Sift Money (Sift Talk Post)

gorgonheap says...

I vote nay on the currency. It would destroy the VS economy. Right now you gain privileges in VS by longevity and effort. And having to earn coins to preform certain actions seems a bit tedious. On top of that there is no way to control the distribution of said coins. Economics today works on a system of currency circulation. Someone is paid for the raw materials. someone is paid to process those materials into product, Product is sold to the people who compile the raw material buy the product.

The system as I see it is siftbot hands out monies. People horde them, or apply them to different things, or hand them out as incentives. I see a lot of 'back door' deals. "Hey you get a shiny new coin if you upvote this video." Let the man work for a living and earn their keep. Involving a currency is only going to corrupt the community.

I has t3h question, you has t3h answer (Sift Talk Post)

Fletch says...

"No but seriously, we thought about that in the past and decided that ultimately it gives older members too much longevity. How could anyone ever expect to catch up with the dot dudes of this world if he had an extra 4 queue slots."

And the queue moves fast enough as it is. There is a black hole in the middle where vids sit for a day or two until they pop up on the "expiring soon" list for one last chance to escape. I can't imagine how big it will be and how fast it will move with 10k or 15k members.

+1 for VS hats!

"You could give each star one additional queued video slot."

But then how would we get people to sign up for charter?

No but seriously, we thought about that in the past and decided that ultimately it gives older members too much longevity. How could anyone ever expect to catch up with the dot dudes of this world if he had an extra 4 queue slots.

Evolution?--Three Republicans in Debate Don't Believe in It

budzos says...

There's nothing logical about your conclusion at all. It's based on the idea that humanity has some kind of "elevated status" to preserve. That's the thinking of religious people. The desire to feel special and elevated is one of the main contributing factors to the spread and longevity of religion.

Atheists are happy in the knowledge that humanity has no elevated status aside from possessing the most complex brains yet to evolve on the planet. We are merely another species of ape, and quite aware that a large percentage of the non-religous population is also insane. There is nothing to preserve, and thus no peole or minds to be destroyed.

One of the few things I have faith in is that rationality will win out over time as each successive generation of humanity learns from the folly of their ancestors. After all, there was a time when most societies believed in multiple gods, and modern christians, muslims, etc.. look back and see it as a quaint, ignorant set of beliefs. So shall the children of our children's children's children look back on the current religious models.

Maher on HPV vaccine idiocy

choggie says...

We are all paid and played....the insight from researchers and lab-brats must come from folks like gluonium and god love em, they enjoy it, and are wired for the work.....

Toxins are toxins, small doses a or large, and if you are in a risk group for contracting whatevrthefk, of course, get the vaccine...or become aware, and un-risky...and for crissakes, worry about cancer before it is understood???

the issue here, mandatory: Immediate red flags arise....
follow the money to it not being spent efficiently, and lining pockets from the top down...

change the motivation, the pardigm ,and suddenly you have cures for disease, longevity systems, free energy, etc.....What disease is the most deleterious to mankind??? Lack of Knowledge....that ain,t book learnin' either...It is, perhaps, remembering how to flourish by living right...back to basics.

Antidepressants Exposed

choggie says...

Thanks theo47 and gwaan, think ya got the vibe intended, and think everyone knows the truth is not as simple as just look at the results and the sucess stories.
The (newly discovered/invention of a) disorder, may be the necessity created by the legal pushers, or perhaps we are getting the most of research with a view to helping society.....doubt it.
Does everyone believe that when the R&D of longevity drugs
comes to fruition in the form of a pill that extends life, or the perfection of growing organ tissue from ones own cells becomes reality, that the masses will beneift???

Not unless the paradigm of $$$$$ is replaced with a more practical form of living on planet earth....only the wealthy and influential......the few.

The rest are given a battery of mind-destroyers....addictive, and deleterious for mind and soul, and you have a society on the brink of some of the most preventable bullshit in recorded history.....

apologies rembar, it is in the robotic nature of domesticated primates to act/react, especially on issues so glaringly imbalanced, i.e. most of the issues of import regarding humans' collective mental and spiritual health....i'm just a hard-headed asshole, and likely to become moreso, as the world I remember, changes in ways, I am fully prepared to deal with, but am not looking forward to have to. All for change, but this exponetial shit is hard to process.....where's my bong??

Cowbell

popular but dead links (Sift Talk Post)

sfjocko says...

Makes me wonder what factors go into a clip's longevity. I presume the bulk of the dead 'uns were pulled by networks or for other copyright reasons. But that doesn't account for all of them.
I'm curious, dag or james, do you have any stats on what percentage of the first few months' postings are now dead?

Queue Escape Level (Sift Talk Post)

Krupo says...

I'm impressed by the longevity/depth of this conversation. Nice.

I love the term "Videosift Shuffle"... wonder if the Mac people would be upset by use of that term?

I was thinking of making a suggestion about the "new queue" button (moving it up) but it's already pretty prominently featured, eh?

An "early boost to front page" button for super-users would tie in nicely to a "resurrect from the past"/"blast from the past" button to return an old classic for another tour of duty on the front page...

also, auto-sort high-to-low vids would be clever... doing it so new vids aren't "lost" at the bottom would be a good corollary...

More Cowbell! - Blue Oyster Cult Skit [SNL]

dag says...

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Thanks for filling this massive gap in the collection. Though I don't have much hope for its longevity. NBC, SNL and YouTube - that's the Devil's triangle baby. ;-)
