Prospect - The Best Low Budget SciFi Shortfilm I've Seen

artician says...

I have a lot of things I think would be better, but I don't know if you mean wholly different ideas with the same setting, or things I would do different with this, or what. My criticism was mainly that elements didn't line up with each other to support the universe they created, and most of all the acting was so stilted.
If you want me to be specific about this:
They lay on that danger is around every corner, but seem to separate from one another regularly despite literally stating not to at least once.
Their attitudes and the way they move and behave in the environment are more like a couple people on vacation, and show nothing to support that this environment could kill them at any second.
I couldn't tell if the daughter was estranged from her father, because there seem to be this "get to know you" scene in the tent, but it could have easily been terrible acting. If it weren't, a single line of clarification could have surpassed that.
This stuff their collecting is extremely precious, but at a point of leisure in their tent they still have to open up their container and look at it to know how much they've collected?
Also, said resource has a stupid name. Almost as bad as "unobtainium" (I don't care if it's a real mineral, it pulls you immediately out of the story).
The girls attitude toward pursuing and killing the other soldier was almost lackadaisical.
They have pretty heavy respiratory suits, but it's possible to survive a slog through the jungle with nothing more than your head wrapped in tape with an air-hose?

I don't like long posts on the sift because at a certain point you just don't want to read anymore, so I'll stop there.

Wealth Inequality in America

renatojj says...

Hi @Krupo, you raise interesting points, I'm not sure I can address all of them, even though I think a few issues are worth talking about. I'm sorry you felt I was unfair towards @dag, I can assure you that wasn't my intention, because even after reading your post, I'm not sure I see much difference between taxing individuals and mining companies (at least for the point I was trying to make, IIRC).

I wonder what is it about a natural resource that is underground (and that is mostly useless unless extracted), that makes it such a crime to extract and sell it without some additional taxation. It's not like removing oil or minerals is damaging anybody, and it wasn't actually available until someone extracted it. Sure, if there's pollution, or destruction of property, they should pay. However, just paying because it's a "natural resource", when they're the ones making the resource available to society, seems wrong to me, but I guess those who benefit from taking other people's money can always come up with rationalizations to collect a tax.

If we do charge more taxes for mining, though, won't the company just transfer the taxes to the final product, taxing consumers and other industries? More importantly, will raising taxes contribute in any way to better wealth distribution?

Remember, taxation doesn't mean giving money back to society as we often like to think, it just means giving money to government. That's a big difference. Government uses money not just for operation, but as a tool to further its own political agenda, one that sometimes involves corruption, and the added power that comes with it. Why is it best for society to give government more power? Why is society better off by giving government more fuel for waste or corruption?

The reason I mention corruption is because I believe it's an important contributing factor to wealth inequality. I also happen to think corruption plays a significant part in how a government operates, even in the fairest of democracies.

Obama's Rose Garden Speech on Syrian Action 8-31-2013

Why ask congress for permission? Congress at any given time represents the machine that creates the conflict by giving monkeys the toys to play with-Use religious ignorance and hatred and race and history to foment generational aggression, light fuse, monitor from space.
.....When smoke clears, draw new lines in the mineral-rich sand, repeat. if necessary.

The best protest to involvement in this situation? Don't buy oil or gas products until congress resumes September 8th. Tune-out of all major media. Hammer the White House, reps and senators not with requests, but with fucking demands.

It only works if a majority takes part, and all you can get out of the "majority" of idiots to get behind is a major election cycle, hence, we're fucked.

Fucking people can't seem to extract their heads from their asses and let the slimiest fucking white people continue to ass-fuck the planet....and THEN.....all they can seem to do is bitch about the ass-rape

Zimmerman's Lawyer's Opening Statement Is a Knock-Knock Joke

Lawdeedaw says...

Jimmims, there are generally four types of knowledge that exist in the world. Specialized, whereas only a few people highly interested in the subject would know. The burden of proof lies with the claimant to prove claims he/she makes. (E.g. What are each and every vitamin and mineral found in a GNC multivitamin?)

Then there is uncommon knowledge. Again the burden is with the claimant. (E.g. What are the names of twenty-five out of fifty-one Presidents, not including the last five Presidents. When did America go to the Gold standard—year and month.)

