Saturday morning cartoons taught you collectivism! (Politics Talk Post)

NetRunner says...

@blankfist, earlier in this thread, you said:

The parent groups are propagandizing cartoons. I don't care for that. It's insidious and disingenuous. The end. Roll credits. Fade out.

You're now saying:

We don't know if he's right or wrong or lying or telling the truth, because to make that assumption is simply speculation. Never was my point to speculate, it was only to present as I read it the facts. I'm not giving evidence that pro-social messages are good or bad in nature, because you cannot prove that by evidence, NR. Those remain political ideas not provable fact.

The facts, however, are as I simply stated multiple times over: this is the writer of the cartoon and he claims he was forced by special interest groups to inject pro-social messages into D&D. That's all I'm asserting.

I'm glad you now feel like you should get some distance from your earlier comment.

Progress!

You are trying to build a straw man from that because you disagree that pro-social messages are bad so you're grasping for any available tactic you can invent to win some sort of pro-Democratic battle.

A little bit of review, a "straw man argument" is when you tear apart an argument your opponent didn't make, and imply this refutes the argument they actually made.

When your opponent changes his position because you tore apart the foundation for it, it's called winning the argument, even if they deny that they ever held their original position.

This is actually a situation where I'm ideologically on the same side as you. I am not taking up the "we should program our children to always bend to the will of the group" side of this argument -- far from it. I'm just saying that the accusation is too grandiose for the evidence presented.

I'm glad you see it my way now.

Now, about the Texas school board...

Saturday morning cartoons taught you collectivism! (Politics Talk Post)

blankfist says...

^Whatever you say. This was a blog entry by a Saturday Morning Cartoon writer who had first person experience of parent groups augmenting the cartoons to further an agenda. I don't care about all the other irrelevant New Deal or Texas school board straw men you're sprinkling throughout.

The parent groups are propagandizing cartoons. I don't care for that. It's insidious and disingenuous. The end. Roll credits. Fade out.

Sir David Attenborough - Why Science Is So Important

ghark says...

Wow he looks really chipper, after making his doco comeback i figured he'd kind of fade out of the public eye as he's getting on now, but he seems as bright and clear-speaking as ever. The argument he brings on the importance of science is also an excellent one, i wonder how many christians use ipods =p

Derren Brown predicts the winning lottery numbers LIVE on TV

L0cky says...

The gif shows the difference in the ball placement just before Derren crosses from the right to the left of the screen and after.

This is how he did it (it's really rather simple despite sounding elaborate):

1. Derren records an intro sequence where he's standing outside and walks into the studio to the television. He waves at a second camera, and there is a cut to it (the only cut in the entire sequence) that shows he is being filmed by a handheld camera. He then waves his hands in the air in an exagerrated gesture.

2. Derren moves out of the way and they then place a completely stationary tripod camera in front of the studio set up and record the whole thing for 10 minutes with no action.

3. When it's almost time to go live Derren stands next to the television with his hands in the air while being broadcast by the stationary tripod camera, watching the monitor for it to cut to him live.

4. A post process shake is applied to the entire live stream to give the illusion that Derren is being filmed by the handheld camera. It's important to remember that he's not, it is the static camera on a tripod.

5. The intro sequence cuts to Derren on the static camera; Derren sees this on the monitor and lowers his arms. Derren is now live.

6. Derren talks for a bit then walks over to the television. At this point, the left half of the prerecorded actionless segment is overlayed over the left half of the screen.

7. Derren turns on the television and watches the numbers being drawn and does his usual showmanship. When the numbers are drawn he then takes a moment start writing them down on a piece of card.

8. An assistant now places stickers of the numbers in order on the balls. You cannot see the assistant because of the overlay. The balls are tightly packed into the perspex tray to ensure there is no movement that will be spotted when the overlay is faded out.

Unfortunately, the tight packing and touching of the balls makes one of them (the 39 ball on the left) push up a bit so that it's no longer resting on the bottom of the tray.

9. The assistant leaves shot left and the overlay has a 1 second fadeout (around 5:06 on this video but the quality is very low to see the difference on the 39 ball).

