Critical Race Theory: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

luxintenebris jokingly says...

gave this some thought...if teachers can't teach 'uncomfortable' history, then they'd have to steer away from all the Americans that experienced some form of xenophobia, bias, or bigotry during their times...

shortlist;

- Germans
- Italians
- Irish
- Japanese
- Chinese
- Hawaiians
- native Americans
- African Americans

...and more.*

so it's more a wish than honesty.

how can they give an accounting of any president's administration or trials during their terms? trail of tears, teapot dome, watergate, iran-contra...presidents sleeping w/women not their wives - and even one w/their wife but still adulterous.

but if those who don't want to know can do what the rest of the people in my h.s. did: ignore it and squeak by. then they can qualify to be Republicans.

(btw: wasn't "truth matters: not your tears" a popular refrain recently?)

sure. sometimes i don't want to know...but that should be MY choice and not YOUR'S.

*if i missed your group, it was on purpose. less spoken, better said (satire)

Meet The Native Hawaiians Fighting U.S. Occupation

newtboy says...

*doublepromote
The invasions and cultural genocides we inflicted on natives are two of America's greatest national crimes. I could fully support giving back the undeveloped private island of Niihau and barely developed Molokai to a native Hawaiian nation. I had no idea there was a movement to regain sovereignty.

Lady Berates Lyft Driver Over Hawaiian Bobblehead Doll

poolcleaner says...

I fail to see how the depiction of the luna dance is offensive to Hawaiians. I wonder if she would be offended by my DVD copy of Lilo & Stitch? Or my wife's Lilo bobblehead.

Some history: Protestants banned hula in the 19th century, so the celebration of this traditional dance seems to me to be empowering versus the censorship of what the Protestants called "heathen". Sure, the introduction of the Portuguese ukulele and other Western aesthetics changed the art form, but it's practiced in both modern and traditional forms today.

You also can't simply demonize the cross-pollination of cultures, because cultural values are always changing. Hawaiian and Polynesian culture went through many changes and forms long before anyone from the West showed up on their shores. The luau itself is partly symbolic of women's rights (as well as lower class rights) in Hawaiian culture, as before the luau, women were not allowed to eat the same food as men, and commoners could not eat with royalty or eat their royal Hawaiian food.

This change didn't happen until the 1800s, so it's likely that this level of equality within the Hawaiian culture is due in part to European contact, including the the King who himself became a Christian -- and yet also encouraged the luna dance.

When cultures make contact with each other, they become entangled. They influenced us and we influenced them -- and they're Americans now so deal with it. I once had pictures of Italian Americans on my wall (Godfather/Scarface posters) and my grandma has a Jew on her crucifix. Neither of us are Italian or Jewish. LOL

Streep and Kidman discuss their childhood names

There's nothing quite like the look on a woman's face right as she finds out her cross-species Hawaiian birth twin was the victim of fratricide. Where is Cartman to collect these unique tears?

White Party - A Lesson in Cultural Appropriation

newtboy says...

So wait...am I racist because I had a Hawaii themed party last year? Am I sexist because I and other men there wore flower pattern skirts and coconut bras? We played native Hawaiian music, but no one tried to Hula...I was afraid we'd get it wrong and anger the volcano.
I also threw a 'white trash' party last year, and built an outhouse and still in my front yard for it. Am I a self hating honkey?

The 'white twitter' thing is weird, because there IS a 'black twitter', isn't there? I hear it reported about all the time.

Neil deGrasse Tyson vs. Conservative Media

lantern53 says...

You can take every person on this planet and put them on one Hawaiian island. Would be crowded.

If the scientific method was being used, then there wouldn't be any scientists who would disbelieve it. But not everyone is together on this. How do you know that volcanoes don't affect the global climate more than humans?

Easybreath snorkling mask

bremnet says...

Everything old is new again... in one of the Gidget movies - I think it was Gidget Goes Hawaiian (or perhaps from the series with Sally Field) there is a scene where Gidge goes snorkeling with a full face mask covering eyes, nose and mouth, and has two snorkel tubes attached directly to the mask coming out the top, with U-bends and floating ball "seals" that block water when you take a dunk. Nothing new, just came around the sun again....

Awesome Haka Face Off by Schoolkids

artician says...

That was pretty amazing.

@tomspeed Hawaii is a lot like that as well. It's especially valuable there since something like 90% of hawaiian inhabitants aren't of hawaiian descent (a mix of American, Asian and South-Pacific Islanders), but their culture is kept alive by tradition and respect for their history.
I love culture. I have to go research this now because I don't know anything about it, but I should would have appreciated it if it were part of my youth.
