Happy Colony!

StukaFox says...

Dude! Ants are stealing our JERNTS! Next it'll be our lighters, then our tasty tasty snacks!!

Daaaamn, I'd better smoke this bomber and eat these little Reeses motherfuckers before ants steal 'em.

Hmmm, seems ants are a bad influence. I should hang out with them more!

How iFixit Became the World's Best iPhone Teardown Team

ChaosEngine says...

“The most important thing that happens when a new iPhone comes out is not the release of the phone, but the disassembly of it.”

Demonstrably false. The market has proven that almost no one cares about this.

When the iPhone first came out, people derided it’s lack of removable battery. Good luck finding a high end smartphone with a removable battery these days. Then there was components soldered onto the board, then the removal of the headphone socket, all of which Samsung, etc have copied*.

Outside of a vocal minority, no one cares about phone repairability. If you do, congrats, you’re part of that minority, and that’s fine. Personally, I think it’s a reasonable thing, but clearly, most people prefer thinner, lighter, water resistant phones over fixable phones.

* note: yes, Apple have copied features of droid phones too. No, it’s not relevant to this discussion.

The Truth About The Tesla Semi-Truck

TheFreak says...

So wait...he talks about how important the weight is because it determines the load that can be carried. He does the weight calculations and then immediately starts talking about the cost of the truck and never finishes his weight analysis.

According to his estimation, the weight of the unloaded truck with trailer is 7 tons. If the batteries on a 500 mile truck weigh 8 tons then the total 15 ton vehicle is lighter than the ~17 ton average for a standard semi with trailer. I'd round up for the weight of the motors and since his empty weight calculation seems a tad low. So you can assume the weights of a Tesla truck and stardard truck are at least within spitting distance of each other.

Range is less of an issue since a driver is only allowed to drive a maximum of 11 hours in a 14 hour period. So assuming they drove a solid 11 hours at 60 miles per hour (since that's what the 500 mile range is based on), the standard truck can drive 160 miles further. But if you're driving 11 hours without a break, you're an idiot. And Tesla indicates that a battery can fully charge in under 30 minutes.

Last point, he estimates the battery cost alone will be $108K and $180K but Tesla has set the expected price of the actual trucks as $150K and $180K. Considering a traditional truck runs $80K - $150K, it seems the return on investment for a Tesla truck might be shorter than a traditional truck, given the economy of electric compared fossil fuel.

Great video though. Love all the math.

Sargon of Akkad - This Week in Stupid (13/08/2017)

Asmo says...

Well you missed out the following highlights:

Awful optics of white guys standing around with tiki torches.
Proper breakdown of attendee groups
Short bit on the tiny ideological difference between antifa (communists) and white nationalists (nazis).
Commentary on Trump
More discussion on the rise of white hate which is creating new racists.
Left grading people by their skin colour (including lighter skinned people of colour)
etc

The entire point of the Daryl Davis sift was to show the importance of listening and hearing, to get to know the opinions of others. If you can't even spend 30 minutes listening to alternate opinions (and Sargon isn't even right wing/a supporter of the alt right...) that don't explicitly conform to everything you expect to hear, how do you ever learn?

It's the same confirmation bias that keeps the kkk on life support long after it should have died out.

Nazi Violence Finally Called Out by Media

newtboy says...

Glad you cleared that up. You sure seemed to be justifying him by saying he was defending someone, which he wasn't.
When he pointed, long before he shot, the threat was gone.

I think anyone would be hard pressed to prove exactly who started that violence in Charlottesville. That said, I wouldn't protest armed Nazis without my arms too...and I have firearms. That's a good reason rally permits should bar firearms, especially rallies about contentious topics or by historically violent groups like Nazis.....with much better security.

Certainly there were people on both sides in Charlottesville that came looking for violence, but only one side came prepared to murder. It bears noting, however, that the victims of the car attack weren't attacking anyone, and the 'punch Nazi' people weren't the people run over...so.....

To answer your earlier question, people are upset because very few people are antifa or agree or condone their tactics, and the rest of us expect a certain amount of civility, which includes not shooting into a fucking crowd!!! /frown

Perhaps I didn't make a huge deal about someone with a can of lysol and a lighter, but I did far better than you and Bob, who just want to hear ' the left did something bad' even when the right does things that are horrendous...."those scary blm snowflakes were blocking that street, he had to kill them" is something I've actually heard said seriously. At least I mention both sides as being in the wrong, and give the danger each represents proper consideration.

Asmo said:

Two points followed by some general discussion but w/e...

