big ol boppy riff

To me that has a lovely Joe Satriani vibe to it.

OK, now I have no option but to spend my afternoon with him on in the background. There are advantages to working from home.

When Someone Requests A Steve Vai Song

noims says...

Cheers for that. I decided to double my sifting efficiency and watched https://videosift.com/video/Drone-Flight-of-the-Year to that soundtrack... they synched up like Wizard of Oz and Dark Side of the Moon... and I'm not even high! (I started the drone flight after about 50 seconds if you want to try it yourself).

Off to listen to some Joe Satriani now that I'm in the mood for real guitar.

Asmo said:

Steve Vai is one of the best instrumentalist guitarists in the world, known for incredibly complex music which would be best defined as 'soaring'.

That this guy got in the ballpark (and actually did a reasonable rendition of the song) is amazing.

Here's a 'performance' (apparently it's guitar synced) of the song so you can hear it.

Strange Korean instrument

MilkmanDan says...

After the last one here on the sift (her covering Hendrix's Voodoo Chile), I did a YT search and found this one and others. I like her taste in music (Hendrix, SRV, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, etc.) and her skill with this instrument (Gayageum) -- follow oritteropo's advice and search for more if this was your cup of tea!

oritteropo said:

The strange instrument is called a Gayageum, and if you do a google search for it you will mostly find videos by Luna Lee (like this one!).

HA! I never noticed that before! Flying.. was the first cd I ever bought so I love cranking that up. Saw him play "back to.." live once and nearly lost my mind

In reply to this comment by MilkmanDan:
I like Joe Satriani, but I hadn't ever heard this song. I have Surfing with the Alien, so I thought the description was odd. Turns out the song is from the album Flying in a Blue Dream instead which is one of the few albums of Satriani's that I don't have.

Song was good, the video was not great quality and a little meh. Still, I'll upvote for the introduction to a Joe Satriani song I had missed!

16 year-old Yasi SHREDS in original song "Tender Storm"

handmethekeysyou says...

There's a difference? I still don't believe they're separate people.

My theory is that some time in the 70s, as a teenager, Joseph Steven Satrivaini had the most insane acid trip ever that actually caused him to split into two entities. Steve Vai is what would become of him if he continued as a drug user. Joe Satriani is what would become of him as a non-drug user. Turns out nothing is really affected by drug use other than physical appearance.>> ^shuac:
Someone's a Joe Satriani fan. Or Steve Vai.

How To Make Weird Sounds On Guitar

MilkmanDan says...

Cool! I enjoy seeing all the weird ways that people come up with for making "unexpected" sounds from instruments, particularly electric guitars. Videos of Joe Satriani concerts are fun also -- he incorporates a lot of stuff like this into songs.

Incredible guitar solo by Deep Purple's Steve Morse

CaBhaal says...

Though I am not sure I would label him as "best guitarist" as suggested by the tags, he is extremely talented. He was invited to play among some of the world's greatest guitarists on Steve Vai's Christmas album "Merry Axemas". His rendition of "Joy to the World" sits comfortably with offerings from the likes of Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, Joe Satriani, Jeff Beck and Alex Lifeson.

Thanks for posting.