10. The post process shaking is then stopped (5:09) and a cameraman takes control of the tripod. Derren begins walking over to the left, hesitating for a moment as he seems unsure if the timing is right (if the overlay is still there it'll obviously be disastrous when he disappears behind it). He then reveals the balls and is hailed as our new psychic overlord.

Michael Jackson debuts Moonwalk - 1983 Motown Show

Fred_Chopin says...

One more cue : You can even hear the music track fading out at the end.
Impressive dancer however. Shame that he had to lip-sync ; common practice or not, it sucks.

I'd rather listen to someone sing for real (with more conservatives movements) then watch someone dance on some studio track. Not much different then what Britney Spears and the rest are doing really...

I think I too will send a stripper to my high school reunion

JAPR says...

I don't honestly care enough to go to a high school reunion unless it's convenient. For me, there are the friends that I still keep in touch with, and the people that have faded out of my life. College reunions, on the other hand, will probably happen whenever I can make it.

Can HAARP strengthen and steer these storms??? A Possibility is jst that until t can be proved wrong, and unfortunately, we are not all adept at information gathering, nor are we given all the information from which to draw a reasonable conclusion.....It's called research...combined with critical thinking, anything is knowable....

Pink Floyd - Echoes synchronized with 2001: A Space Odyssey

MrFisk says...

As soon as the song "Echoes" is played and the "Jupiter And Beyond The Infinite" title card pops up, a ping will sound. This pinging sound will ring once every few seconds for the first 1:20 or so. The music will slowly start to fade in after ten seconds or so. It is very eerie-sounding - as synthesizers slowly build, and eventually a mellow, slow guitar riff comes into play.

As all this psychedellic, mellow music builds up the images on the screen are of the monolith floating around in space while the outstanding special effects show the planets in the background. The sense of limitless space is evident, and the music only enhances that feeling.

LYRICS/IMAGES/INTERPRETATIONS:

The lyrics begin at 2:57. Here is a line-by-line breakdown and my own personal interpretations.

LYRICS: "Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air" IMAGE: The camera pans across the vast space background. INTERPRETATION: Obviously the albatross represents the monolith - which is, as the song says, hanging motionless.

LYRICS: "And deep beneath the rolling waves/In labyrinths of coral caves/The echo of a distant time/Comes willowing across the sand" IMAGES: The monolith continues to float around in space as the camera pans towards the Discovery ship. INTERPRETATION: The references to the ocean might be a comparison of the vastness of the ocean and the even more vastness of space. "The echo of a distant time" might refer to the monolith - as we know the monoliths have been appearing to Earthlings since evolutionary times. "Willowing across the sand" seems to symbolize the tiny little spaceship slithering across the vastness of space like a worm through sand.

LYRICS: "And Everything is green and submarine" IMAGE: The Discovery. INTERPRETATION: "submarine" is obviously the spaceship Discovery - as a submarine explores the water, this machine explores space.

LYRICS: "And no one showed us to the land/And no on knows the where or whys" IMAGE: images of the monolith and Bowman's pod heading for it. INTERPRETATION: The lines might be something that the humans who discovered the monolith might say - "whoever put these monoliths here didn't tell us why, but we're figuring it out."

LYRICS: "But something stirs and something tries/And starts to climb towards the light" IMAGES: The monolith flying upward while the camera pans over to the Discovery. INTERPRETATION: Could mean two things simultaneously: 1) The monolith (not sure what it is, which is why it is referred to as "something") begins to gain momentum and moves from the bottom of the screen to top, and continues to move. The light it's moving to might be the light show that soon occurs. 2)Symbolic of how insignificant Bowman and his pod is (just "something"), and it is heading towards the monolith - as a subject might approach its savior and/or like a moth to a lightbulb.