Then there is accessible knowledge. Not everyone knows, but many do and all can with a little research. The burden lies fifty-fifty, sometimes with the claimant, sometimes not, just depends on the situation. (E.g. Rain water is not pure water and contains parasites. Fermentation is a process that produces energy, not just alcohol.)

Then there is knowledge everyone should know—common knowledge. (E.g., Humans need calcium.)

Between the last two is where Stand Your Ground falls. The burden of this knowledge should fall on the reader to know. In no way should a claimant be responsible for providing it. Stand your ground is common knowledge or accessible at the least. It is in the newspapers, on the internet, court records, etc. When someone states, "He is going away for a long time," then it is on them to prove this claim, since SYG has commonly been known to acquit these types of cases. I find it strange, especially in light of this, that you do not ask other people to prove their claims.

I think the acquittal of Zimmerman proves that this was common knowledge in the first place. But wait, here is a link to the acquittal, in case you did not see the not guilty verdict, since I must prove even common knowledge. (http://www.nydailynews.com/news/protests-george-zimmerman-verdict-gallery-1.1398497)

Second, and last, I was snarky with no one personally—I even stated that I was being broad with my comments and did not apply them to the poster. And yet you were snarky directly with me, personally. That is why I thought you were mad. In all reality you made it seem like I was ignorant. That is why I asked you to calm down.

jimnms said:

Calm down, I'm not the one raging, and I wasn't making any argument, I simply stated facts, and based on those facts made a prediction that Zimmerman will be found guilty. Of course with a jury it's not really about the law anymore but which lawyer convinces the jury who was right. Still based on what I've seen of Zimmerman's defense, it's not looking good for him.

You claimed that Florida law "is pretty clear and many examples exist of it getting people off. You CAN chase someone down and start a confrontation, then shot them. Hell, you can be part of a drug deal gone bad and kill someone and get off. Someone can throw a beer bottle at you and you can shoot them." You provided no proof of your claims, and I simply supplied a link to the law showing that what you claim about the law isn't true. The law doesn't "get people off," lawyers do.

The Plan for Global Toxoplasma Domination

ghark says...

gah! It's really annoying when people say that we're 90% non-human, it's misleading and completely false. Yes, we do have 10 times more non-human cells than human cells, however those cells are typically orders of magnitude smaller than our cells, and that's not even accounting for the fact that a lot of what we are composed of is from stuff between cells, like minerals in bone, interstitial fluid etc. The bacteria inside a person tends to only weigh a few pounds, so in fact we're close to 97% human.

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm Opening Cinematic

Maybe it's in the "uncanny valley" of CGI trailers where it almost COULD be gameplay, thus it's more frustrating. The WoW trailers are so completely unrelated from the actual gameplay that it doesn't even make me think of the gameplay.

I'd like to think that some more dramatic scale variations are possible with mousewheel zoom. Heck, even if visual scale doesn't change so much, economic and gameplay scale COULD. What if a battlecruiser took 3000 minerals, 1500 gas, 30 pop, and had a corresponding level of ass kicking?

Shelley Lubben On Abuse In The Porn Industry - (Very NSFW)

scannex says...

This woman seems to be on some sort of crusade... A good number of her "references" for her statistics are based on her own works and her own "pink cross" foundation.
Bad things happening to people is well, bad... but this seems to be some bizzaro hobbled together series of clips of people crying or freaking out etc etc.
The segment at :58 seems pretty clearly to be an emotional response to the acting in the set (where planned choking was occurring), not physical abuse based on her relative composure in the following explanation.
The clip at 1:30 sounds like the other individual is acknowledging and attempting to accomodate the girl
Clip at 1:48 same thing, crew acknowledges a refusal
1:56 could be having a manic episode for all we know without context, and what we hear from the crew seems more empathetic than anything...

This really just seems like a bad attempt to rile a viewers for the goal of supporting a cause, but people here seem to be taking the bait.

Violence is violence... Porn starts would be legally protected like anyone else from being assaulted/abused in any way they did not agree to. Hate to say it, but this is like a coal miner suing for exposure to coal dust.
Industry regulations are well and good and it is very possible more are necessary, but this villian she is trying to create called "PORNNNN INDUSTRYYY" just doesn't hold up IMO.
