Expensive Wine Is For Suckers

JustSaying says...

Taste is at least 50% psychology.
I once made a raspberry sorbet. Yes, it tasted very much like raspberry (because it was mostly raspberry) and if you work long enough with fruits, it's characteristic shade of red gives you a good hint what it is.
I like to let people taste stuff I make without telling them what they're eating. And then I ask them what they thought they ate. I gave several people that sorbet and out of 12 people, two or three gave me the correct answer what it was on the first try. Every red fruit you can imagine was mentioned by the others, one guy even told me it could be watermelon.
Another time I made a Cassis Panna Cotta (Cassis is french for black currant, you illiterate crouton). That stuff is purple like rain and Joker suits. We served it in a room that was lighted in blue and violet, like a Dario Argento movie. The Panna Cotta looked brown under the colored light. Some people thought they were eating something with chocolate in it.
In both examples I was dealing with people who made a living with selling and producing food.
That's how trustworthy your brain is when it comes to taste. Sometimes you can't tell raspberries from watermelons. And that's why the wine business is at least 50% bullshit.

Fascinating autism test for "theory of the mind" in children

SquidCap says...

Hmm, i don't know if it is that.. I see this all the time too (i tutor and do support to one 3D design software). Usually it is more about the person not knowing the right terms; they don't know what questions to ask or how to identify the problem, the steps that we "computer literate" know to do when we encounter a problem.

Fortunately we have screencaps, allthou often you need to teach them how to make them. I usually try to be thorough, even thou it means spending a lot of time explaining, trying to show them the way for them to solve the problem..

But then again, my "clients" are not totally illiterate which makes it a bit easier but then again, 3D design has very special concepts and terms you need to know; you just can't say "your UV mapping is screwed" when they hardly know what a vertex is.. So you have to explain the very basics of it to solve a problem that takes about a minute if they would send me their models.. I do make them all watch about an hour of videos and read few pages, very often they figure it out once they understand the logic and know the basic terms; they can use google to find it out then.. Teach a man to fish type of strategy.

But it's not that they have some mental defect, they just don't know how the freaking machine works, they have no other words to use but vague, totally gibberish. And they are afraid of using some term they are not 100% sure if it's the right one, a bit like talking a strange language.

I've always said this "Sally-Anne" scenario doesn't just reveal something about the autistic mind. I see it in people every day, particularly as an IT tech. Some people just don't have an intrinsic understanding that others are not seeing the images in their head when they are describing something, using vague pronouns and ambiguous terms that make sense in their head. They are incapable of "reading my mind" to know that I can't read their mind.

They don't seem to understand that others were not in the room experiencing their computer problems along with them, and then act put out while I ask 20 questions to ask them to describe what the hell is going on. Usually with an impatient air of "why am I asking all of these redundant questions? "

And it has nothing to do with being computer literate, and everything to do with not recognizing that I don't share your perspective without some more info. I work with many techno-phobes who don't have to be coached like that.

BTW, repeating"I can't log in, it won't let me" has been used to describe countless scenarios, you might as well ask me to guess which card you just picked out of a deck.

lawrence odonnell-shocking mistake in ferguson grand jury

Asmo says...

The explanation at the top of this thread + the video which you can watch if you are functionally illiterate, explains exactly what isn't the law...

But I know you're literate, you spew bullshit back to other posters. So I can only conclude that you are deliberately ignorant of the law...

You're an ex-police officer, correct? So you were given a badge and a gun even though you seem incapable of understanding the law you swore to uphold.

And we wonder why cops are gunning down people without legal justification?

What is the LAW? When can a cop shoot / kill an offender? It was handed to them. I would think that they read it ? What was given to them?

"Stupidity of American Voter," critical to passing Obamacare

Trancecoach says...

Like I said, you'll just have to settle for trying (in vain) to convince your fellow sifters by shouting.

Attempting to comprehend, let alone respond to, your ramblings is the epitome of exercises in futility. And when someone points this out to you that your rants make no sense, you'll say that it's because that person cannot read.

It's as though an illiterate person tries to argue, in writing, with a Harvard professor about whether the professor knows how to read. It's absurd.

And what's most absurd, of course, is that the professor spends any time debating at all!

Musician arrested for singing in subway

speechless says...

The cop called in for backup after a severe and unsustainable bout of cognitive dissonance (reading aloud in his own voice the law that proved he was wrong).

Unable to process this information because his fragile concept of self is shattered publicly and captured on video to the cheers of the crowd, but yet also trying to reason with the madness in his mind, he decides that "ejecting" is better than "arresting". Fully knowing that both solutions are wrong.

Fearful, because his brain is scrambling like an egg in a blender, he moves far away from what is really just a man standing alone singing. Moves away because somehow he is unable, unsafe as an NYPD cop, to handle a man armed only with a guitar and a voice. He needs backup.

With all of his bravery, and hand on his holster, he marches back to the musician and takes the guitar away, but the song keeps on playing.

Literally unable (4:37) to physically affect an arrest or "ejection" against a completely docile and non-resisting "suspect", our embarrassed crime fighter lets everyone know it's none of their business.

But don't worry, help arrives at last! (6:03) And now officer illiterate can be a tough guy hero in front of his cop buddies and manhandle the dangerous singer. See? He didn't even need their help. He was just biding his time for the right opportunity to capture that criminal guitar player.

Pastor Daniel Castle must not be able to read, or listen to the warning that this is NOT for children and is rated M for Mature. Not surprising, he sounds fairly illiterate and ignant (a sate of permanent willful ignorance).
He also must have never heard of sarcasm, how sad for him and those that follow him. I love to watch people get irate over a joke they don't get.
And why is he upset that they eat God's body? Is he just as upset at Catholics that eat and drink Jebus every Sunday? If not, why not?
Thank you Pastor Castle, for giving another shining example of the excellent quality of leadership many Christians enjoy today.

Lord Tywin reveals his knowledge of Arya's ruse - S2E7

Drax says...

I believe Tywin gets a bit peeved at her "Have you met many stone masons, My Lord?" comment because he picks up that she's suggesting he's ignorant of how well educated a typical stone mason may be.

Obviously Tywin's right (and they both know this), nearly all are likely illiterate in their world. What she's actually doing is getting defensive about her father (for obvious reason that aren't known to Tywin. (She's protective of his memory)). He only knows she was taking a subtle stab at him in her (late) father's defense.

Bill Maher Discusses Boston Bombing and Islam

RedSky says...

Maher's channelling an alternate dimension left wing O'Reilly here.

The issue here though is that most religions have been interpreted radically at one point or another in time as Levin mentions. Certainly both Christianity and Islam have sufficient sections in their religious books that can be interpreted to incite extremist violence.

Islam being in the spotlight for its radicals has more to do with the social development / HDI measures of majority Muslim dominated countries. As Levin mentions, Islam can also be a façade or rationale for violence in the name of nationalist causes or as a reaction to oppression.

In many cases the Qur'an is irrelevant as those recruited, especially in lower developed countries in the Middle East can be illiterate and ultimately rely on an imam for any and all religious guidance.

If you go to liveleak link and click "Get Embed Code"

it should popup the code to copy and paste

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.liveleak.com/ll_embed?f=5ea08505836a" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Dunno if that will work, I'm not sure about a lot of the embed codes, but that should work.

I know to get the liveleak embed code you just click "Get embed code" under the video and it gives the code to copy and paste.

Thanks.

I am pretty computer illiterate -- when I copy the code noted, the Sift says it is "invalid."

Do you know how to get a good embed out of it?

It's all greek to me....

Either way, thanks.