I didn't try to justify his actions in the slightest, he was wrong to draw the gun and to discharge it. I understand why someone might do something if he sees an idiot with the worlds worst flamethrower trying to set people on fire, but I do not condone it.

I also said that he was drawing the gun to defend others, didn't try to make out that he was being attacked personally. Defense of others is a legitimate reason to step in to a situation (even if, again, I think the amount of force he decided to deploy was way over the top and illegal...).

No, neither side should show up armed, that is how far this whole shit show has barreled down the hill. And yes, I would be fairly certain that a bunch of white supremacists would be armed, so if I did show up to protest against them, I sure as fuck wouldn't be attacking them first and giving them reasons to lose their head and draw down on me... They certainly are the types that gravitate to gun ownership, rebellion against the government etc, I don't think that's a huge surprise to anyone right?

One of the first rules about fighting I learned way back in the day when I worked security is that it's fucking stupid to launch violence against anyone that you do not explicitly need to because you have no idea what they can do, what they have access to etc. If you can resolve a situation with words rather than fists (or more), do so at every opportunity. The idiots showing up to 'punch nazis' really have no concept of this. They show up to 'take nazi scalps' and expect no repercussions?

And yeah, you clearly put this up as a 'left did something bad, OMG THE RIGHT DID SOMETHING WORSE', the entire screed describing the vid only mentions the pyro once as a minor note in a story about the evil armed racist. You're about as fair and balanced as Faux and it's bitchy little stunts like this shit which will always put you exactly where BK33 says you are.

Fucking amazing, you're moronic enough to make Bob right. Kudos...

But I still believe that it's more important for people to see what happened than to suppress it, so the vote stands (petty would be taking it away now you've insulted me ; ).

Nazi Violence Finally Called Out by Media

Asmo says...

Two points.

Completely unreasonable to discharge a firearm in to a crowd like that, although I'm fairly sure that guy is drilled enough that he could accurately shoot someone at that range if he really wanted to. The guy has been charged, correct? Entirely appropriate.

Second, you notice the missiles incoming, the dickhead trying to turn a spray can in to a flamethrower? Do you honestly think these were isolated events? Do you not think that people prepared for this? Or does every person carry aerosols and lighters just for shits and giggles?

The pretext of antifa is that assaulting people is fine because it's proactive self defense, right? If it's okay to physically attack people for thinking and saying offensive things, then why the fuck is anyone complaining about someone drawing a weapon to defend others against an actual attack??? /grin

That's the problem when you justify unreasonable actions on one side, whether you like it or not you justify unreasonable actions for everyone.

And just to ice the cake, if you're dumb enough to show up with sticks/stones/cans of spray against the the white right who are well known to be armed to the motherfucking teeth, you might want to avoid poking the bear.

ps. Upvoted your vid because it should be seen (the more documentation about the whole shebang the better) and because I'm not a petty cunt... X D

Math hiphop (clipping - story 2)

eric3579 says...

Godsmack is how the wind feels
On the face of Mike Winfield
On his way home from the bar where he works
Nights - the worst nights, don't nobody tip right
And between the marriage offers and the fist fights
And if another mother fucker touch his wrist trying to pull him in to whisper
He ain't making it to midnight
Don't they know he got a lighter in his pocket
A matchbook in his sock and a block full of charred skeletons closeted begging to get out
He paused cause he's scared of airing out the thoughts
He can taste it in his mouth the sulfur and bitter carbon
Hearing all the burning bodies shout but no
That was a full lifetime ago and nobody ever has to know
He has never told well except Ronald
But that don't count he was sweet and exactly what he needed him to be at the time
Wine and candlelight and nice texts at lunchtime
Why had he not called Ron back
Guess there just wasn't a spark, ha!
No, no, musn't joke about these things
Wouldn't want to disappoint Doc Clark
So many hours on the couch
So many buried memories that take so many tears to get them out
Water hadn't never been a friend
Hold up - where had he seen that car before
Blue Acura dent on the left rear fender
Back again the sense of
Deja Vu
Strange things you
Never shake when you wake up in recovery
But suddenly noticing ash is covering his head cause it's raining from the sky
Dials home on his cell phone and gets no reply
What the fuck?
Where is the babysitter that he overpays
Body takes over and brain becomes disengaged
Michael is running his house is three blocks away
Adrenaline compensating for change in age
Since the last time that he ran it god dammit
Mike knows he gotta get home fast as he can
Looks up in the sky, glow's familiar
Knows those families died with similar
Awnings and on and on he keeps going
Hits the corner just as he hears the explosion
Screams come from the house, "Did you get them out?"
Mike asking the crowd that has gathered 'round
Tears running down his face
There's that familiar taste
He wishes it would take him to another place
Son and his baby girl in his home and he can't believe that it's gone in a cloud of smoke
And he's choking and running forward and hoping against hope that he might find them alive and well
When he knows the results too well and he knows that fooled himself
And he keeps walking towards the house rather what house is still left
No intention of stopping letting the smoke take his breath
Some strong arm rocks him aside Mike falls to the ground and cries
Why won't you just let me die
Why won't you just let me die

That's pretty sick *promote

Pipe Cutting Mistake

ulysses1904 says...

