Star Wars Holiday Special... That everyone REALLY wanted

I just bought a HTC Legend - any tips? (Geek Talk Post)

rottenseed says...

First off DO NOT RUN A TASK KILLER! Droid is meant to run with things in the background. Your only worries should be bad programming from 3rd party software that might actively run cpu in the background. Most of what is running in the background, you want running for quick access. It's kind of counter intuitive to what we know of computers. Here's some info here.

Clever Microsoft ad

mgittle says...

You guys are missing the point. People don't buy things because of what they are, they buy them because of WHY (or why they think) the company made them. People buy Apple products because they know Apple strives to make their products easy to use, innovative, and stylish. That's why people buy an ipod and not a friggin creative zen.

Microsoft's ad is good because it's telling people WHY their design is different. They don't have to convince everyone, and plenty of people won't be persuaded by their ad/design. But, you can be sure there are PLENTY of people out there who don't like their iphone/droid/whatever and are open to checking out something new.

Stephen Colbert speaks to the House Immigration Comittee

Tojja says...

Bravo. Exquisitely balanced use of deadpan irony, satire and sarcasm to make these points in a much more thought provoking way than would otherwise have been possible. People seem to have completely missed this.

Satire is never quite as funny when it has to be explained, but what he did through this dialog was bring out in the open numerous ingrained (and many would agree, wrong) views on the subject of migrant labor (esp on farms). Food for thought, pardon the pun.

Also WTF is up with the lady checking her Blackberry when someone is speaking? I find it staggering that members of this House Judiciary sub-committee haven't been issued Droid Incredibles.

Forget all that brouhaha. DropBox is the perfect solution and it works on all platforms (even Droid and iPhone).

It just installs a folder on your computer that is synchronized every other place you have your DropBox account setup. For example, you have a folder like "dropbox/our_files/" filled with a bunch of files you need to share. Your compatriots across the globe install DropBox and they have the same "our_files" directory on their computers. Any time you or any of them add a file to the folder, it automagically appears in the same folder on everyone else's computer. Likewise, any time you delete a file, it disappears from everyone else's computer.

It's a pretty great service and starts with 2GB free (you can upgrade to 50GB for $10/mo). Either all of the other users can install DropBox and login with your credentials -or- you can create your shared folder and just share it with select individuals (and it will be sync'd in their own DropBox folders).

I feel ya, my wife and strangely all of my girlfriends of the past were Mac people and it's been the source of some bitter arguments. I recently built a new pc at the beginning of this summer for roughly $1000 and it SCREAMS compared to what you can get out of a Mac for that price point.

My system:

--Gigabyte 890FX (overclocks very well) $179.99
--AMD 1090T 3.2ghz 6 cores w/ Turbo clocks to 3.6 $290 on newegg but i got a deal at the time for $100 off combo
I've got it running @ 3.6 stable on air and 4ghz when other cores are inactive and turbo kicks in
Newegg has it listed
--4 gigs of kingston 1600 DDR3 ~$100~
--ATI Radeon 5850 w/ 1 gig of memory $290
--New powersupply ~$100-$120
and $50 for a new 250gig WD hard drive

And although those are estimates w/ the $100 off the chip @ the time it did come out to about $1000 w/ the tax and all. I recycled the case and the optical drive I had and used stock cooling that came with the chip. I dont have any performance numbers available right now but if you know a thing or two about hardware you know they have all kinds of tricks to help you part with your cash for less.

To be fair, I'll throw in the cost of my monitor which was ~200 my operating system is Windows 7 ultimate which I got from college for $15 and my keyboard and mouse ~50 total
so that's my ~$1300 system

http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/imac?mco=MTAyNTQzNjA
the cheapest comparable mac here is using an i3 Intel processor (see chart for performance) http://www.guru3d.com/article/core-i3-530-processor-review/12

the video card on the system
http://www.guru3d.com/article/ati-radeon-hd-4670-review/9 compare those scores to the card i got
http://www.anandtech.com/show/2848/4
look @ the crysis scores and bear in mind that the second reviewer was using FSAA and AF at very high

you get the idea

I've given up on the iPhone, but thanks for the tip about frash. I really wanted to install Flash apps, but they've said no to that, so I'm saying no to them. When my Macs expire, I may just give up on them altogether. I hear Windows 7 is good, and for the money I paid for my Mac Pro I could have a super sweet PC.

I'm all Droid from this point on.

Fyi, you can install flash on a jailbroken phone with frash .

I've used it a little and while not nearly as functional as I want it to be in certain situations, it still works.

Also, if you have any jailbreak questions or advice toss em my way, I nerd out when I start fiddling with the file system on my iphone.

What part of "magic and revolutionary" don't you understand Blankfist?

Steve Jobs is by all accounts a real asshole. I still like the products. Not because it's cool, trendy or makes me feel superior. I like it because it works best for me. I agree with @kronosposeidon that HTML5 and other open technologies will eventually supplant the stopgap that is Flash.

Google is pushing it themselves with their recent in browser game project for Chrome. They give faint praise to Adobe and talk about Flash collaboration, but I don't think there is love in the heart of the Google hacker for proprietary Flash. I do realize that the compiled .SWF format is kind of open- but the .FLA most definitely is not - am I right? I know there are some 3rd party tools that can compile SWF like Swift3D, but Adobe has a stranglehold on a "complete" authoring tool for Flash- and intends to keep it. Open indeed.

And just because I'm feeling cantankerous - I'll let Trip Hawkins put some icing on this cake - in a post aimed at professional developers who would actually like to make some money off their creations.

@kronosposeidon I only think HTML5 can end flash for video. HTML5, as far as I know, is not nearly as robust for games and more complex things as flash is now.

@KnivesOut and @blankfist iPhone programming can be done in C++ with some small objective-c wrappers - which makes it WAY easier.

That said, cutting of compiling from flash to iphone is a complete dick move by Apple, not at all unexpected. I suspect, I'll avoid the iphone4 I was considering getting and get some droid instead.

I just built my first Droid app. Easy as pie, too. It's a shitty one screen app with the words 'Fuck Apple' I through together, but it works! It took me two days to figure out how to jailbreak the iPhone and then how to copy 3rd party apps to it. The Droid? It took me a couple hours at most to get all the SDKs working.

Viva Droid!
