Anyone else want to weigh in on @kymbos request of the Great American Novel? I think Twain' Huckleberry Finn is a must read (I actually reread this story every couple of years and still enjoy it).
What other candidates do people have?>> ^longde:
Huckleberry Finn>> ^kymbos:
I'm reading Chuck Palahniuk's Fight Club, which is a pretty good page turner.
I'm interested in reading some classic American literature if anyone would recommend some for a guy who has never really read any of the classics (like Mark Twain, Hemmingway, Fitzgerald).
I'm green.

I reread Catch 22 every 5 years or so, gets better every time.
edit: oh, not necessarily a classic, though.

Really? Because I couldn't get through it. I thought he just kept hammering the same points over and over and over again until I was bored to tears and stopped (kind of like American Psycho actually, I didn't need any more graphic depictions of murder to get the inanely shallow existence he led).

Pity, as I thought I'd like it. The general premise is good, hell it spawned the extremely common saying... but I was left wanting by the source material itself.

Actually, my personal favorite is Poe. And you could probably read all of the stories I mentioned in the earlier comment in a day or two. But this is about your personal preference. A Connecticut Yankee is cultural satire and is kind of timeless. Sawyer and Finn are coming of age stories - quite good, though a bit dated. They are certainly more often included in American Lit classes.

Look at that - you can read all three (and Poe and others) right here.

In reply to this comment by kymbos:
Gotcha. So you wouldn't start with Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer or something higher profile? I've literally read none of them.

In reply to this comment by jonny:
I meant that even if you don't especially enjoy a classic novel, you haven't completely wasted your time - you're still probably better off for having read it. But yeah, enjoyment of a book - just like music, food, and art - is all about personal taste. I've read very little Russian literature, basically for fear of exactly the same reaction as yourself. (Oddly, though, I did enjoy A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, which is about as depressing and plodding as you can imagine.) If you're not fond of the Russians, there are some Americans you should probably avoid too - Faulkner, Steinbeck and some (not all!) of the other early 20th century writers probably first among them.

I like John Irving for that category - Cider House Rules or World According to Garp.>> ^longde:

@gorillaman There's no real point getting into semantics and legal statures, the point is this is porn written about an old man touching up a boy, the language of the piece itself uses those terms... so I don't care particularly if it's 'legal' or not, it's creepy and smacks an awful lot like child porn.

Oh it's just some words you big baby. Christ next you're gonna start getting all flustered about "Nigger Jim" in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

Now onto the real crux of the matter...you have fucking Voldemort on your show and you don't tackle him and start beating the crap outa him?! I don't get it...people just don't take the defense of our magical world seriously!

Oh, you Finns always manage to thwart us Norwegian's claim to absolute world domination. If you weren't so damn likable I would curse you for it, but I have no choice but to bow down in admiration.

Congratulations!

FPS Russia - Russian Sniper

Sagemind says...

"Imagine my surprise when the mad “Russian” himself strolled into breakfast yesterday. Our favorite IGOTD had shown up at the blogger shoot. I cornered him at the range (where he was wearing muffs and glasses). While he didn’t want any photos or videos taken he agreed to a short interview. After softening him up with some easy questions about the weather, his guns and the intricacies of Baltic cuisine, I asked him a real question: what’s up with the lack of eyes and ears? He responded that he recognized he needed to be wearing PPE and would do so in the future; especially since 20 percent of his viewership is under 18. FPS doesn’t want to set a bad example for the tweens. So, is he Russian? I can definitively report . . .

Nyet!

I was sitting at the breakfast table with ace snapper Oleg Volk. Oleg, a genuine Russian emigre who speak the lingua franca of the old Communist Evil Empire, thought FPS was Russian—because of his lack of safety. So I sent Oleg to speak Russian with FPS.

Oleg reported that FPS couldn’t talk the walk. When I interviewed the Internet phenom he sounded like a good ‘ole southern boy.

And there you have it: a fake Russian playing with really big guns. Except not in his most recent post, which has him paint-balling his little heart out. Good thing Lucky Gunner’s got him back with serious firepower. Dasvidaniya!" - http://thetruthaboutguns.com/2011/05/ryan-finn/confirmed-fps-russia-a-k-a-fpsrussia-isnt-russian/

Bill Maher: D.L. Hughley - "Nigger Upgrade"

Kofi says...

Look it's a public domain book that has been changed by one publisher so that people who find said word too offensive can enjoy the work. It is not an across the board alteration to every copy of Huck Finn sold hence forth. Stupid? Probably. Worthy of attention? No.

"Money For Nothing" Deemed Offensive on Canadadian Radio

gwiz665 says...

This is sort of being blown out of proportion, yes. Lots of places use "radio edits" where words people crap their pants over are just silenced. It's not a new phenomenon, but I guess it's new in Canada, eh?

Now, I don't mean to say that this is a good idea, just that it's been around for a while.

"Standards and Practices" is all bullshit.
>> ^Payback:

Oh PULEEASE! It's deemed offense for PUBLIC AIRPLAY. No one is out confiscating fucking CDs. The use of the word IS pejorative, by the way. He's using it as a demeaning term.
This makes me howl. Down in the States, the clean versions used for YEARS. You want to know what I think is ridiculous censorship? Getting rid of "Nigger Jim" out of Huckleberry Finn. Discuss THAT, not this non-issue.
