VideoSift v6 (VS6) Beta Video Page (Sift Talk Post)

mxxcon says...

Everything below is my personal opinion:
Putting Light/Dark, Font Size into the footer is bad usability.
You expect people with poor eye-sight to scroll past all the text they can't read to randomly stumble on those rather small buttons.

Unless I really care about the topic, if a video has more than a couple of comments I usually don't bother scrolling all the way down. So putting any 'usability'/customization features down there would make them undiscoverable for many users.

Are channels and tags going away or just not implemented yet?

VideoSift v6 (VS6) Beta Video Page (Sift Talk Post)

The font seems to still be a problem when its regular size its to small. http://videosift.com/video/Police-State-Too-Much-Send-in-a-Marine#comment-1846349
-edit- small issue all better,thanks

When a comment gets votes and increase font size the letters spread to far apart. Looks a mess. http://videosift.com/video/Police-State-Too-Much-Send-in-a-Marine#comment-1846085

Also prefer the old font on top of size and spacing issues. Just easier on the eyes(reading wise).

@blackfox42 - Fixed that link to opt back in, so it should work for you now.

@Baristan - That sounds good in theory (and I thought so in the distant past), but in practice it makes the site effectively unusable.

@eric3579 - I know there are lots of things you (and others) were bound to have issues with. As I explained in my dissertation, that's part of the point of doing this, to hear from you all what's wrong or what's missing or what should change. For example, being unable to click a menu tab to actually go somewhere can be fixed by adding a link in the sub-menu (or something).

To you and @newtboy, a big point about all the new header content is that you can now see all that information and even more all in that one area without searching all over the page for it.

Good feedback about the font. I've changed it and I think it's much better.

The video voters and who's viewing are currently excluded, but (yet again), that's part of the point of this beta test. If everyone feels they need to be added back in, then we (meaning dag and myself or us all as a community) can consider how we should include those things. (If/when they're added back in, it'll only be for logged-in members.)

@newtboy - Not everything everyone is noticing is intended to be that way. The indication that you voted on a comment wasn't supposed to be missing. And it's fixed now.

The opt out link is in the footer of the new video page, however to you and everyone else, I'd request and encourage that you stick with the beta test for a couple of days if you can bear it to at the very least try to help us with more, fuller feedback once you've become a little more accustomed to the changes.

Thanks for the feedback so far everyone. Keep it coming.

"Slap Her": Children's Reactions

Lendl says...

Perfectly said. Needs to be meme-framed with fancy fonts.

How about just 'people shouldn't hit/slap other people'?!?

Why must this always be put in a 'men hitting women' scenario? How about women shouldn't slap men either, and men should not slap men, and women should also not slap women. Does it really need to be broken down by sex? I can't imagine why.

It's a simple rule....DON'T HIT OTHERS...except in self defense...or consensual rough sex.

My point is that when people print photographs, or pages with large graphics, this font is saving 0% of 90% page coverage. So my logic is that his contribution to saving actual ink is very small. Plus most of the ink I lose (personally) is because the cartridge dries out over time.

Besides that, the font ONLY makes sense on a printed page, where it looks like a normal font after ink bleeding, etc. On screen, it looks like shit. And can't take advantage of sub-pixel-font-rendering employed by every modern OS on LCD displays.

Jinx said:

It's still a 33% saving on ink though. I don't see how the percentage of the page covered in ink is relevant. By your logic a 100% saving in ink would still "only" be 5% of the page?

I think the point is that there are opportunities to think about improving efficiency in all professions, and that these saving needn't necessarily come at the expense of quality. In fact, the inspiration to create something more efficient may actually lead to a pleasing aesthetic.

Irony: man creates font to save ink. Posts video about it. Millions of people print an unnecessary document to see what it looks like

So, let's all download it and see what we think compared to draft quality. It's free.

Sad man doesn't understand the problem... There are plenty of ways to save ink and use less packaging, but it doesn't matter because the ink/printer companies would just put less in the cartridge. He'd be far better off telling people about toner sensor hacks and refills than creating a hard to read font that strokes his own ego.
