Tabs v(ersu)s Spaces from Silicon Valley S3E6

Buttle says...

In my experience as a working programmer, tabs v spaces is a question of editor configuration, not typing. So, no, I don't believe he could hear it.

Conforming to the local convention on tabs v spaces isn't being anal, it's showing you want to keep your job. In particular, throwing in tabs where they are not expected results in unreadable hash.

MilkmanDan said:

I thought it was pretty clear in the show that he knew she was using spaces instead of tabs because of the sound of her repeatedly hitting the spacebar at the beginning of each line (which depending in your editor/IDE might be done automatically).

They are in a small environment, (loosely?) collaborating on code. He's anal about tabs vs spaces, and can tell that she's using the "wrong" one because of the repetitive (and annoying from his perspective) sound.

Put programmers together in a confined space, and they'll grate on each other over style issues / noise levels / music / whatever. I find the show extremely accurate in portraying the general atmosphere or feel of software development, if occasionally accenting or misportraying some details in the interest of making it good TV.

Bernie Sanders shows support for aims of Jeremy Corbyn

dannym3141 says...

There are some that suggest May or the tories in general are trying to lose the election so that Labour WILL take the backlash. Ultimately no way to know how that will go, but right now there is severe backlash towards the tories and the narrative is swiftly changing towards Labour. I see an election win as the start of a very, very long conversation. Activists will have to continue the fight, press standards will have to be changed either through public pressure or through legislature. And in Britain that might happen because the press here are the most distrusted in europe (52% disapproval, or 52% considered biased/corrupt, or something).

I said in the past that the UK was ready to change. Essentially, the narrative was there to be taken right back, but I didn't know if Corbyn's team had the skill to do it. I have to say that I am blown away by Labour's campaign, it has been almost flawless. I say that because i think the narrative is there to be taken on Brexit. The tories called the referendum to hold onto power. They arrogantly called the general election to consolidate power, with Brexit talks imminent, only to whine about being too busy to do interviews because they're thinking about Brexit! They have then made a catastrophic hash of their campaign, u-turned 5 or 6 times, contradicted themselves, and generally shown themselves to be weak, without answers, and bullies. In 10 years time, who knows what we will think? But in the short term at least, this can be framed as a "they fucked it up, but we'll take over in a crisis and try to fix it."

At the end of the day, a Corbyn government has always been so out of the question that i don't know what to expect if that were to happen. Is another referendum on leaving out of the question?

At the very least, for now, i would say Brits prefer the idea of Labour sorting out Brexit than the Tories, and the average attitude towards Brexit in the country is rather one of resigned acceptance - we know it's bad, but we did it, so now we better get on with it. But we're very suspicious, and don't want to get shafted by irresponsible or reckless politicians. True for the left and right, but obviously for different reasons.

As much as I'd love to see Corbyn's Labour win the election, it depresses me to think how the nightmare that is Brexit would then have to be "managed" by them. In the end, the inevitable disaster might very well be laid at Labour's feet by the press, thereby discrediting Corbyn's policies for years to come.

Or does anyone see any way Brexit could be done that does not end in disaster? From where I'm standing, it's a five-year process in the best of times, yet neither are these the best of times, nor have the Tories done anything of substance in the time since the referendum. In fact, they don't even seem to be aware of what enormous undertaking these kinds of negotations are. Judging by the "leaks" from Juncker's meeting with May, she seemed completely unprepared, even delusional and misinformed about the process.

Susan Sarandon Broke Up With Hillary

newtboy says...

These Hillary people now just ignore all her hypocritical flip flopping, never ending pandering, and bribes from billionaires and corporations and claim she's the 'better candidate'....Delusional morons ignoring fraud, bribes, a complete lack of consistency ("I supported $15 an hour...My plan is to raise minimum wages to $12 an hour...I support $15 an hour"), illegal fundraising collusion with the DNC, and a likely indictment on multiple counts right before the election (improper or not), and add to that the second worst 'likeability' rating ever to the list of things that must be ignored to make her palatable and a total lack of support among independents, and yet they're still assuming that people that support an honest candidate will just support her...that's just plain retarded...we won't.
Clinton as the nominee means Trump as president.

