A coat checker at a museum meets a Ph.D. student.

Also, the very beginning was weird.

They just show him walking for a couple of seconds, then cut to "2 days earlier."

Like... two days earlier than... that time he was walking? 😕

Could've done without that look-ahead and just started out at the two days earlier stuff.

Valedictorian Gives Unapproved Speech on Abortion Rights

Mordhaus says...

You can't kill a living human being...

Death Penalty exists...

Abortion will always be a touchy subject, but if you have money to travel, you can get that abortion in places that support them. So what these abortion laws do is punish poor people who can't make that trip. Then those same people are forced to either put the child up for adoption (because we don't have a ton of children that can't be adopted already) or they can raise that child, most likely in the same situation that led to them being poor and not having a proper family unit.

Storytime, and god help me if my wife ever finds out I talked about this.

I was raised in a poor home, with an abusive family. My wife was raised in a poor home with a good family. When we started dating after High School back in 1992, you had two choices for safe sex, condoms or birth control (doctor visit with no insurance and it was Texas in 1992, they weren't just tossing it out like free candy). We had to use condoms because we couldn't afford birth control and because she was scared of using it. If you have ever read the side effects, you might be too, seeing as death can be one of them in rare instances.

So condoms were the watchword. But accidents happen; maybe one just didn't work right, maybe it was the one that broke one time, but we ended up getting pregnant. I told her that I would do whatever she wanted. We planned to marry soon anyway, so I said we could shotgun it if need be. She said she didn't think she wanted a child. So I said that it was HER decision, but I would be there through it.

It isn't easy. Unless you have been in that exact situation, you will never know the fear and uncertainty involved. We were 18 and 20, just starting out with shit jobs, living with parents, and with a 1968 Catalina as our only vehicle. Her parents would have forced her to have it if they knew, because they thought the same way as @bobknight33. We would have been stuck living with them, they already didn't like me because I wasn't deeply religious and not into ranch life. My parents wouldn't have taken us in because my mom didn't like my wife until years later. The stress and anger would have probably split us up, and both of us would have likely remained poor to this day.

Instead, my wife chose to not have the child and got an abortion in the first trimester. We kept it to ourselves, married later, and are still together today. We both fought our way out of being poor people to being on the upper spectrum of middle class. We decided we just didn't want kids and now we spoil our niece. I will swear right now that we would never have made it to where we are today if we had been forced to raise a child because of someone else's deranged idea that every child must be born regardless of the future in store for it.

So, yes, I can speak to what an actual poor person goes through in that situation. We were lucky, because there weren't laws rammed through by religious people who have no clue of the consequences, just a strong delusion that God wants all children born. Funny how those religious people wash their hands of the aftermath of their crusade. Even funnier are the ones that quietly send Mary Lou to California to 'visit an aunt' for a couple of months when they find out their spawn got knocked up.

TL;DR

If you fight against easy abortions, except those where the child has reached the capability to survive if it had to be medically removed from the mother, you and the rest of your ilk can go fuck yourselves.

Millennial Home Buyer

In terms of the UK, your average house price was under £10 000 in the 70s. If wages had increased at the same rate as house prices have increased, which is not an unreasonable request, especially if you're mocking them for not having the money, then the average wage would be £87 000. Alternatively, if house prices had increased at the same rate as wages have, the average house would be worth around £60 000. It's no good talking about people buying iPhones when that disparity exists - if anything, the iPhones help distract them from their poverty.

It's been rigged for 40 years now, bob. Who do you think a landlord/renter economy benefits more - the young or the old? You are blind to the reality of life for people just starting out.

Sooner or later, civilisation is going to have to change to account for this. You can call me a lefty all you like, but the numbers don't lie - this isn't sustainable, the cost of living does not match full time pay for a huge number of people, including necessary and skilled jobs like nurses and teachers (in the UK).

It's no longer about aspiration, or working harder at school. Average people are struggling and that should be a concern to you if you care about society at all. In fact, if you're a die-hard, card carrying, flag waving capitalist it should worry you. Landlords aren't wealth creators.

3-piece teen girl cover of Enter Sandman

ChaosEngine says...

Forgive me, oh benevolent metal god, I guess you're more metal than me.

/rolls eyes

I never said you only listen to metal, and I didn't disagree with you that Metallica's early albums are great (although Lightning, Puppets and Justice are a massive improvement on Kill 'em all).

But you're not some benevolent metal guru here to "bestow a gift", you're bitching about a song that a bunch of teenage girls choose to cover. They're just starting out as musicians. Let them find their way before you get all righteous on their ass.

And just for the record, I didn't upvote this either. I just don't see the point in picking on them.

poolcleaner said:

Fuck true metal? It's mostly a joke, dude, not a sense of entitlement. You want to read entitlement and serious judgement in my comments? By all means, chaotic fool, use it as a platform for your Internet social gain. But I'm speaking from the perspective of someone with years of knowledge passing it down. I cited songs which Metallica wrote and played which are hard and fast, raw and powerful, exuding the youthful energy of their best albums, which are for some reason blacklisted and instead we hear the songs that the recording industry WANT you to hear because they're marketable. The songs I listed are awesome and considered by some to be the real gift Metallica left us with, like Van Halen's first 4 albums.

I bestowed a gift, and you saw me being high and mighty for my gain? Sounds like YOU have some problems to deal with.

I dont only listen to metal. I played sax, guitar, bass, and drums, but now mostly play percussion -- I like hitting things. I was in a rolling Stones and velvet underground cover band, played some gospel folks stuff for a while. I provided my perspective on metal because I thought it beneficial. For the music obsessed, hearing something over and over on the radio for the remainder of your life, when there is better material from the band and the idea of popularity as some sort of higher value than the subtleties you pick up on when you have standards, it's all very silly to read. You are a jerk and now I'm sad.