LYRICS: "Strangers passing in the street/By chance two seperate glances meet/And I am you and what I see is me" IMAGE: Bowman's pod heading straight towards the camera. INTERPRETATION: The monolith and Bowman might be the two strangers who have just happened to run into each other. There's so many people in the world that the huge population and all the individual traits each person has might be compared with the vastness of space. "And I am you..." - I'm positive this is a reference to the later section of the film in which Bowman sees himself as an old man in the "hotel room," however, I believe that somehow this second verse was switched with the fifth verse. The "Through the window... a million bright ambassadors" lines would seem more appropriate at this time. Either way, this still is a thoughful, poetic line.

LYRICS: "And do I take you by the hand/And lead you through the land/And help me understand the best I can" IMAGE: The monolith disappears. INTERPRETATION: "Take you by the hand" - what the monolith might be saying to Bowman - to take him on a tour of the monolith's home land. "And help me understand...." what both the monolith and Bowman might say to each other - to learn more about each other. As Bowman was sent to study the monolith, the monolith is a tool to study Earth and its people.

LYRICS: "And no one calls us to move on/And no one forces down our eyes/And no one speaks and no one tries/And no one flies around the sun" IMAGE: The camera pans up and the light show begins just as the last word of the last line is sung. INTERPRETATION: "no one calls us to move on... forces down our eyes" - sounds like something two children might say who are so excitied about something and can't stop doing what they're doing (as Bowman and the monolith are about to embark on a fantastic journey). "no one tries.... no one flies around the sun" - open to interpretation, could mean just about anything.

Singing ends for the time being as the music becomes more mellow as the light show continues. The sound of the music seems to perfectly match the mood the lightshow induces - exactly like any other movie uses a pop song during any kind of montage.

At the 7 minute point the music changes and becomes driven by organs and drums, just as the light show becomes a series of starry images - the swirling galaxies, the images that look like embryos, the dancing diamonds. The music continues to match the images and mood on-screen until....

At the 10:30 point the music fades out and an extremely eerie, freaky sequence of sound effects is faded in. This transition occurrs as the transitition on the screen is made from the starry images to the ultraviolet images of the alien planet. The sound is no longer rock, but strictly psychedellic, much like the "eeeee"- choir-sung sound on the film's actual soundtrack. Some of the background sounds on the CD seem to synch with the images on screen such as wind, waves crashing, and seagulls as we are shown what looks like the alien planet's ocean.

The eerie sonic sequence lasts until 14:20 when Bowman finds himself in the bizarre "hotel room." The music starts to fade out as synthesizers slowly start to build in the background. It is at this time that Bowman begins to slowly walk around and try to figure out where he is. The sound and music continues to build and the eerie sequence fades out. The pinging noise also occurs. The music comes to a climax around 17:06 when Bowman sees himself in the other room as an old man eating.

At 18:00 Bowman gets out of the chair and looks around. At 18:14 the guitars kick back in as he turns around and returns to the table.

At 19:11 the lyrics come back.

LYRICS: "Cloudless everyday you fall upon my waking eyes/Inviting and inciting me to rise" IMAGE: Bowman walks from the door to the table. INTERPRETATION: This might be something Bowman, as an old man, might be thinking. Perhaps he has been stuck in that room for decades as the aliens' guinea pig?

LYRICS: "And through the window in the wall/Come streaming in on sunlight wings/A million bright ambassadors of morning" IMAGE: Bowman sits down at the table. INTERPRETATION: I believe all three lines refer to the rays of light which brough Bowman from our reality to the reality he is in now. It is possible this entire verse was switched with the second verse.

LYRICS: "And no one sings me lullabies/And no one makes me close my eyes/And so I throw the windows wide/And call to you across the sky" IMAGE: Bowman eats his meal. INTERPRETATION: "lullabies" and "close my eyes" might be something Bowman would say since it seems he has been alone for years in just a few seconds. The latter two lines might refer to the monolith - calling to it to do something.

Music continues much like it did during the light show sequence. At 21:18 the music quickly fades out just as the old, dying Bowman points to the monolith in front of him. The music at this point is keyboard-driven, very mellow - as if someone was trying to put somene to sleep (i.e. Bowman dying).

At 22:10 a strange sound, like a jet engine in the distant, starts to fade in, along with the pinging sound again. The image on screen is of the embryonic Bowman. Eventually the music fades out to just the eerie sound effects as the "Star Child" looks at the camera.

