How to Pick a Lock With Hairpins

rayok says...

I worked with a locksmith for about 18 months as part of a senior highschool job study thing. The way he taught to pick a lock wasn't so complicated. You just apply rotational force just like in the video except instead of going at the pins one-by-one you "rake" the pins quickly a few times and it eventually open. Raking is moving the tool from back to forward while keeping a slight upward pressure. I think this is how the electronic ones work as well.

It Doesn't Get Better

I'm sadly agreed. Bullies don't categorically fall flat after highschool. This just feels more like the way we wish the world was, and not the way it really is. A certain amount of selfishness and meanness actually works to a person's benefit in many situations, doubly so if they are clever enough. Sure, some of the bullies from high school will end up as dead beat nobodies, but so will the kids bullied and teased into depression. I fear messages like this aren't about solving the problem, but about trying to cheer up the victims. I'd vote for cheering them up with the reality that they can still succeed and triumph in spite of the bullying rather than the falsehoods and wishes that any half aware high schooler is going to see through and feel no better for.

I'm not sure, but that bully could probably get a cushy job in middle management somewhere.

Bullies do fairly well in those positions.

Oppressed Majority

artician says...

Every male I was around in gradeschool, junior-high, and highschool acted like this. It shaped a very embarrassing portion of my self that was only erased when I reached college and realized it wasn't how people should be if we want everyone to live the life of freedom that we hope to.

I was going to say how no one I know ever went so far as to rape a person, but even that's not true considering the unchaperoned "party" my friend and I had at his house with two girls, where which I left at sunset for dinner because "my parents would get mad at me", and I later learned that the two girls and he got drunk on his parents liquor after I left, and one of them later pressed charges that he'd raped her that night.

I don't say this lightly, it's something I remembered just now, and is clearly a memory I have fought to push out of my mind. It's not a fear of guilt, I bear that very much, as much as it's the first of many encounters a really naive young man had with how terrible sexuality can be between the established genders in our society. I believe this happened when we were in the 6th grade.

I'm very thankful today that I am as pro-equality as I am, and that I never committed any mistakes nearly so heinous as that. That said, I understand the film is a compilation of all the worst-case-scenarios in a woman's day to day life, and you should view it understanding that, but where I come from, and understanding how there are such extremely concentrated pockets of ignorant society along these lines, know that there are very many people out there who act this way.

I got out; passed the "small-town-test", but knowing the adults I knew when I was growing up, and that nearly none of my schoolmates from that era ever moved from home or had any higher education, I know that those who stayed there continue to act that way 20+ years on, so in the end this video is not inaccurate.

I don't meet dudes who act like any of this. I must hang out in educated circles of civil people. WHo is this made for?

DOOM (Original DOS Version) Episode 1: Knee-Deep In The Dead

00Scud00 says...

I've been fragging ever since Doom and I haven't killed anybody yet. The bigger miracle is having gone through middle and highschool and not murdering anyone.
The handling of weapons? Yeah, I can see a bunch of kids wondering how you run around at 40mph with a chaingun held directly in front of your chest.
Also I did fire up Doom again lately using GZDoom and the Brutal Doom mod, and it's pure awesome.

Kick ass 2 red band trailer

Hit-Girl doesn't look like a cute little innocent girl anymore. Now she's just a teenager...(with budding sex appeal?) It doesn't have that surprise factor from the 1st movie.
And Kick-Ass is STILL in highschool?

"Cult" Prank Fail At Trying To Scare The Pizza Delivery Guy.

artician says...

I delivered pizza in highschool. One day I got the wrong address in an apartment complex (wrong side of the right building), and I opened the door to two guys sitting on a couch, weighing out *at least* a pound of weed on the coffee table.

Wrong address.

Sorry.

VICE: Getting High Injecting Snake Venom

artician says...

I dont know if he's pretentious. I've never heard about him until this. Maybe he preaches in his own circles.
You can't deny the results, assuming the photos shown and the ages he said he was at the time, the guy doesn't look a day older than 28. Maybe he dyes his hair?
Either way, probably everyones first reaction to things like this is "how stupid can one person be?", but you can't deny that human beings have the intelligence (even when dropping out of highschool, apparently) to explore fatal circumstances and learn from them. I could see a well-educated scientist studying venom all his life, and dying from the first attempted injection, so who really knows.
Either way, it's interesting, and I'll certainly be keeping my ear to the ground for news of his death.

"Gone, Gone, Gone" - (Rhode Island Teacher Says "I Quit!")

@rebuilder

There's very good data showing test scores correlate with all socially valued outcomes.

That includes professional development, health outcomes (managing our personal health in the 21st century is complicated), lower divorce rates, lower rates of out-of-wedlock births, lower crime rates, etc.

I agree, however, that school is mostly useless. I encourage young people to get their highschool equivalency at age 12-16. Get a 4 year degree if you absolutely must, but do it as fast as possible. Aim to move to a tech hub like Silicon Valley or Austin, Texas to become a programmer, designer, marketer, bizdev guy etc.

16 year old athlete breaks world record

Velocity5 says...

@SDGundamX, Yes, she would of course be happier in a great career.

The tools to do that shouldn't be restricted to a small minority. We should want her to become an intellectual and grow over time in a challenging career.
>> ^SDGundamX:

Right.
Clearly she should be more like you--surfing the Internet and making judgmental pronouncements about people's lives based on what you've seen of them in a three-minute news clip. That'll be immensely "useful to humankind."
>> ^Velocity5:
@Trancecoach @Asmo @Gallowflak
"Not every pursuit needs to have some great utility."
We're really just talking about Disney's The Grasshopper and the Ants, based on Aesop's ancient parable.
She doesn't realize that in merely 10 years at her highschool reunion, as their youthful charm will have started to fade, the people who strove to build awesome, challenging careers will be the ones who have grown the most personally and intellectually.
Encouraging people to do "whatever they want" lays waste to what could have been great lives. Encourage them instead to build lives that are useful to humankind, in which they grow more and more every year.
