Why People Doubt Climate Science, And Why Facts Don't Matter

bareboards2 says...

The thing that leapt out at me in this vid?

The factoid that we have a finite ability to worry about things.

And since conservatives are worried about gay sex and g-d damn those welfare cheats and ebola and ISIS -- there isn't any room left to worry about this. The real threat to their existence.

TYT Republicans destroy and have no solutions

It's funny, I said almost the exact same thing to my right wing cousin before the election. He believes Obama created Ebola in order to put us under martial law...because he hates America. (Sweet Zombie Jebus!)

EDIT: I must also say, the dumbocrats totally gave this election away by making their campaigns the same as retardican campaigns, namely "Obama sucks and we don't like him". WHAT IDIOTS! I can't fathom how they thought that strategy might work...'vote for us because our leader, plans, and past progress are all crap'?!?
My real hope is that the next 2 years might wake people up to the fact that they don't HAVE to vote for retardicans OR dumbocrats....but it's quite a thin slice of hope with little evidence to back it up. I actually HOPE they try to force their 'agenda' (of no helpful governing except for corporations and opposing and repealing any past legislation passed with democratic votes, even their own). After the last election, however, I have little evidence that Americans CAN think for themselves, or think at all on average, so we're stuck with the teams already chosen. Might be time to move to Canada! ;-)

On the lighter side though, Nothing has really changed though, Obama can still veto anything the R puts out and they don't have enough control of congress to override the veto. If anything If Reps really are emboldened and think they have a mandate to go full retard..even moreso than usual. Then in the long term, this will benefit the liberals when the public ultimately rejects GOP ideas as they have increasingly done so.

Out of control orbits.

For me, it's about negative 15 years....and I thought I was being generous giving deniers more than long enough to actually READ the science themselves and see it's simple and clear. I have thought they deserved ridicule for over 20 years, but I held off, knowing some are just slow learners. Now I see that far too many are simply not learners at all, and deserve ridicule when they spout ridiculousness. I often oblige.

...and you left out 9/11 hoaxers/inside jobers and the newest....Ebola is an intentional Obama plot to announce martial law and take your guns an liberty. (Yes, a relative actually said that to me 2 weeks ago, and was 100% serious about it.)

Here's a serious question for you all, although not precisely related to this video.

How long do we have to wait before the proper response to climate-change deniers is ridicule? There hasn't been any actual scientific controversy for over a decade...how many decades do we have to pander to them before we can treat them exactly the same as flat-earthers and moon-landing-hoaxers?

Ebola Nurse Speaks out to the public

blackoreb says...

From what I've read, the video was recorded by Dr. Gary Weinstein. He was one of Nina Pham's treating physicians and worked with all three of the Ebola patients at Texas Health Presbyterian. He is not an 'administrator' at the hospital. According to the YouTube description for the video Ms. Pham asked Dr. Weinstein to share the video with the public.

Now that you mention it, it would make sense you're totally right. It doesn't at all seem natural or necessary to speak the way he did, mentioning that she "volunteered" as opposed to just generally saying she helped.

Bill Nye: You Can’t Ignore Facts Forever

What You Need to Know About Ebola

CaptainObvious says...

Ebola is very destructive to health care systems. It is silly to compare it to other viruses that do not create the panic, fear and lethality of Ebola. Ebola has the potential to get out of control because it takes a very serious toll on health care systems. Once panic is in place, it becomes very difficult to screen patients and process intake. Once a region has just a handful of cases, everyone with a simple fevers thinks they have Ebola and overwhelm the intake system - and ironically, the best place to get Ebola will probably be the waiting room. This virus can very quickly sap the resources of hospital staff, and once a few staff and patients in the waiting room get infected, panic just gets worse. Ebola is very unforgiving to mistakes by health care providers.

The media is quick to make out everyone in Africa as naive and child like. This is a mistake. Many in Africa know all about viruses and how they spread. They suffer greatly by a an absolutely dismal and bankrupt health care system, but I think it would be naive to think of our system as so superior that we would not have the same panic.

Ebola is very serious. It needs to be taken seriously. Anyone that belittles the problem is making the situation much worse.

Just as an FYI, health care workers who are exposed to HIV-infected blood at work have a 0.3% risk of becoming infected. In other words, 3 of every 1,000 such injuries, if untreated, will result in infection. : Source CDC.

Yeah, try that with Ebola.

Well, how can I possibly counter that.
Your self asserted grasp on eating disorders far outstrips mine.
Also, Your comparison to Ebola is a ridiculous straw man that any reasonable person should be able to differentiate.
Normalization related to weightgain is the effect of a society getting ever fatter and people becoming less and less concerned with it, or less likely to avoid emulating it because it has every day prevalence and gains acceptance.
For your consideration here is Normalization

Your argument about a given method or therapy (I am not saying this guys letter was either) having a necessary outcome of positive would discredit EVERY attempt at getting someone to lose weight, as no method has 100% success or is necessarily "good/positive".

The act of pointing out that someone is heavy isn't nice. But, denying that vanity can cause people to want to change is just silly.

You trying to claim that my argument is that this is my preferred method is also silly and another straw man.

The implications/effect of this guys letter, as I am sure he is experiencing is by no means known, or reliable from individual to individual.

Every line of your post is more concerned with using falsified assertions of my position to try and better your argument all while failing to include references or anything substantive to debunk my actual arguments. It is not working.

>> ^NinjaInHeat:

I don't know what to say except again that it's pretty obvious you don't know the first thing about eating disorders.
How exactly does the American obesity problem equals the "normalization" of it? That's like saying the normalization of Ebola is a problem in Africa.
I'll give you this much, your idea of dealing with a problem is definitely an effective one.
Making a person super self-conscious about their physical appearance is a very effective way of having them change it. The problem here is that you to understand that effective doesn't necessarily equal good/positive.
Your idea of the proper way to deal with these issues is a scary one, more so for the fact you don't even realize what the implications of it are.

Take a second to think about how TV "role models" usually look (or people "in the public eye" as scannex puts it).
What planet have you been living on where the "normalization of obesity" has become a problem?

>> ^scannex:
The normalization of obesity is a problem.

Oh, I don't know... how about this planet? Where the USA is the fattest developed country in the world?
Your text to link...
So yes... "F cking seriously".
You must be daft if you cannot discern between healthy weight, a supermodel and someone who is obese. Being underweight is dangerous as well, and you drawing the conclusion as to that is what we are after is silly.
This was a private letter SHE made public. You say that the opinion is that she is too fat to be on TV. Not the case, and not the suggestion of the letter. This PRIVATE letter was a plea to this woman's sensibilities in fashion less sugarcoated than she is used to.

Reporter Gets Unexepected Kiss at Olympics

I've had someone try to do that to me. Had a similar reaction too, only I also shoved her away.
There's a second or two of "WTF? WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" that kicks in. Then afterwards you feel like such a shmuck, but in those first couple seconds, you really don't know if they are gonna, like, knife you or they have kooties or Ebola or something.
It also doesn't help if you're like me and that sort of nice, cute stuff never happens to you.

Also, if the sexes were reversed, the guy would likely be in prison by now.

Uh, no. If a guy playfully tried to kiss a reporter on-air, he wouldn't be very popular but it's very unlikely that the police would be involved. Double standards, yes, but not that extreme.