Both the song and the movie then end AT THE EXACT SAME TIME.

Atheists - An Increasingly Outspoken Minority

spoco2 says...

>> ^arsenault185:
I almost have to take offense to that one spoco. Your entitled to your opinion though, so I wont.
(playing devils advocate)
So I'm narrow minded for having faith in a higher power am I? I believe perfectly well that humans are capable of "functioning really well" without dropping everything off on a "phantom dude." For you to say this makes you just as narrow minded as what your trying to claim I am.

My issue was that he was saying that he couldn't fathom how anyone can function WITHOUT said mythical dude... not that people chose to, but rather that he almost took offense in the fact that people could dare to get by without him.

Of course I can handle my issues on my own. of course you could. So what if life is better for me because I believe in God and Jesus? Why does it bother you?

Ahh, because you have the arrogance to assume that your life is better than mine thanks to your belief. If it makes you happy, so be it, but to do a snide 'my life is better than yours because I believe in them'... that's condescending.

And how was that mainstream? It was a local station. And on top of that, how could that EVER be conceived as condescending? If anything, they were trying to show people that atheists are normal people and are capable for normal lives, and that you AREN'T heathens of some kind.

It's still a tv station, and it demonstrates the media attitude in general in the US... and not condescending? On second watching I think, perhaps they were trying to not be condescending... but it comes across that way in spades. All this incredulity that Atheists can amazingly be good people and lead moral lives, and that... oh my goodness, there's quite a lot of us. Then:

Firstly the Bishop is a major condescending dick suggesting that it's a better culture for people who are 'having struggles with faith', and those that ... pause, stammer 'don't believe in god' can be more 'forthright and honest' about the fact. He's trying to suggest that there are not more athiests, just that all them good christian types allow them to speak up. What crud, it's an even more religiously zealot filled media and parliament than ever. The second speaker on that point nails it.

The "the children have had no problem making friends at school". As if they're some sorts of freaks who should be finding it difficult.

Then 'yeah, good points from both sides'... um... what points exactly did the pro religious have in this piece? Um... none... that's right, just the bishop with the insanely ludicrous 'who do you put your faith in' comment. Just Argh... Argh...

Just the term 'Believers vs non Believers'... it is putting a positive spin on those that believe. Rationalists vs Religious is less divisive.

And 'It's mainstream now' as it fades out... as if it's some closet thing.

Chill out. Let people believe what they want to believe, and you believe what you want to believe.
(I am a Christian, though and extremely right wing conservative, but not in the fact that you should eat Christ Chex for breakfast)

I am more than happy for people to believe in whatever they wish EXCEPT when it causes detriment to the world at large:
* When lack of belief in scientific facts is harming education
* When people's narrow minded interpretation of their bible is trying to be forced into country's laws
* When people are being discriminated against because of who they want to share a bed with
* When those that believe in god are of the opinion that EVERYONE should believe in their god.

That's what has all us atheists all riled up, the people you have running for office in the states all proudly proclaim their faith, and it would seem would have NO ability to ever stand for office if they did not.

It's a horrendous state of affairs where the religion of the running member has any baring on their election chances.

Jimi Hendrix; Hey Joe Tienerklanken

wazant says...

@johnny:

This looks to be from BRT, which is Belgian national television; probably 1967 judging by the song and hair styles. And yes, an obvious lip sync--no cables on the guitars, no microphone for the singer (the biggest giveaway) AND a volume-slider fade out at the end! (Great the way you spotted the "ack!" too.)

These days, we have MTV--an entire channel dedicated to lip sync, but back then you could see it on all the channels from time to time. I'm always disappointed when I think I've found a rare, classic studio performance, only to find a bad lip sync instead. For example, I recently saw "The Kids Are Alright" (the Who) on DVD and was surprised how many of the clips were actually from lip synced TV shows like this one. Many musicians hate doing these things; I could easily imagine that Jimi was one of them.

If it were I, I may have faded out the actual speeches after the first bit... we get the point that you're singing his speeches, no need to continue making it sound like a mess for the whole 'song'...
