Yeah I'm not sure this is a great idea, but people do a lot weirder and crazier shit to their kids, and at least he's going to be physically fit.
When kids are trained in eastern martial arts, there's usually a side-lesson about restraint and responsibility. Most martial arts have an underpinning of spirituality and a code of conduct. There's nothing spiritual inherent to straight-up pugilism; it's a sport (designed to hurt people.) I hope Dad takes time to teach his boy not to pulverize the other kiddies for fun on the playground.

You better send them to the east. If you've ever been to a studio in the states, it's a fucking joke. Too much cry-baby parents to really discipline the kids the way they need to be to get any effective results. And all that spiritual bullshit is just worship in one's self-control and abilities. You don't need to be fed that karate kid bullshit to have that.

Ah, rumours abound, apparently the kid knows a little karate before going to china, and is nicknamed the karate kid after being beaten up the first time. So really its a derogatory name given to him by the kung fu fighters.

The should have changed the name. It should be Kung Fu Kid. Who the hell thought it would be a great idea to keep the same name but completely change the whole movie?

Supposedly it's going to be "The Kung Fu Kid" outside the US but to the average Joe here "Karate" means "martial art".
The movie doesn't look nearly as terrible as I expected.

I actually really want to see this, but I am extremely irritated by the application of the term Karate to a film about Kung Fu and China. At the same time, I know it's all about marketing and appealing to the American public who is so familiar with (and maybe nostalgic for) the original Karate Kid, which was about the Japanese martial art Karate.

Still, I'd have been much happier if they'd just called it The Kung Fu Kid. Not everyone in America is a fucking ignoramus, nor should people actively contribute to the country's collective ignorance.