EDIT: If Bernie can really get Warren to run as his VP, he might still take the win outright. I really wish they had gotten together and hashed that out long ago, we could be working on the general election by now.
I also really wish they would both run as independents, not beholding to either party, since neither major party represents the people anymore.

Breakfast. Take it. Or leave it.

shagen454 says...

Yeah, I hardly ate breakfast for a decade just because I didn't have the time between crunching sleep and getting to work, then my metabolism just evolved.

I think this is the reason that eggs. sausage, hash browns, bacon & toast make me excited since rarely have the time to eat em.

Elizabeth warren-we have a problem and that problem is money

LukinStone says...

I don't necessarily disagree with you, and I don't think your commentary negates Warren's point. And certainly, comments discussions are a good place for hashing out ideas and clarifying points. This wasn't my goal with my earlier comment. I just thought it was a powerful moment and a good soundbite from a larger, poignant speech.

It's not so much that they lack the 'spine' as it is they lack any incentive to do so. If they do nothing, they get handed millions with no repercussions. If they work to remove the influence, they start an unwinnable 'war' with all those 'donors' and all their colleagues, effectively ending their careers and the handouts for nothing.
We should have Federal ballot initiatives, maybe requiring a 2/3 vote to pass, so the people could take some control back of congress and stop allowing them to make the rules they have to play by, and stop allowing them to police themselves as well. It's no surprise that an organization that only answers to itself is corrupt, and the people have not held a Federal politician to task for accepting bribes in decades...that I know of.

So yes, they have many workable ideas on how to solve the problems, but all of those ideas are against their own interests until we change the system.

Pro-Segregation Texas Teacher Surprisingly NOT Racist

newtboy says...

It's a good thing she told us she's not racist, or we might have gotten the wrong idea.
Now, if only the rest of these people that LOOK and ACT racist would tell us they aren't, racism would be over.
Then we can just wait and hope that cops will tell us how they aren't bullies, thieves, or murderers and we can all relax knowing they're just there to help us and only appear to be acting criminally because of my skewed, ignorant, liberal bias, and not when viewed through a rational examination of their actions.
Then we can move on to politicians hash tagging their lack of influence peddling, underhanded backroom dealing, and selling of our government to the highest bidder.
It's sure going to be nice to have these issues resolved.

RFC: VS6 Sidebar Suggestions (Sift Talk Post)

enoch says...

just an idea here @lucky760,which i suspect many long time users may not even consider, because it is old news to them, but is there a way to expose top videos from years ago?

i am not suggesting re-hashing a related/suggested tag but actually making a spot for top voted sifts, which from years ago could hit 300+ votes.

follow my logic here:
IF the purpose of all this time and energy you are putting in to revamp the sift to a more sleek and user-friendly (which means phones and tablets,to the chagrin of us neanderthal PC users) in order to attract new users, doesn't it make sense to reveal the wonderful content that started this site?

the sift has become more than just a voter-based community, categorizing quality videos.
it has become an archive.
so many sifters from years ago submitted some amazing content just when videos were becoming popular.the birth of the youtube generation and we were there, and youtube was not the juggernaut it is now.

you had to really put some time into finding decent videos, using multiple sites.the results from all that time and energy were spectacular though and i think new users would be just as enthralled as we were back then.

so instead of cluttering up the front page with list after list,maybe..possibly..we could add the lists as a single link.

so if someone already familiar with the sift could click the top 15 link and be directed there.
this would satisfy sifters like @dannym3141 and i suspect a majority of others.

you could do the same with related/suggested and more videos from=sifter name here.

this would work on two levels:
1.new users would be exposed to some of the most amazing content that they had never been exposed to before.
2.many of those older videos are now defunct, giving current sifters an opportunity to undead that video, therefore retaining the integrity of the video archive and upholding our *quality status.

all-time sifts
legendary sifts
tales from the archive crypt

just some ideas what to title the link.

what say you?