Thanks. Gift horse doesn't like staring contests.

What most schools don't teach

Teddy says...

This video really speaks to me. I'm just finishing up my computer science degree, and as part of it, I end up doing a lot of tutoring and actual teaching the classes for those who are just starting out (I want to teach it when I get out).

I always tell the freshmen, computer science is not about any particular language, or coding, its really about problem solving. Its the ability to take a large or complex problem, break it down into smaller tasks, then solve those small tasks. We just happen to do it using a computer. Those I notice that succeed and do well seem to really get this.

Of course I also always tell the freshman to indent when they see a curly brace...but that never happens.....

Paul Mooney ~ On White People & Hip Hop

shang says...

Mooney is hilarious, the thing with him you have to realize is he's not 100% genuine. He's the black troll, and made his entire career out of trolling.

he used to get on the Morton Downey Jr. show just to incite fights (pre white trash Springer show from the 80s) back when Morton got more ratings than Geraldo Rivera's show, until Rivera got hit with a chair live on air breaking his nose.

Morton Downey Jr would smoke on his talk show and flick his cigarette but at guests the would fight with him anyhow Mooney's "black troll" and the "so called" civil rights preacher Al Sharpton used to troll as well he hated jews and gays in the 80's on the Morton Downey show.

Here's Al Sharpton's old "character schtick" on the show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aSSjtKV0EY

Mooney went on the hone and perfect his "negro troll" character, and has made an entire career out of it, watch the Morton Downey Jr documentary you can actually see a much different mooney back then just starting out with this schtick.

Warren Buffet: Increase Taxes on Mega-Rich

MycroftHomlz says...

40% income tax on my wife and I right now would financially cripple us. We would not be able to afford housing or food. Right now, we have only about $100 a day to spend on consumables, and we are fiscally responsible adults. And we have 2 PhDs. I just got a fellowship for a postdoc at the best university in the country and it will barely cover the rent. And she is still looking for work there.

Indeed, it is likely that 10 years from now our combined income will place us in the highest tax bracket. It is also probably that I will recognize that there are people like me, who are just starting out, have a fantastic education, are looking for work, and struggling to make ends meet.

The arrogance of a flat tax speaks volumes about the ignorance and naivety of those of who propose such a ridiculously preposterous idea.

>> ^gwiz665:

Flat tax. 40 % income tax for everyone. End just one of the wars you're all fighting, and you'll be out of the economic crisis in 5 years.

Good stuff. The part about the "most beautiful woman in the world" sounded really familiar though. Marc Maron has me paranoid about joke stealing.

welcome to my world! You know how annoying it is when you notice stolen jokes and either you can't remember the origin or if you can, nobody gives a shit? I've heard that "look like a lesbian" bit on separate occasions as well.

I do goddamn believe this is what you're talking about: http://videosift.com/video/Mitchell-and-Webb-Best-Man-Cuts-Through-

This guy is not terrible, but brilliant? Gervais is brilliant. This guy? Nah.

Gervais is outstanding, so are most of the comedians I love so much. To me this guy is just starting out, and he's brilliant. And thanks for the promote blanky

Warcraft has such a HUGE lore with hundreds of damn characters from tons of different media that they have to put into their MMO. On the one hand it's cool to draw from all this stuff on the other they've had to rewrite a TON of lore and they just forget other parts of it.
That being said I watched this Blizzcon thing and most questioners were self important demanding nobodies who weren't looking at this new awesome world blizz created that has a ton of cool new stuff. They were just whining and complaining about meaningless nothings...everything to them was a personal transgression. Blizzard should just start out every question with the questioner having to be on his knees and thanking them for creating the best MMO ever and for constantly making it interesting.
Honestly some of the most entitled people in the world are Gamers. Go outside jackasses.

I see we have some blizzard fans in the house?
From my unbiased viewpoint, i think blizzard ought to be apologising for taking MMO's down the horrendously easy, cheap duplication of instances/events to keep the masses grazing, everyone gets every piece of loot they want, low skilled, low risk....road.

Unbiased Viewpoint? You have to be retarded to start out a rebuke with that bullshit. Also what did I just say about Gamers being "Entitled Jackasses". Thanks for proving me right you entitled jackass.

What are you talking about? I list off a bunch of reasons why i dislike a game and that's biased? Especially compared to someone saying "people should get on their knees to blizzard for making teh beast game evarrrrr!!!"
At what point did i demand that they change their game for me? As far as i can see, i said that i didn't like the way they took the MMO genre. Entitled jackass is right, but i think you're pointing the finger in the wrong direction.
Have at it, you won't hear another peep from me. God forbid i dislike something you like and explain what i prefer.

It's funny how opinions can differ so much. I've always found wow to be completely inferior to the precursors such as everquest(1) and DAOC. Those games gave you the utmost pride in your time investment. It was difficult, it took time, but that was the journey, and the end game was difficult and rare, so when you got there and when you got that loot, and when you just managed to beat a 'raid instance' for lack of a better term, you felt unique. It was difficult enough to GET to that required level anyway - this weeded out the idiots, ninja looters, etc. because once you showed yourself to be an idiot or a ninja looter (or whatever), everyone got to know about it.

I really hate being death_knight_clone_3234 with <best weapon 01> and <full armour set tier x>. The levelling journey is the most fun thing about wow to me, and that lasts all of a week or two. Far too easy, and as such, not even worth the retail purchase to me.
