NOW It Makes Sense Why Preachers Need Private Jets

Drachen_Jager says...

How about, instead of Amos, you open to the book of Luke.

"No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money." (NLT, Luke 16:13)

Or Matthew

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (NIV, Matthew 6:19-21)

But it's obvious these guys don't actually practice the religion they preach. They're gifted con-men, like most highly-successful American figures who tout their Christianity (looking at you GOP field).

I'm Irish and I know a guy called Matthew. I'll see what I can do for you.

I am vaguely disappointed that this didn't end up with the Irish guy resting on his porch in the twilight, a fine whiskey in one hand and a pipe in the other, as Matthew cries himself to sleep in his brand new gimp cage...

Religion VS Reality

shinyblurry says...

Hey Rflagg, you asked a good question. Why, if you believe that you do here will effect your eternity, would you live according the system of this world? Jesus gives us an answer:

Matthew 6:19-21

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Your heart condition will determine how you live. If you love God with all of your heart, you will live for Him and His Kindom, and your life will reflect that. If your heart is for the things of this world, that is what you live for. This is why the scripture warns us:

1 John 2:15-17

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

For all that is in the world--the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not from the Father but from the world.

The world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God remains forever.

When it says do not love the world, it doesn't mean the people of the world, but the system of the world. If you live in the west you are used to seeing nominal Christians practicing a lukewarn faith. This isn't how it is in many parts of the world; there are many Christians out there with their eyes set on eternity. Many Christians here in America, as well, but they don't sound a trumpet before themselves so you don't see them.

This video, like many others, has such a mistaken view of what the scriptures say about faith; it is referring to a blind faith whereas the scripture calls us to believe based on what God has revealed to us. There is a living God who reveals the truth of His word, and everyone who is seeking Him will find Him.

Second Cheapest Wine

Asmo says...

Used to be (might still be) a brand in Aus called Matthew Lang which made a range of 5 buck a bottle liqueur muscats and ports. I've tasted much more expensive drops, but Lang was still one of the best, and at 22 y/o, goon and coon* (wine and cheese) nights were tres affordable and a great way to impress equally under funded mid 90's upper class wannabes... =)

*Fyi for American's, Coon is an Aus brand of cheese not known for quality, and yes, it has prompted some racism complaints. ; )

Tell Me the Difference Between You and a Socialist

radx says...

What's the difference between a Democrat and a Socialist?

Well, Chris, how about you offer your definition of socialism first. There's at least a few dozen definitions, excluding all the derogatory uses as a generalising term for anything and everything not laissez-faire.

But okay, let's just take a single core issue of socialism: ownership of the means of production.

Is a Democrat intent on handing over ownership of Lockheed-Martin's factories to the people working on the factory floor every day? No?

Is a Democrat planning to hand over ownership of all AT&T property to its employees? No?

Then what the hell is Matthews even rambling about? Same for DWS: just own up to your membership of the democratic wing of the Corporate Party.

Should gay people be allowed to marry?

shinyblurry says...

I can understand why people who are for gay marriage think this way about people who are opposed to it. It is the vocal minority who are acting out of hate and bigotry, and not following the teachings of the Lord Jesus, who draw all of the attention. The response of a Christian towards a homosexual should be love. That does not mean approving of the sin, but we love the person because they were created in the image of God and He loves them, and He sent His Son to die for them as well as us.

From a Christian perspective, I am against the idea of gay marriage for two reasons; One is that God calls homosexuality a sin. The other is that it was God who created the institution of marriage, which you can read about in Genesis 2, which Jesus quotes when talking about marriage:

Matthew 19:4 He answered, "Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female,
Matthew 19:5 and said, 'Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'?
Matthew 19:6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate."

I am also well aware that the world sees nothing wrong with gay marriage, because they believe man created the institution of marriage and not God. If that is true, that man created the institution of marriage, then what should it matter if a man desires to marry another man, or 5 men and a willow tree? But if God created it, then we are accountable to Him and have no right to modify it.
