General Mark Milley hits back at uproar over critical race..

electric bill has soared after the winter storm in texas

newtboy jokingly says...

And now again...Texas can't deliver power in extreme weather....the kind they always have. I wonder how many will die this time. It's impossible to live in Texas without AC for most people under normal temperatures, and outright deadly during heat waves.

The stars at night, are big and bright,
Deep in the heart of Texas,
It could be 'cause, they don't have lights,
Deep in the heart of Texas

As a side note, estimates are as high as 700 who died in Texas from lack of power, in California that number is 1, and that man died 12 minutes after losing power, he didn't slowly freeze to death.

Prison Heat: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

spawnflagger says...

So do these same prisons not have heat in the winter?

it's not like they have to set the thermostat to 72F... even set to 85F will prevent people from heat stroke.

at a bare minimum, should be at least 1 housing section that has AC for any of those prisoners who have the mentioned high-risk medical conditions.

How Road Barriers Stopped Killing Drivers

newtboy says...

The technical term is a rear crash attenuator.
I worked for a friend with a patent on foam cured carbon fiber manufacturing, using the heat and pressure of an expanding foam core to cure the carbon fiber without vacuum bagging or autoclaving....I helped with designing, and personally designed and built the molds, and built a number of test attenuators meant to replace the huge yellow plastic boxes on cal trans trucks. Basically an approximately 3x4x6' carbon fiber box with a dense foam core containing multiple tuned air chambers. We had to tune the chambers to stop vehicles at 60 mph without exceeding certain g forces. In the end, he lost the contract, but not because the device didn't work, I think it was too expensive, and my friend was not a great businessman. Ours was far lighter than the plastic versions, and was meant to pay for itself in fuel savings hauling it around.

It was quick, but I'm pretty sure 11:56 answers a question I'd had for years, but never actually bothered to look up. Every so often I'd see a parked highway dept vehicle with a big, fairly flat object lowered to a horizontal position behind it. Barrier makes *way* more sense than any of the hypotheses I'd imagined.

I'm an Apple hater. I hate its business practice, greed that's way above and beyond the norm, hubris, closed eco-system, terrible OS, dumb/outdated design (but marketed to shit as "intuitive/elegant") on and on I can go, but one thing I can't fairly hate is its hardware build and material.

I don't see much wrong (other than "not optimal") with the heat sink/fan distance here. The way the fins are aligned do allow air flow to direct to the fan. Takes a fraction of a second to generate the wind tunnel effect, and all the components between the fan & heatsink just need to be able to withstand the heat, and they surely do.

It's easy to see why they do it. That's "height". Apple want to make the Air as thin as possible, they can't do that by stacking 4 components together.

How Many Slaps Does it Take to Cook a Chicken?

moonsammy says...

I mean, it seemed pretty obvious that there was no way this would work. But I absolutely appreciate the thorough real-world proving of it.

I think the main operative failure here is that any slapping implement will be cooled by the air for most of its cycle. So there will be an upper bound after which the air-chilled surface of the "slapper" will cool the chicken by an amount equal to the friction-induced heating effect. Even if the high speed didn't destroy the machine or the meat, the air temp would make the effort impossible.

Rudy Giuliani's hair dye drips down his face

Pedotrump

newtboy says...

His personal lack of planning, lack of concern, and total ineptitude caused it. Because he isn't a leader, he shirks responsibility, but the responsibility is his, personally.

And he did it again, 17 more of you chumps were hospitalized for heat stroke/exhaustion after another super spreader rally yesterday. When fire trucks and paramedics showed up to help the people collapsed on the ground, Trump actually suggested they might be the enemy attacking his crowd, saying "lets find out if they're friend or foe, and if they're foe let's take care of this", telling the crowd to attack the first responders who were trying to save their lives if they suspect they might be non cultists... he's so incredibly clueless and irresponsible, and he doesn't care if you die as long as you vote for him first.

How many have had to be hospitalized after Biden rallies? ZERO.

At this point, it's a certainty that his Petri dish events have killed at least hundreds by infecting thousands, in every state he visits there's a corresponding massive spike in cases and deaths a week or so later, contact traced back to his rallies every time. This is forcing new lockdowns and has already overrun the medical system in many areas.

Side note, he's socialistically dumping the problems on the first responders in the areas too, having made no plans or contingencies for these foreseeable fiascos, costing the local towns tens of thousands to millions in unrecoverable tax dollars to clean up his messes, and he still hasn't even paid for his rallies from 2016 in most cases, costing dozens of cities millions each for events he put on with the agreement to pay for them, agreements he consistently welches on.

As for his idiotic herd immunity plan guaranteed to kill at least 8 million Americans and likely to kill more like 50-75 million thanks to a total overrun of the medical system causing a lack of treatment for most, virologists have determined the immunity it might give the population wouldn't last one year before the virus mutates enough to reinfect everyone, starting the pandemic cycle over.

Now to continue the volcanology lesson, lahar .
I'll save you the trip to Google, volcanic floods usually caused by glacial melt from the heat of eruptions, which makes a super abrasive slurry flood that's essentially wet concrete made of volcanic dust, pumice, and trees...and often people.

Professor Brian Harvey On Why Not To Cheat

Mordhaus says...

Humans have been using drugs since the first person ate the wrong plant and got high instead of dying.

If you look at most drugs in nature, it is almost impossible to OD on them IN THEIR NATURAL FORM.

It's only when we alter that using chemicals, heat, or modifying the plant's genetic code via cross-pollination that we get drugs that destroy people.

Conversely, drugs that have been distilled from natural sources have also saved millions from death or from chemical imbalances in their bodies.

Man made drugs keep me on a (mostly) even keel. Without them my life is hell. Not from addiction, but because my body's chemicals are out of whack.

Yet some man made drugs are poison and should not be used (or extremely rarely). Most opioids fall directly into that category. Still, it is the corporate greed and misuse of these drugs that make them an ignored epidemic.

I could go on, but TL;DR

Natural drugs are a gift to humankind. Man Made drugs are a mixed bag.

Man charged after violently slapping Burger King employee

moonsammy says...

"TMZ reported that 21-year-old Austin Addison, was charged with harassment, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief."

Uhh... which of those covers the slap? Did they miss the slap?

Edit: And the problem is the nuggets were too spicy?!?! Show me the BK menu item that's legitimately actually spicy. Seriously, if it exists I want to know about it, as fast food "spicy" is generally barely medium heat.

Edit2: Another video indicated that the actual problem was this dude didn't get the right number of nuggets. This makes more sense to me, as he references robbery.