Reminds me of when I was helping my neighbor cut branches. He was at the top of an extended ladder that was leaning against the branch he was chainsawing, about 20 feet up. I'm bracing the ladder and I realize once he cuts off the outer part of that branch the remaining part is going to be a whole lot lighter, and the ladder won't be leaning against it anymore. He was grateful I brought it to his attention, to say the least.

Why it Probably Wasn’t Better Being Single

enoch says...

ah,the days of being in a relationship with a woman, who loved painkilllers with her jug wine.

who would wake me up in the dead of the night, using the super heated metal tops of a bic lighter on the bottom of my feet (those are called "smileys" for those who do not know) to scream at me about some girl who had the audacity to look my way at target, because 3:30am is the time to find out if i am having sexual thoughts about random women.

or an earlier girlfriend whose father was a prominent artist in the country and was holding a weekend jazz festival.i had a customer who had cerebal palsy, and one leg had been amputated, whose boyfriend had just broke up with her and she was a wreck.

so i had this bright idea! why doesn't this poor emotional wreck of a woman come to the jazz festival of my girlfriends dad? that will get her mind off things right?

but, having a second person accompany made me a little late.so when i finally showed up,my girlfriend was already half in the bag,and mad.i tried to explain and introduce her to mary, the heartbroken girl.

and my girlfriend broke my nose with a bottle of michelob.i do not think she cared that mary was heart broken, and an utter wreck in need of human company.i could be wrong, this is just a guess, but the bleeding from my broken nose may have been a strong indicator.

or how about the time i was counseling a long time friend, who had pulled a midnight move out to escape a man who had basically had her trapped in a spare room, chaining her to the wall.that man had gone as far as severing her achilles tendons, after her first attempt to escape, and this woman suffered from a severe case of PTSD.

now she did form an almost childlike bond to me.maybe because i had offered her the first taste of true compassion, and offered her safety and comfort, and allowed her to talk the poison and bile out that had been building inside her for over three years.

but her attachment to me,which was to be expected, was not viewed favorably by my girlfriend.i spent a lot of time and attention in drawing this broken and damaged young woman to feel safe, and to begin to feel human again(which infuriated my girlfriend).my patio was always filled with friends, artists and people of interest, and i did my best to bring a normalcy to this young womans life in order to help her acclimate, and to feel human again.

and my girlfriend would come home, get drunk, and start to whisper the most vile.and disgusting things..not about this young woman, but about me.

which,of course,if you understand the mentality of an abuse victim.especially one who had suffered such as she had.any criticism,or perceived threat to the person who had (in their mind) saved them, will create incredible anger and anxiety.

so because of my girlfriends irrational jealousy of this woman, and in her drunken selfishness, she went out of her way to make this woman feel as uncomfortable, and as unsafe (the exact opposite of what i was trying to do).so much so that the young woman...who didn't want to be a burden,or affect my life in a negative way...left my home, and wrote me she would never come back, because she loved me and didnt want to cause problems.

two weeks later she was found dead in motel room.over dose of piankiller and xanax...and wrists slashed to ribbons.

or how about the time one of my girlfriends broke three of my ribs, because i was being kind to a waitress?

or the time another girlfriend stabbed me,because while she was unhappy with our relationship, she could not abide me talking to anyone who owned a vagina.in this case a fellow artist i was collaborating with, and who happened to be not only an amazing human being but beautiful as well.

or that one time, when i broke up with a girl, because it simply was not working out and she repeatedly rammed her ford fairmont station wagon into my brand new firebird?

oh..the stories i can tell about all my wonderful relationships, and the women i have shared portions of my life with.i could write a book...

and then i watch this video, and i am overcome with an urge to drive cross country to the creators home, walk inside, grab him by the ankles and crag him outsides....and beat him senseless.

because he is coming from a false premise.
he is implying the that the benefits of relationships outweigh he selective memory our brains create when reliving our moments of singlehood.

when the reality is this:as long as you have friends, who love and accept you for who you are,you are never actually single.you are surrounded and loved by an extended family.

