specialist surgeon mortality has a 4% risk, the relative risk reduction is 20% (absolute risk reduction is only 1%), which sounds really high and may be statistically significant, but in the real-world does not matter all that much. This would be called statistically significant, but likely not clinically significant.

Assassin's Creed Trailer

Mordhaus says...

Let's be realistic, there isn't a single video game movie that worked. Some made profits simply because of their name or because they booked a star with a built in fanbase (Angelina Jolie, Jake Gyllenhaal, Milla Jovovich), but the movies themselves sucked. Even Mortal Kombat was only good because it was soooo bad. I hesitate to even mention Street Fighter, Doom or Hitman 47. Street Fighter basically killed Van Damme's career, well that and a ton of coke.

Sadly, studios will keep making them because they can eke out a profit off the fanbase at least once or they will waste enough money that they can write it off their yearly profits.

I get that the view is great, but...

Insane Driver Can't Pass Bicycles And Goes Mental

Khufu says...

The thing about this is that they are going down a hill and travelling between 40-60 kph on a 1 lane road with no shoulder. The cars behind should have no expectation that they should do anything other than they did because to 'invite' a car to pass in a situation like that is to put yourself in mortal danger. as you'd have no idea what will happen once that car is next to you. It's much safer to ride in a group for this very reason, and the whole group should be treated as one vehicle. The cars should do exactly as this girl did and hold back until she could pass safely in the other lane. Just without all the rage;) If a slow moving vehicle like a tractor was driving down the highway, it would be the same deal.

New Red Ranger VS Ex-Red Ranger Deker: The Ultimate Duel

poolcleaner says...

Red Rangers, I understand your perspective and I appreciate your abilities to fight, but I do not condone violence committed by one mortal against another. It is the duty of an immortal to inflict pain and misery upon mankind, otherwise where's the job security in demigodhood these days?

The Last Audio Cassette Factory

VoodooV says...

Why?

even CD/DVD are going the way of the dodo.

I suspect when that guy shuffles off this mortal coil, so will the business. Either that when the last few people who even have a cassette player shuffle off cuz there will be nothing to play them on.

Yeah sure nostalgia has its place, but it really is just the human mind trying to fight inevitable change. So this really is just generational. Don't see anyone having nostalgia for using sticks as tools.

I mean I sorta get it. When Steam first came out I was vehemently against it. I "needed" that physical CD.

Well...I got over it. Steam rocks and digital is the way to go. The jury is in.
