why is my video getting buried (Sift Talk Post)

Sagemind says...

For the record, I've just tried at home as well.
Doesn't work on my home computer either.

Same system though - Newer OS but Mac running newest Firefox.

Yes, viewing on the individual video page

Hmmm. That's odd. you should probably inform lucky of that. It works that way for me on win-doze and IE, and I think it's intended to work that way on all browsers.
You are trying on the video's page, not on the front page or unsifted video page, yes? It only works on the video's page.

For the record, hovering doesn't bring the vote info up for me.
I'm using the latest version of Firefox on a Mac.

3) if you hover over the vote number, who voted and which way pops up for you now. It's a bit hidden, but it's there.

I had no idea that the additional pages were not loading for some people, they always do for me. I'm glad you've told Lucky.

Why Every New Macbook Needs a Different Goddamn Charger

ChaosEngine says...

It is bullshit, but it's not a problem unique to Apple.

I've never owned a mac, but every goddamned Dell laptop I've used has had a subtly different charger, and they're mostly just a round plug!

As for usb-c for video, meh. People kvetched when they dropped the optical drive, the VGA port, etc. (Hell I remember people complaining on the windows side when laptops stopped having serial ports!) Technology moves forward... and Apple is known for pushing new techs at the expense of old ones.

Still can't believe they put a 480p camera on it, though.
Seriously, what is this? 2005?

The Best of David Mitchell Rants on QI

ulysses1904 says...

The few times I have seen an American on QI they just sit there and watch, like Rich Hall and that PC guy from the "I'm a Mac" commercials. Makes me wonder why they even invite them, they seem overwhelmed.

Mac users MUST use hands to communicate!

I thought I'd comment about this extremely old video, in reflection. It's funny how many devices around me and others I know have changed dramatically. The PC AND the MAC are no longer near "the top" or need to be near the top (granted, Windows is still the platform to beat for personal PC's, but when it comes to mobile platforms...something that BARELY registered back when we were throwing insults around when this video was shown, it's amazing; and now it IS the thing to beat). Now it is all about Android, Apple, or Windows, with a few secondary OS "foundations" (sometimes with hardware) thrown in for fun.

I have one of everything now. My phone an Android, my tablet an Apple, and my PC Windows. Though I still have the one major gripe about Windows and Apple as I did back then; for Apple it is it's need to make self-related products that "you need" to make anything work--much like Nintendo's business model. Microsoft is extremely "information grabby" and they love to lock you down into a certain setup, depending on how you buy or bought your computer (for instance, if you put it together yourself, you can get away from most of these issues--which is what I do; but, most people don't have this luxury). To be honest, I find my Android run devices (my cellphone and my Roku--and as I go forward I imagine a few more will go down that road) to be the best of both worlds, and they typically get along with "both worlds" the most.

Not that Android doesn't have it's own (the Borg) problems, especially as we move into the future. But, as these posts show us, within five years something just like Android (Google) can become a powerhouse that has to be reckoned with. I can't wait.

I still hate Macs!

MacBook vs Yoga Dance-Off

Sagemind says...

lol - yes, I use a Mac, and enjoy using it after years of preferring windows - My laptop has Win7. I just updated from Mountain Lion to Maverics. Not sure if I want Yosemite, but my system at work is updating to it this month.

My daughter, very clearly pointed out that there is no point her having the new laptop or hers (which she paid for herself) with the touch screen, if she can't use the Apps downloaded from the Store. That's where the power is or intent of the whole touch screen experience.

(also I must mention, - my error - she has 8.1 and not just 8 )(Though I'm not really seeing the difference, but I'm not the one using it, just the one who needs to trouble-shoot and keep the thing running.)

excellent start to the flame war!

not sure about 8, because I immediately updated to 8.1 from 8... There is a way to just use old school local accounts, not tied to MS account in any way. The only downside is that you can't download (even free) Apps on the Microsoft Store until you create/link an account, but you can run any of the Win7 and earlier "Desktop" apps.
(Unless you have Win 8 RT, in which case, sorry you're SOL because it has no Desktop mode)

counter-point: OS X Yosemite broke many things from Mavericks. I still run Mountain Lion on my main Mac though. I don't sync to iCloud either.

