The "One Album Per Sifter" Quest (Rocknroll Talk Post)

peggedbea says...

I really dig andrew jackson jihad. they're kind of lo-fi anti folk diy 2 man out of pheonix. but they're not assholes. they've got easy beats and clever lyrics. sometimes their songs remind me of like... really dark metal songs, slowed down and folked up. like most diy outfits, they have a shit ton of random albums, i'll link you some songs from their split with ghost mice because i think it has the most complex, darkest shit on it. and on that album ghost mice covers their song "survival" which makes me really really happy. but i honestly have no idea how to embed just audio here....... pm and give me instructions and i'll change it.

Haha there people go again with that whole "hipster" bullshit. These kids are pretty far from being that. Awesome doc - definitely the end is BS but was presented well in that they won't take shit from no one, or something. Also, good music all the way through they put on some lo-fi, doom, grind, and even a bit of minimalism (Eric Satie).

Someone forgot to tell her that if you want to go viral and surprise people with your unassuming youthful talent you're supposed to do these videos live, standing in your kitchen, not lip-syncing to a pre-record, spotlit in a smoky studio.

[Edit] Lip syncing to a pre-record? I guess you missed the guy behind her playing the guitar? Perhaps you should look up the definition of lip syncing my friend. This is not it.

I take the point (but I don't see the relevance of the guitar behind her).
I was going by her proximity to the microphone (too much low end in the signal, unless whe was using an omni, which you certainly wouldn't want to use on a live video shoot in that environment with people moving around etc.*)

Note also that the info on this video says "The audio for this video was recorded live on the ice at the Centennial Sports Plex in Nashville, TN." whereas some of her others are at pains to say: "the audio for this cover was recorded LIVE with the video, in one take, with no pitch correction applied!" or "The audio and video for this recording were recorded simultaneously live with no studio overdubs or autotune." - Which to me also suggests a disconnect of audio and video (even if they we're both done in the same place!).

That said - it's actually irrelevant if it was recorded live or not. The point remains the same: I think a more raw lo-fi recording / video would create more interest rather than the relatively high / polished production values.

Tales Of Mere Existence "The Loner"

shagen454 says...

Haha, that sounds like me in high school. I was sort of friends with the straight-edge kids who were on the football & lacrosse team (ie fucking jocks). Friends with the cheesy fatwreck punk kids with their intolerable immaturities. Friends with the lo-fi art rock kids, the diy hardcore kids, the loner "abstract artists", the rich brats & golfing kids, the video game geeks, the film nerds and their Videodrome & Holy Mountain... but more importantly I stuck to myself and ended up with a bunch of beautiful weirdo loner babes.

Ironically, for Lev and I since we live in SF we may be loners but it is goddamned impossible to be alone here. Even loners make friends here because everyone in this town is pretty damn weird. The whole loner thing just doesn't work as an adult - but when your a kid it works charms if you're actually into interesting things that no one knows about. If you can't make friends - you're not really alone but it would be pretty damn emotionally isolating - since there are only people & buildings. It was difficult to get used to at first and well - I don't really remember what happened because I spent the next 8 years drinking my way to sociability. Well, until I moved to what I call the only slice of "Appalachia" on Bernal Heights.

Beirut "Sunday Smile" on Letterman 2/6/09

it's definitely nice to see real song-writing hitting the late night. I'm not much a fan of Beirut, I still prefer almost any old lo-fi Elephant 6, pacific northwest, Nebraskan solo tape act or whatever but yeah. Still nice.

How do you buy music? (Music Talk Post)

it's true there are niches where vinyl still works, but it's dying a slow death i tell ya. people tell me proudly they sell "more than 1000 copies of vinyl" and it's like yeah, but what happened to 100,000?

100,000 copies is/was/will always be a dream.

In fact, ask any distributor or pressing plant and they'll tell you the same thing; vinyl sales have gone way up in the last five years. Mostly due to the retro-interests of the indie rock and lo-fi scenes. USB turntables in every college kids flats nowadays.

Most shows I go to lately, they're selling 7"s and 12"s along with t-shirts.
