WTF is Duke Nukem Forever? -- A Narrated Demo Review.

All good and apt points, however the blame lays upon 3d Realms, not Gearbox. Broussard was a man who simply had no design sense and just wanted to do what he last saw in a game rather than just finishing the fucking game. He admitted they implemented the 2 weapon limit bullshit.
God i hope they release the editor so the community can "fix" the game.

Hehe, opensource it.

I think you're missing the point, that's partially what it's trying to be, a really refined, arcade shooter with over the top enemies and by the looks of it some driving sequences thrown in for good measure (see other videos).

Everything about it looks polished, the design is consistent and detailed, and the animations are incredibly fluid. Hopefully they'll tack on a decent story to go along with it, but I'm neither holding my breath nor going to be particularly disappointed if they don't.

Not quite understanding how you can call it dull and tedious. If anything it's being held back by the fact it's obviously being played with a gamepad. Neither do I think this will require a particularly powerful PC to play. For one, this is the company that made the Quake 3 engine which was widely used by other developers in its prime, for another, check out the engine adaptation of this to the iPhone, if anything it looks highly optimised. >> ^netean:

This game feels like it's been in development nearly as long as Duke Nukem Forever - I remember seeing early footage just after Quake 4 launched.
Tragic to think that after all this time, all this development and money, they've made a very visually stunning game that looks quite dull and tedious. To my eye looks exactly the same as Quake 4/3/2/1 Doom etc just with better graphics.
So essentially this is Quake 1 but you'll still need to invest an a top of the line new gaming rig just to get more than 15fps.
ID Games: a 1 trick pony that seem to think if they up the graphics enough time no one will notice the total lack of originality!

ID Tech 5 is portable across all major platforms. A high end gaming rig is most certainly not required. It's designed to make cross-platform releases have as much parity as possible. The fact that is made to run at solid 60 FPS on a PS3 and an Iphone as well as PC and 360 is probably one of the reasons it took so long to develop. I'm sure you will be able to crank up the bells and whistles on a high end PC but that was not the intention of this game or the engine.
Another reason for delay would be that Id is actually creating a new graphics technology too. Not just cranking out a game based on someone else's engine. Id Tech 5 streams MASSIVE amounts of textures on the fly into and out of memory seamlessly. Game devs never have to worry about texture memory constraints or making each platform look good. The engine optimizes everything per platform so each looks as good as possible while the developer only need make one version of the texture for all platforms.
Another reason for a long delay would be that Id licenses it's engines to a bevy of other game companies who could not pursue or afford the R&D of developing new tech. Part of selling such a high cost package is they need to provide usable tools for artists and programmers to interface with. This is a priority for their profitability down the line because if the tools suck there will be heavy tech support costs to fix them and maybe a lawsuit. "Rage" is just half of the equation here.
Finally, I believe the delay in this game could be attributed to it being a semi-open world exploration game, with a story line, and with a sizable racing component thrown in as well. It is not just a first person shooter as you see in this clip. In fact the multiplayer part of the game is said to be just the combat-racing. Not deathmatch or CTF. It's a pretty big departure from the "one trick pony" you describe.
Personally, I would like game devs to release a game when it's fully completed and not draw unfair comparisons to 3D Realms' laughable situation. There really is no similarity at all if you know the facts.

Looks kinda lame and unpolished. Typical Unreal Engine ugliness abound. Why won't that stinking pile just go the fuck away and stop snaking its way into games I might otherwise want to play?

Oh please. DNF may use Unreal, but the renderer is a custom rewrite. You would never have noticed "Unreal ugliness" if you didn't know it was Unreal. Are you honestly saying Mortal Kombat 2011 looks ugly? Batman Arkham Asylum looks ugly? Are you saying this looks ugly:

Unreal only looks as bad as what the artists are capable of, and the newer versions of the engine are looking... unreal.

Actually, I'm not sure you know what I mean. The way the game looks is what prompted me to check if my assumptions were correct. I didn't know it used UE until I looked it up prior to that post, and the way everything is shiny, like it has plastic wrap on it is one such aspect to which I refer.

I don't like the engine because it tends (in my experience) to not be very robust and has several issues which always seem to nag at me no matter what game it is that uses it. Epic endorses NVIDIA, because they give Epic lots of money to do so, likely. As a result, they aren't as friendly to ATI (AMD) cards. It's possiboe it was the cards I was using, but other games never exhibited the same behaviors on ATI and not NVIDIA as UE games did. One such issue would be vsync seeming to behave incorrectly on ATI.

Oh, and don't even get me started on anti-aliasing... what the fuck modern game these days doesn't support AA? Oh, right. UE games. And if you manage to get it working by forcing it in your drivers, (doesn't always work, especially on ATI), then you get a much higher framerate hit than you should. Other engines handle it just fine, but for some reason, UE has a very hard time with AA, even on extremely powerful cards. Shitty engine.

Actually I got demo access because I own another of Gearbox's games, Borderlands. They gave Steam owners of Borderlands first access too.>> ^entr0py:

Well the demo is now out. I have to say, having played through it, it felt very dated... and some of the art in there was clearly very old. It just wasn't what you'd come to expect of a game released today.

You mean the demo exclusively for people who've committed to buying the game? I guess they don't want anyone who is still skeptical actually playing it. That doesn't seem like a good sign.

This game is going to be a let down, just because of the build up and anticipation. I'm not saying it won't be fun...I'm just saying it's not worth the 15 years I've waited

Sorry Rottenseed but you're going to have to let those 15 years go. Nothing can live up to a 15 year hype, unless it propels you Tron-like into the game. I too have been chomping at the bit since DN3D for a decent sequal. At this point I'll take what I can get and from what I've seen this will be a fun, if not worthy, followup.

But if Thief 4 is a bomb, then dammit I'll be taking hostages.

Top Upcoming 2011 PC/Console Games!

Yeah right... Top 5 most anticipated games of 2011 if you only care about RPG's.
There's such a lack of obvious games it's mind boggling. Where's Portal 2 (i know it already came out, but it came out in 2011), where's LA NOIRE, where's Skyrim, where's Rage, where's Mass Effect 3, where's Duke Nukem Forever (i know... but it still counts), etc...

1. Upcoming games, so no Portal 2.
2. Mass Effect 3 is slated for 2012.
3. Rage and Duke Nukem Forever don't look all that fun to me, but I hope they prove me wrong. Also, Duke Nukem Forever could potentially slip into 2021.
4. Skyrim and L.A. Noire... I totally agree with you on.
5. I have very low expectations for Star Wars: The Old Republic. I wanted it to kick ass, but everything I've seen tells me it ain't gonna happen.
6. Dragonball Z Online??? How the fuck did that get on here?
7. Torchlight was fine, but how anyone could consider a sequel among the top 5 on this list is beyond me.
8. Any finally... NO FUCKING DEUS EX: HUMAN REVOLUTION?!? Madness!

[EDIT] Ohhhh this isn't put out by Game Trailers, it's some doofus' personal list. Fuck that. Here's mine.

1. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
2. L.A. Noire
3. Guild Wars 2
4. Skyrim (reluctantly... looks awesome but the Elder Scrolls series has been a gigantic disappointment for me up to this point, aside from being beautiful environment simulators)
5. This one is tough... but I'm going to give it to Heroes of Might & Magic VI
