Kirsten Schaal on The Daily Show - Big Mouth Billie Vagina

spoco2 says...

@marbles... shit then, better keep kids away from Parmesan cheese, or Mussels or Spinach you don't want them to die from Aluminium poisoning do you?

Also, don't let them ever eat Ice Cream, fuck no! They'll die from the polysorbate 80.

And come on... sodium borate, it's used as a food preservative in many countries, and is ONLY dangerous when ingested in high quantities for long periods of time... like, 5-10 years long.

Sorry, but your bullshit scaremongering, ill thought out crap doesn't cut it, it makes no sense, it does not gel with reality. You can find dangerous substances in pretty much anything you eat or drink. It's all about quantities and timeframes. Also, things that CAN be dangerous in situation A can be beneficial in situation B.

But hey... continue siding with idiots like Jenny McCarthy who have contributed to the deaths of kids... you keep on with that.

You misunderstand, QM. I didn't post to mock. I truly am curious if this would be appealing to our staunch libertarians on the Sift.

I thought those comments I posted were amusing. I don't think it will work for a host of reasons, but I am more interested in how it MIGHT work and if someone else sees the same possible flaws as I do.

For example... domestic workers. Probably can't afford to get out there on their own. Most likely can't afford to leave on their own. So once they are there... what protections? Any? Should there be? What if they lose their job? Caveat emptor -- don't go unless you can get yourself home?

All is fine and well if you are wealthy. What happens if you aren't? Because there is no welfare, there are no regulations, right?

But I'm not interested in what I think -- what do others think?

"A pirate's dream: a static object in international waters with a very high concentration of very wealthy people. Good luck with all that!"
It's a pirates dream until they realize the entire island is armed, and instead of water hoses peeing down from cargo ships they're being sprayed with napalm gel from flamethrowers. Yo ho ho!

Now Boards, you asked this question with the intent to mock the concept, and that's your right. Forget pirates, if The Island worked the federal mafia would move the Navy in the next night in the name of 'fighting global warming' or some scam.

I think the main, and most important point to the whole film is the realization of "It's not my story, it's your story".

Everyone lives their lives dealing with their problems and their situations. At which point do we realize that we are just pawns in someone else's story?

Now you can look at this movie as a lot of drivel as a lot of movies can be. I suppose it's all in how your life translates it. A friend of mine, a comic book illustrator and artist was blown away with it. His life just turned a corner instantly. Not only did the "Cool" factor click with him, he changed his outlook on life.

He instantly realized how many other lives were going on around him and how entrenched in those peoples stories he was. He had the profound realization that, understanding his life had recently took a crappy turn, he could remove himself from HIS story and change to be the force that changes other people's stories. Very empowering.

Of course, this style of movie is not for everyone. Some people just like Michael Bay. Some people like a story to be wrapped up and packaged with a ribbon-and-bow so they can go home and not put anymore thought into it knowing that the good guys won, the bad guys are in jail and the sun will come up tomorrow.

I prefer to receive a bunch of input which I can let gel in my brain and then apply to real occurrences in my life. I like to read into it and find more than what was presented. Join in the Mythology and look beyond the gimmicks used to tell the story. Using Ultra cool imagery and fantasy ideas helps to launch me into that realm and let my imagination run with the possibilities.

But that's just me.

Portal 2 (Videogames Talk Post)

AnimalsForCrackers says...

In regards to Crosswords wondering if there's more than one way to solve the puzzles in Portal 2, I'd say yes, but not to the same degree as the first game in my experience (played the single-player 3 times now). Many test chambers require one specific solution with not much room for creative puzzle solving, well, besides the trial and error process of figuring a puzzle out; it seems that the introduction of all these new mechanics (the three kinds of gel, hard-light walkways, forward/backward tractor beams, faith plates, etc.) cumulatively make for much more specific solutions with less room for player delineation from the designer's intended sequence of events to complete them. So, the instances of forging your own path are there, just not as abundant as in the original. The puzzles themselves are varied enough to make repeat playthroughs still enjoyable, imo. The fantastic sense of atmosphere and thoughtful level/sound design, writing, and story also help.

I haven't played the co-op yet, so no clue on that front.

About the DLC stuff, it seems likely Valve will soon release more level packs, hopefully free. It would make no sense to spend dev resources making paid hats/gestures/doo-hickies if all there is to enjoy them in is the out-of-the-box coop campaign. It would be a smart move to counterbalance paid, non-vital cosmetic stuff with more meaty-but-free maps to ensure a vital and thriving community, a less disgruntled one at that. Valve is usually good about making the essential stuff free, and the paid optional stuff at least theoretically attainable through other means (if TF2 is any indication, also Portal 2 hats/gestures are able to be Found by playing/achievements a la TF2, not sure to what capacity though).

Some advanced chambers of the single-player stuff and a Challenge mode would be nice too. But I digress, we'll see which direction Valve takes it soon enough! Just an already happy customer thinking out loud about how Valve could make it even betterer than it already is.

Miniature crossbow looks deadly!

brycewi19 says...

I'd actually like to see how it would affect ballistic gel or perhaps a pig carcass.

Sure, it pops balloons, but how "deadly" is it if it can't penetrate skin effectively.

Perhaps I'm watching too much Mythbusters lately.

Should we distinguish between NSFW videos vs. GRAPHIC videos? A vote to... (User Poll by blankfist)

RedSky says...

I almost feel like you'd be better off scraping NSFW altogether and having three icons for:

1. graphic/violence

2. language

3. nudity/sexuality

They'd be intuitive to the Videosift layman, more informative that what we have now, and are very easily interpretable with the kind of cartoon/symbol icons that TV ratings use. Thematically it would also gel with a video/clip site much better.

KnivesOut says...

Humorous, but poorly scripted, and not very well executed. No chemistry between the actors whatsoever.

I just had a difficult time feeling any emotion for the character "Steve". Maybe the actor just couldn't find his motivation, or perhaps the director didn't evoke the best possible performance, but either way, I think they should try some more takes and see if they can get the cast to gel better.

From their website:

What are they made of? Can you eat them or chew on them to make them explode? If so, will the water taste funny?
A: Spitballs are made of polymer. You could bite/chew one to make it explode but they should not be eaten. We haven't tasted one or the water we grew them in. We prefer fresh, clean drinking water.

I don't know what "polymer" is. Maybe silica gel?