i do not need a girlfriend.
i do not want a girlfriend.
i am not interested in getting married.
and as i have revealed here,i would prefer some memories to remain buried under the much happier and adoring memories of my actual friends who put up with my eccentricities, and my overall oddness, rather than deal with a woman who is smitten with the ideas fed to them by institutions, and periodicals such as comsopolitian and vogue.

though, ironically,i have two ex girlfriends living in my home as i write this.
one is a former porn star, and current stripper who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, and is a recovering addict.

while the other i had to go do a midnight rescue from a place where she was renting a room, but the house was junkie house, and she is a recovering addict as well (and they also kept stealing everything from her).she has bought a house, but it needs work and that work is taking fooooooorever.

and BOTH of these women still harbor some residual feelings towards me.even though i have been quite clear, open and honest that i have ZERO interest in rekindling anything, with either of them, but that hasn't stopped them from being all catty with each other, and causing drama, and complaining about the smallest, tiniest and most ridiculous of things to bitch about.

at first i tried to play referee.
i did my best to help everyone get along, until i realized they both had no interest in getting along.they wanted to outdo the other in order to get my attention.

which is just.....dumb..but anyways,my new way of handling their insipid complaints is always this response:i don't care.

and it seems to work beautifully.

so there you have my story,or at least part of it.
and i have to say...this guy is kinda full of shit.

for those of you happily married, with a great partner,i salute you.good for you,and i mean that.

but for me?
no thanks.i am good.

M60 - History in life & gaming (Ahoy)

TheFreak says...

The M60 was my weapon in the light infantry. Not so easy to fire from the shoulder while standing and I can't imagine why you'd fire it from the hip. That's video game stuff.

When my 60 was replaced with a SAW in '92 I was sad to see it go. The SAW didn't have nearly the effective range of the M60 and the higher rate of fire and shorter timed burst made it less effective at walking rounds on target. I did, begrudgingly, have to admit that the improved portability and easier handling of the weapon made it more flexible overall. I believe it was a less rugged weapon but being in the light infantry, the lighter weight was welcome.

collegehumor-kinda racist? try diet racism!

bcglorf says...

Look north up here to Canada. Section 718.2(e) of our criminal code:
all available sanctions other than imprisonment that are reasonable in the circumstances should be considered for all offenders, with particular attention to the circumstances of aboriginal offenders.

Call it my white male privilege but I don't accept the SJW definitions of racism and instead go by the dictionary definition:
a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human racial groups determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to dominate others or that a particular racial group is inferior to the others.

That is to say, differential treatment based solely on race is racist. In Canada, we still have racist laws as part of our legal code. The fact it's purpose is try and help a minority doesn't change the fact it is still a racist law. Personally, I hold to this crazy notion that racism is still wrong. In theory this specific law was meant to offset the disproportionate imprisonment of aboriginal people in our justice system. In practice though, violent crimes are most often not random and are inflicted on people known to the assailant. So, in practice this has meant less prison time for aboriginal defenders, but it's also meant that aboriginal victims see their attackers typically getting lighter sentencing as well.

Racism is wrong, but you are mistaken to say that the far left doesn't itself indulge in it's own forms of racism. You don't have to google long to find far left SJW's declaring that only white people can be racist and only males can be sexist...

JustSaying said:

Your problem starts with thinking there's a left wing and a right wing. Kinda like believing there's 'conservative' views and 'liberal' views. You're buying into the labeling scheme.
Not being racist doesn't mean you're a liberal left-winger.
Not being racist means not being a douchebag. That's all there is to that.

Or, you can just carry a lighter (or matches) in your car. Pretty useful to have a small survival kit in your car if you plan on going off road and running out of gas.

Removing rusted nuts using a candle and a lighter

CrushBug says...

I have to disagree. Changing tires is probably one of the most mundane things you can do to a car, short of refilling washer fluid or the gas tank. This is something anyone can do, usually because all the tools to do it come with your vehicle. I swap my wheels each winter/summer change and I certainly don't have a torch or penetrant. I do have a lighter and candles, though. Thankfully, I haven't ever hand this problem.

olyar15 said:

Wow, talk about pointless.

Anyone who does any work on cars will have a torch and a can of penetrant. Those work far better and faster than a candle and lighter. Seriously, use the proper tools for the job.

Removing rusted nuts using a candle and a lighter

Mordhaus says...

It works, but I used a little butane torch when I tried it a while back. I don't see how the lighter was able to get it hot enough to trigger the capillary action.

I could see how someone who was a mechanic might give this as a tip for the average Joe who might not have a torch and wd40 handy.
