Jasminum: the hilarious Polish bread slicing scene

Krupo says...

Jan Jakub Kolski directed Jasminium - imdb link.

Excerpt:
The film is about love: primarily about love or love relationship between a man and a woman. The viewer is gradually introduced first to Patricia's unrequited love to the movie star, and as the story unfolds, also to Jasmina's tragic love story with one of the monks, and finally the unhappy love story of Natasza, the main character. And the movie is about love in a more general sense, or similar feelings between human beings: exemplified in the unusual friendship between the little girl Genia and Brat Zdrówko (Brother Sanitas), or Natasza's friendship with Patricia.
...

The precocious narrator Genia is the only person who does not have a tragic love story hidden in the past for obvious reasons. Therefore her narration of the story is fairly objective, with her adorable dryness adding to the humorous aspect. In the end, however, Genia experiences her own version of a sad love story when she must leave Brat Zdrówko.

The key to solving all the mysteries of love lies in finding the right aroma. The film is all about magical smell. This extraordinary idea also adds to the fairytale aspect of the film. The important fact is that Natasza's magic perfume works as a love potion only because the love is already there. She merely gives a little boost by caring and acting upon her sympathy. This leads to the final topic of the film: "saintliness," as the director comments.

The film's message is that the most important thing between people is love and caring, and acting upon one's caring for another person. When the caring and acting reaches a certain level, it qualifies to be saintliness. The final scene, when Brat Zdrówko becomes a saint, confirms this idea. As the viewers saw in the film, Brat Zdrówko is the one who cares the most, even about the piglets; he is the one who acts the most to take care of the entire monastery, silently and inconspicuously. This final message is conveyed again with "a sense of humor and tender attentiveness" as Zdrówko complains he cannot light the stoves with the stigmata his hands.

thanks a_c i doubt i can find a replacement for that one.. ah well.

i saw brokeback at home, and it actually caused me to go into a major depressive episode. thankfully it didn't last too long and i found a website where other people were going through similar reactions, that helped a lot (and made me feel like slightly less of a total FREAK). it seems a little weird to look back on now, to have had such a strong emotional response to a fictitious movie, but it's nice to know i wasn't alone in feeling that way.

i have seen as many love stories / tragedies as anyone else, some of them gay, but there is something about this one that really slaughtered me. perhaps it's just the combination of great storytelling, directing, acting etc, or perhaps it's something else, i could never quite decide.

heath ledger's death brought it all back again, the timing was eerie, i had been planning on posting a brokeback clip for a little while, approaching gold... then that happened just as i was on 49! i had never given the guy a moment's thought before brokeback, but quickly realised he was going to be one of the 'greats' of this generation. i know all life is valuable, but i do feel sad that i don't get to enjoy seeing what he would've done.

oh god i'm raving on already! don't get me started!

I have to say, I loved your "long, boring summary" of this. I went to watch it with my best friend. We got out of the cinema and he was very quiet, I was chatting away, just an unbelievable film, one of the most tragic love stories ever told. And we got to the car and he just sobbed and sobbed. It touched him so much. Of course it didn't touch me in the same way, although there are plenty of love stories that do, but it was so nice, because finally someone had told a proper story about real love between two men. Anyway, i'll try and find an embed for it if you haven't got round to it. Just thought i'd share that with you, as what you wrote made me think of it and i'm sure you got a similar experience as he had

What WALL-E is really about (and it isn't environmentalism)

Sarzy says...

Watch the movie again. The "message" only seems blatant because that's what you made it out to be. There's maybe one or two scenes in the whole movie that don't feature either WALL-E or EVE. The only reason they return to Earth at the end is because EVE wants to take WALL-E back to fix him.

It's a love story -- it just happens to take place in a certain type of future. It's not a message movie any more so than Planet of the Apes is a message movie, or the Terminator is a message movie.

ShakaUVM says...

Its message about consumerism and environmentalism is so f**king obvious and blatant that, ok, yeah, sure, it's not about that at all.

No, no, it's a love story. Why? Because I say it is.

What was your intent?

budzos says...

Sarzy, I don't think that's what he's saying at all. He published a cartoon that is open to whatever malicious interpretation the viewing public might bring to it. His objection is to being asked his intent. He's saying that the intent of a publisher is beside the point. I take the inference that what matters is content.

ie; if you publish a lovely story about Strawberry Shortcake and say your intent was to glorify Hitler and deny the holocaust, you have not committed a crime. If you publish a story about how great Hitler was and how the holocaust is a big lie, and then say your intent was to celebrate Strawberry Shortcake, then you may have uttered hate speech... you can take the intent out of those examples and still adequately and fairly judge the legality of the actions taken.
