Horrific Multi-Car Freeway Wreck - Los Angeles

eoe says...

I understand people don't like being good samaritans by default, but it would have been smart (and nice) to just leave your car in front of the cars with your emergency lights on and just wait at the side of the road. Even better if it's a big rig or a large truck. You'd likely prevent more cars piling up for the price of your patience and time. And, depending on how good you are at Frogger, your safety.

Colorado Blizzard Aftermath - Woodmen Road Dashcam Footage

TheFreak says...

In the case of this storm, 100's of people were still stranded in their cars the next day. People stuck in their vehicles after Colorado storms are often picked up by emergency vehicles, national guard, good samaritans, etc. Most people in Colorado also carry emergency supplies in their car in case they get stuck like this.

I don't even know what's going on here. It was a cyclone with really high winds but only like a foot of snow. Not really a blizzard. It looks like a lot of those cars drove off the road when there was zero visibility and then got stuck. The rest are probably stuck because sudden ice made the roads impassable.

That storm started with reasonably warm weather and rain, then a sudden (SUDDEN!) drop in temperature and high winds. I think below that thin layer of snow was undrivable ice.

So what happened to all the people who were in those cars? Seems like it is in the middle of nowhere.

Lazy Nashville Police Fatally Shoot Black Man

Please. The Cartmanesque mental gymnastics you're doing are professional level.

No one said running is legal or right, I noted how it's understandable given the likely outcome of being detained, guilty or not. I also noted how deadly force is not an acceptable response to fleeing. It's far from the only option. Edit: I also noted that, if one is responsible for other people's overreaction that goes both ways, and they would be responsible for the outcome of not fleeing.....including false charges, beatings, and death.

Yes, if they, and other officers, and good Samaritan bystanders, and helicopters, and the radio can't catch up, and they aren't posing an ongoing significant threat of death or serious bodily harm to the officer or others, the answer isn't shoot them in the back, it is
Let
Them
Go.

See, you're wrong again, I could say it. ;-) Not only that, the law says it too.
The answer you seem to want is "go ahead and kill them if they won't comply", that's immoral and illegal and completely ignores the reality of what happens to many innocent people when they do comply.

Okay - So help me understand - If a police officer tells you to freeze, and you run, that's a perfectly okay response, and the officer should let you do so?

I'm not trying to be a smart ass, but what is "any" officer's response supposed to be, if they can't catch up - just let them go?
Because if that's the new rule, why would anyone ever stop when running means a free ticket?

I mean this sincerely. What is an officer supposed to do in this situation? And you can't say, let him go....

One lucky truck driver

To my recollection, China has NO good samaritan law. If you get involved in someone else's accidental injury, you can be sued and often are (no insurance network). The Communists utterly destroyed Confucianism and left only a vestige of interest in the self.

No, no, this "non-Samaritan" attitude goes back centuries. It has nothing to do with modern notions of liability.

The Chinese culture is very different from Western culture. "Saving face" isn't a light topic there. Suicide to save the family's honor has been part of their culture, hasn't it? I'm not that well versed in the differences of the various Asian cultures.

Hari kiri is the Japanese equivalent, yeah? The most honorable way to die is to disembowel yourself with no assistance. Most chose to have a trusted relative or friend behead them so they died quickly -- after stabbing themselves in the gut. I learned all this from Hollywood movies and novels -- so maybe it is all a load of crap.

So I"m sticking with my plausible interpretation that it is POSSIBLE that this was orchestrated by the government. Maybe it was just the government taking advantage of a true kind impulse on the part of the taxi driver -- but they do control the media still, yeah?

Cynical. That's me!

damn, you are cynical!!! It's sad that some of the bad infrastructure in china make this story perfectly plausible.

I think this attitude has to do with the ease of liability being assigned to the helper. In this case, there is no way any reasonable person would think the cab driver was responsible for the girl's injury. As opposed to a driver stopping for an injured pedestrian.>> ^bareboards2:

Here's another topic missed by this video --
Remember when that little girl got ran over by a truck and everyone walked by? The only person who went to help was a very poor woman?
Apparently there is a culture in China of NOT helping others. What I read at the time was if you help someone, then you become responsible for them. Which is why only the very poor woman went to help -- she had nothing to lose.
The Chinese government has been attempting to change that culture, in part by changing laws (I think. Didn't I read that somewhere?)
Here is how calloused I have become -- I thought for a moment (and I still sort of do) that this was a set up by the Government. A visual campaign to educate the public. They made the guy a hero, showed how the government has the services to help. The hole in the pavement was too weird, as noted here, people crowded around the hole with zero concern that more would give way. They didn't interview the girl at all, didn't show her face.
It's not a bad thing, to attempt to create a Good Samaritan culture in the face of thousands of years without one. I am just cynical about the feel-goodness of this clip.
Calloused. I am calloused.

Outcry in China over hit-and-run toddler left in street

actually, the good samaritan part happened IN taiwan. i have been living in the PRC and ROC for going on 20 years. of course, the roc is a better place to live... there's no question. it's simply that there are blatant similarities that make this particular video heartbreaking for all of us and symptomatic of chinese culture specifically.

there's universal health care (as you would assume), and then there's universal health care (which you might never suspect)... the latter is what taiwan has. i've commented on it here on the sift in the past, so i'll just link you to the the anecdote in question:
