Shelley Lubben On Abuse In The Porn Industry - (Very NSFW)
Having worked in the adult industry as an editor, photographer and videographer for several years I can say that most porn shoots are not even remotely like what Ms. Lubben describes. BUT that is not to say, that as with all industries, there are small unprofessional companies that crop up that don’t follow industry guidelines and ethics.
The company I worked for did fetish porn, so slapping, choking and inflicting pain were all a part of the days work. The actors that perform in these videos are professionals who have very clear guidelines as to what they will and won’t do, those guidelines are in writing with the contract signed by them prior to shooting and are gone over again in a interview prior to shooting the scene which are recorded on camera. All professional production companies work with talent agencies who are familiar with what scenes their actors are willing to perform in and also have a clear list of their artists “hard no’s”. Again, unprofessional agents and companies will not follow these guidelines.
Porn is not mostly shot at private locations as Ms. Lubben asserts in the video, it’s shot either on sound stages or at locations that are rented from private owners and permitted with the city for shooting a film. Here again, unprofessional companies will slide past these regulations and shoot rogue.
Bodily fluids?! Yes, of course, it’s sex. All the fluids she spoke of are part of sexual contact and rightfully so are part of the shoots. Again a professional company is prepared to clean up and deal with this. If anal work is part of the shoot, actors are given guidelines, if they are not already familiar with them, on how to prepare themselves for this kind of a shoot, including dietary info and a bowel evacuation schedule prior to shooting.
Up to date health reports are verified prior to starting work, if you aren’t compliant, no shoot. PERIOD. People’s lives and welfare are at stake and it’s taken very seriously.
My personal take on the video shown here is that Ms. Lubben has a very personal agenda, her experience in the industry was not a good one and it seems to fall under working for unprofessional companies. The video “Porn Set” used to illustrate her points in her speech shows actors who obviously had major issues with the shoots they were working on and who should have left them immediately. Also from the video shown it looked like some of the actors were either high or drunk. The use of drugs and alcohol on set is a huge NO at any professional shoot; Ms. Lubben’s experience in the industry again seems to fall foul of that. I personally have turned away actors (in the kindest way possible) who were visibly intoxicated showing up for to work. It’s incredibly unsafe as with any work place to perform impaired.
How to solve these problems? Regulation is a good start, but also a sticky area (no pun intended) for gov’t to get involved in. Porn is a multi-billion dollar industry with little to no regulation. BUT as you begin to regulate, you legitimize the actions of porn, which in the simplest of terms is prostitution, and with that word politicians start to turn and run. Should gov’t be involved? I for one think in the long run it should be, to protect the workers health and safety and weed out the unprofessional elements of the porn industry, and who knows eventually professionalize the sex industry all together.
VideoSift 5.0 bugs go here. (Sift Talk Post)
For the moment, the rich text comment editor has been disabled, but it's possible that we'll work on installing something like that again before too long.
Don't know if this thread is still getting any action but I have a question/bug. Maybe you designed it this way, but I used to use hot-keys such as CTRL+i for italics and CTRL+b for bold. That no worky anymore. Is this on purpose?
What The Media Isn't Telling You About The Drug War
If only that were true. I could forgive them for ignorance however it's not. The media at least the ones with half a brain cell and an once of perception all know what's going on. Like this guy he gained his knowledge by being one of them till he finally got so sick of the corruption, hypocrisy, and propaganda he had to speak up. I used to work for a newspaper so I understand where he is coming from. Media and News are a business they aren't acting to inform the public of critical information. That's how they present themselves that's what they want you to believe but that's the furthest thing from the truth. When I worked as an editor I began to see what it was about, they care only about money stories are arranged in a way to draw attention to the advertising space on each page. Advertising ALWAYS gets priority on the page. My job was to read a story and figure out what I could cut out of each story to make it fit in the spaces left after the ads were put in. If I had to cut out important info that was fine as long as it fit. Money is the media's only purpose. They could honestly care less about bringing real news to the people they really just want to grab your attention long enough for you see a commercial or glance at an Ad. The real news is out there but you have to look for it yourself don't depend on the Media to tell you what's going on in the world because all they really care about is money and power.
they dont tell "us" anything, since they dont know themselves! do i win

Your newspaper letter to the editor is both hilarious and painful.
"The Ancestor" by Darlingside
Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)
This is an email submission request by the creator - very cool video. More details:
The Ancestor is a collaboration between Chinese Takeout and Crazy Lake Pictures, both young production companies forged in the fires of speed-filmmaking challenges. Chinese Takeout members Timothy Hahn – Pixar employee by day, ruthless preditor (producer/editor) by night – and Abraham Dieckman, writer-director of the upcoming sci-fi feature Trash and Progress – recently made a splash on the festival circuit with the animated short film Cadaver, featuring the voices of Christopher Lloyd, Kathy Bates, and Tavi Gevinson. Crazy Lake Pictures accomplices Mike Lavoie, co-executive producer of the acclaimed film Sleepwalk with Me, and Keith Boynton, whose feature film Chasing Home was chosen as the opening-night premiere of the 2012 Gotham Screen International Film Festival, also collaborated on the well-received "Here We Go" music video for Brooklyn-based band The Spring Standards.
The Ancestor is Crazy Lake's second video for Darlingside (after the jaunty parable "Terrible Things"), and the first meeting of the minds between Crazy Lake and Chinese Takeout, though Hahn and Boynton have enjoyed the texture of each other's brains since their days doing improv comedy together at Amherst College. All four men are sensitive film nerds who look forward to many future collaborations.

I'm starting to be convinced that the new image stabilization feature in cameras was pioneered by a heavy LSD user.
I would guess the image stabilization here is done in the YouTube Video Editor. I wish more people would use image stabilization, even though the image gets really trippy at the higher settings.
Tea Party is the American Taliban
>> ^MarineGunrock:
Yet.
And I mean that. >> ^bcglorf:
This can't be overstated. Abhorrent as the Tea Party may be, they aren't actively executing their political opposition and they aren't trying to institute death by stoning for women convicted of adultery(eg. being rape victims).

"EDITOR’S NOTE: While they have way too much in common, the actual Taliban uses political violence to achieve its ends and the Tea Party doesn’t — and that’s an important distinction." --moveon.org
I do agree with this sentiment as the Taliban does it's "thing" differently, it should be made known though that tonight (and other talks too) at the RNC convention there was a large outcry for: making sure we have the best military ever and forever, ever; and, Iran and Syria, we may attack you at random if we have Republicans in office, so just keep yourselves on your toes. Oh and if you didn't know, we didn't need to really talk to anyone in the world about anything because, America is NUMBER FUCKING ONE AND YOU BETTER FUCKING KNOW YOUR PLACE!!!
Atleast, that is how it came across to me as a whole... So, as we have a VERY powerful military I'd say that we are a very active terrorizer of other countries (NOT just Syria and Iran; Mitt decided that Cold War part two was an excellent idea/threat to make). They may not be the Taliban, but they have a Pandora's Box that I imagine if opened and used, kills FAR more than the Taliban could ever hope to accomplish, both good and bad guys...
But, basically that was the entire gist of the "foreign policy" talked about. I'm sure the world is enamored with us right now, we can just ask people on here: If you thought the RNC speech's were extremely pro-American "Empire'ish" making many of the talks rude, condescending, and downright scary... Please vote me up. Otherwise, go for the opposite (remember this should be for the foreign crowd, if your the U.S. just reply or you can vote down, and then I'll just assume your a Teabagger).
@MarineGunrock not really going against anything you said (what you said was right anyhow and feeds into what I'm saying), I just wanted to grab all the quotes you had.

The Lion and the Croc
Or, the croc got so bored he fell asleep. >> ^boblobblaw:
I highly doubt it was drowning either. I think a more plausible explanation would be that the jaguar pierced the top of the croc's skull with its teeth.
>> ^iaui:
I'm not sure that crocodile was drowning ... some crocodiles can stay under water for upwards of two hours, some even longer. Perhaps if it was caught off guard before it could breathe in and prepare for a dive it might drown? Or perhaps the jaguar footage was really over a couple of hours long and it just stood there holding the crocodile underwater that whole time and the editor just didn't want to make us watch that length of film... (:

But they sure made a point of ensuring that everyone knew they were gathering up their guns now, didn't they? Or are we forgetting all those weapons turning up at political rallies a few years ago?
I'd say that was pretty clearly intended as intimidation through threats of violence. Different, maybe in scale...but still terrorist actions.