I just spent the entire weekend fighting with my daughter's Windows 8 laptop.
The microsoft account pretty much hijacked the entire computer. We got locked out of the MS account and it kept prompting us to enter a "Code" to unlock it. It wouldn't send us a code.
Tried to contact MS but Apparently, the only way Microsoft will talk with us, is through our MS account -- their site specifically says, "and if you can't access your account, you need to create a second MS account in order to talk to us."

We ended up just abandoning the entire MS Account and creating a new one, and of course, that locked her out of all the Apps on her laptop. She basically had to make new accounts for everything. All because Windows 8 acts just like those viruses that lock you out of your computer, till you give them your credit card number!!

She can't even use her computer without logging into the MS Account.

Despising Windows 8!

Apple Fanboy Since 1983 (Blog Entry by dag)

newtboy says...

Excellent Dag. Love me some good old noisy floppy disk noises!
I had a 128 mac my parents bought me for Xmas in 84. I ended up trading it to my brother for his Apple 2 (bought for him when it first came out in the 70's) because he had tons of games for it, and I had little on the mac.
I also learned programming on Apple 2's in 7th grade...an elective summer school class. Does that earn me double nerd points?

Libertarian Atheist vs. Statist Atheist

newtboy says...

Is English a second language, or are you just being disingenuous? Me thinks the latter. No...publicly owned roads are NOT toll roads because they are paid for with taxes. Taxes and tolls are different things, that's why they are spelled and pronounced differently. I live on a private road..so I'm certain they must exist.
It is absolutely NOT illegal to create a private toll road on private property with private funds. That's just asinine. It is nearly impossible to build one without using public services, such as the public roads and ports needed to deliver materials, but certainly not illegal.

It's leaching off me if you don't pay your fair share, and you have made it clear you don't think you should have to pay any, so I must assume you do all you can to minimize what you put into the pot...so yes, I would make an educated guess that you are leaching off me. I don't even itemize deductions, because I feel grateful to live in what I feel is a great country, and feel it's unpatriotic to try to shirk my duty to pay for my portion of government, even if I disagree with how they spend most of it. That's the cost of living in a 'representative democracy'.

As to mail, yes, you may not use mail boxes set up for/by the USPS for a private mail service...so you can't do 'first class mail'. You can, however, deliver letters for a fee to your OWN style of 'letter box', so your claim they have a 'monopoly' is ridiculous, they would be so happy to have it taken over, it's a big money loser and a huge pain in the ass to keep going. I'm personally grateful mail hasn't yet been privatized, as I know full well the service would suffer badly to make it profitable, for me especially since I live in the boonies and would never be profitable as a customer. To deliver my letters by FedEx would cost 10 times what USPS charges. (by the way, FedEx and UPS are proof that you already CAN deliver 'mail' privately, just not into a USPS 'mail box')
EDIT: What you said was akin to me saying 'Instead of just complaining about the quality of available burgers, you could open your own hamburger stand' and you answering 'I can't...it's illegal for me to sell "Big Mac's" because...government'.

AND, I would add, you have still never addressed my original point, that if business could/would 'self regulate', they would be doing so now. Self regulation is total fantasy, it simply doesn't happen. How exactly, I wonder, are 'the people' supposed to gain the knowledge about a companie's violations of public trust and health if there's no regulatory agency inspecting and reporting on what the company is actually doing, and they can do all their evil in secret?

blankfist said:

You don't think the roads we have now aren't toll roads? Every gallon of gas you buy has an excise tax on it that pays into the highway trust fund.

Also, the reason why we don't have roads without government is because it's illegal.

And is it leaching off YOU if I'm forced to pay for those services. Hmmm. That's not very sound logic.

Along with Payback, I too am running into oddities accessing the site. For me, it appears to be browser based.

Google Chrome, Safari and Firefox, it works fine. Opera, my preferred browser, has stopped working with the videosift address. The cdn version or direct IP routes work fine.

The ipv4 address matches, and I've yet to acknowledge ipv6 but I'll assume it's accurate
